'Hamilton' Story and Characters | The BSB Podcast

History class rarely includes rap battles, dramatic dance numbers, or a crowd singing about tax policy, but Hamilton somehow makes all three wildly entertaining. Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical takes the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton and turns it into a fast-paced Broadway phenomenon packed with hip-hop, humor, heartbreak, and enough lyrical speed to make subtitles feel necessary. What sounds like the world’s riskiest history project quickly becomes impossible to stop watching. For over a decade, Hamilton has continued to enchant audiences at the Richard Rodger Theatre, or if you're lucky, in a city near you, as this unstoppable show continues its tour de force. This musical, which blends contemporary music with a colonial feel, has recently arrived at The Fisher Theatre, and Detroit showed up and showed out! In this episode of the BSB Podcast, hosts Brian Kitson and RJ Miller-Zelinko break down the story and characters of the North American touring production of Hamilton! With both of us having seen the show before to varying degrees, how did this production hold up to previous ones? Find out in this episode! As someone who began an outlet with my best friend because of our shared love of Broadway and Theatre, I understand the strength of the bonds we form over the course of our lives. Whether it be with family who prove that blood is thicker than water, or the chosen family we gather, there are some relationships that can't be broken, even when life tries to do so. It's a friendship like that that is put to the test in Rajiv Joseph's King James, currently running at the Detroit Public Theatre! We had the pleasure of chatting with the cast of this production, Mateo Davis and Alexander Pobutsky, about what it's like stepping into the roles of Shawn and Matt, respectively! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Davis and Pobutsky discuss what drew them to this particular project and the challenges of bringing their characters to life. Exclusive Interview: Russell Boyle, Rachel Gottlieb Kalmowitz, & Justin Heald of Birmingham Village Players' 'A Little Night Music'

A Little Night Music is basically what happens when wealthy, overly dramatic people spend a weekend making terrible romantic decisions in the Swedish countryside, but with incredible music and fancy clothes. This musical by Stephen Sondheim follows actresses, lawyers, husbands, wives, and lovers as they flirt, argue, scheme, and accidentally reveal far too much about themselves. Nearly everyone is in love with the wrong person, which creates the kind of emotional chaos that is both painful and hilarious to watch. Birmingham Village Players is closing out their season with a strong sense of whimsy, and we had the pleasure of talking with three cast members from this production, Russell Boyle, Rachel Gottlieb Kalmowitz, and Justin Heald! In this exclusive BSB Insider, these three actors talk about what drew them to wanting to be in A Little Night Music, and what it’s like to be in a Birmingham Village Players production! With this being a bucket list musical for Boyle, what is it about this show that is so attractive to him? How has Kalmowitz’s time as a cantor influenced her work on this production? As a member of the Quintet, how is Heald’s role the backbone of A Little Night Music? Check out this interview to find out! 'Hadestown' Music and Stagecraft | The BSB Podcast

In Hadestown, the band doesn’t sit beside the story; it is the story. Anaïs Mitchell (much like the fates with their tapestry) threads together folk, jazz, blues, and gospel until the music feels less like accompaniment and more like fate itself: seductive, restless, impossible to outrun. Every trombone growl and train-beat rhythm pulls Orpheus and Eurydice deeper underground, proving that in this retelling of a Greek myth, the songs carry as much power as the gods. Hadestown's music is so integral to the show that it deserves its own conversation! In this episode of the BSB Podcast, Hosts Brian Kitson and RJ Miller-Zelinko, along with special guest Ryann Ferguson, discuss the music and stagecraft of this incredible touring production. With a distinct sound that blends the smoothness of jazz with a feel ripped right from New Orleans, how do the songs of Hadestown serve the overall story?  Does that blend of soul match the story being told on stage at The Fisher Theatre? As is expected with most touring productions, the staging features some significant changes from its Broadway counterpart, so how exactly does this show translate to life on the road? And what are our final verdicts of this show? Listen to this exciting episode to find all that out and more! 'Hadestown' Story and Characters | The BSB Podcast

If someone told you that a tragic Greek myth could feel like a smoky jazz concert, a labor protest, and a love story all at once, you might have been skeptical; however, the long-running Broadway musical Hadestown combines all that and more. This genre-defying musical takes the ancient tale of Orpheus and Eurydice and drops it into a gritty, industrial world where gods act like corporate bosses and hope is as scarce as sunlight. From the mind of Anaïs Mitchell, Hadestown doesn’t just retell a story you may have heard before; it reshapes it into something urgent, emotional, and surprisingly relevant. It's poetic in its delivery, with music that speaks to the soul and a story where love battles fear, and trust is constantly put to the test. In this episode of the BSB Podcast, Hosts Brian Kitson and RJ Miller-Zelinko welcome guest Ryann Ferguson to break down the story and characters from the North American touring production of Hadestown! While this is a well-known Greek myth, how does Hadestown truly capture that story on stage? With a jazz-influenced world, how does this production combine these two different ideas? With characters based on Greek Gods, are some more relatable than others? With so many stories and characters to chat about, you'll have to listen to see where Hadestown ranks amongst so many other Broadway shows! Million Dollar Quartet is what happens when four rock ’n’ roll legends accidentally turn a casual studio hangout into an iconic piece of music history. In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Kasie Buono Roberts and Nathan Roberts discuss what it's like coming back to Million Dollar Quartet, having done this production many times before. Exclusive Interview: Emily Harbert of Pontiac Theatre IV's 'The Girl on the Train'

Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train, was one of those novels that strapped readers in and refused to let them go until the final pages. 'The Great Gatsby' Music and Stagecraft | The BSB Podcast

The roaring 20's have never felt so alive as they are in Broadway's The Great Gatsby! This new(ish) musical has brought F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel to the stage in a visually stunning tale of Jay Gatsby and his mission to win Daisy's heart. While everything may look dazzling on the surface, there's something darker brewing between the class system, and danger happens to be around every corner for these characters.      Stepping into the world of The Great Gatsby is entering a dream of lavish parties that never seem to end, at least that's how it seems on the surface. However, as you look a little deeper, it's a story of two worlds colliding: those born into money (old money) and those who made a name for themselves (new money). At the center is the mysterious figure of Jay Gatsby, the illusion of the American Dream, and the complex relationships that drive this timeless novel. Why does Gatsby’s story still resonate today? And what does it reveal about ambition, love, and identity? Well, that just so happens to be what we're going to explore in this first episode of The Great Gatsby discussion. In this episode of the BSB Podcast, Hosts Brian Kitson and RJ Miller-Zelinko share their past experiences with the F. Exclusive Interview: Abigail Aziz of 'Suffs'

Having been to New York City quite a few times over the course of the past few years, we've seen quite a few Broadway shows, but there's a special place in our hearts for Suffs the Musical. The story spoke deeply to us, as the musical follows the life of Alice Paul and the other suffragists who fought for women's right to vote at a time when that was seen as radical. While it captures a moment in time, it's also a story that reflects the world we live in and the need to continue marching on until everyone has equal rights. Suffs is powerful, and so are the individuals in the show, such as the insanely talented Abigail Aziz, whom we spoke to recently about this production! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Abigail Aziz, a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, discusses what it's like to join a show like Suffs. She explores the emotional weight of telling the stories of real women and their experiences, and how she finds balance in her real life to help carry that weight. As an off-stage principal cover, Aziz has many tracks to learn, and in this interview, she talks about her process for learning them and which role is her favorite! Exclusive Interview: Cassandra Svacha and Joseph Pacitto of Detroit Mercy Theatre Company's 'I'm Going To Marry You, Tobey Maguire'

We've all had a celebrity crush before that defined our adolescence. For me, it was Zac Efron in his High School Musical era. I was a young boy who thought he was fooling everyone into thinking he was straight, and yet as I sat on my couch watching HSM for the first time, I was smitten. So in a way, we're all a little like Shelby in I'm Going to Marry You, Tobey Maguire, however, perhaps not to the extremes she goes to. That being said, this play, currently running at the Detroit Mercy Theatre Company, takes a universal feeling and amplifies it with complete hilarity and absurdity in the best way. We recently spoke with the director of this production, Cassandra Svacha, and one of the cast members, Joseph Pacitto, about what audiences can expect from this production! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Svacha and Pacitto discuss what makes I'm Going to Marry You, Tobey Maguire a one-of-a-kind experience! Both talk about discovering, or in some cases rediscovering, an era that was defined by some questionable fashion and iconic music. Exclusive Interview: Patrick Blashill of 'The Music Man'

What do you get when you mix a small town from middle America with a charming con man? The Music Man, of course! Set in River City, Iowa, this classic Broadway musical follows Harold Hill, a smooth-talking fraud who convinces an entire town that their children urgently need a boys’ band, even though they really don't. His plan is simple: collect the money, skip town, and avoid questions like “what’s a trombone?” Packed with catchy songs, big dance numbers, and more enthusiasm than actual musical skill, The Music Man is a feel-good story about redemption, community spirit, and the fine art of talking your way out of trouble, until you don’t want to anymore. The national tour of this production is arriving at The Fox Theatre here in Detroit, and ahead of its arrival, we spoke with one of the cast members, Patrick Blashill! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Blashill discusses what it's like to step into a show such as this classic and how this production has pushed him as an actor! While Mayor Shin, who Blashill is playing in this production, tends to be a rather silly character, Blashill says he's bringing out a different side of the character's comedy through a more straight take! From favorite songs to some personal connections to Detroit, this actor has much to say in this exciting interview! Exclusive Interview: Carlos Elias, Ishani Patil, and Gugan Karthigeyan of International Academy East's 'Radium Girls'

Who are the Radium Girls? That's an excellent question, and perhaps one we should all be asking ourselves, as the story of these women is not only powerful but essential to know, as it has shaped how some of our world's industries are run. During the early 1900's, women working in factories came into contact with radium by licking the tips of their paintbrushes, as instructed by their bosses. What resulted was a plethora of health issues, including death, and mounting court cases as these women fought for protections and rights for all those in similar situations. International Academy East High School understands the importance of this incredible story of human perseverance, which is why they're bringing Radium Girls to their stage! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, we spoke with the student director of the show, Carlos Elias, and two cast members, Ishani Patil and Gugan Karthigeyan, about what audiences can expect! Elias speaks about what drew him to direct this story and how the challenges the characters have faced speak to him deeply. Patil and Karthigeyan talk about what drew them to this show and their process for bringing these characters to life! Exclusive Interview: Josh Prim and Ariel Everitt of Planet Ant's 'The Dog Doesn't Die'

While I'm a lover of horror films, there are some tropes that have been played to death (no pun intended). A dark and stormy night, a demon summoned from a forgotten tome, having to run and open a door while the killer is behind you. However, above all...why must the dog always die in these films?!? Yes, I get it, they are a symbol of everything good and right in the world, so the impact hits like a ton of bricks, but I can't take another film where the best boy or girl meets their demise because of a spooky or unstoppable force! And apparently, I'm not alone in this, as Planet Ant's current production asks the same question in The Dog Doesn't Die. We had the pleasure of speaking with the writer and director of this play, Ariel Everitt, and with one of the cast members, Josh Prim, about the importance of a show like this! In this exclusive BSB interview, Everitt and Prim discuss what it's like to bring a show such as The Dog Doesn't Die to the stage at Planet Ant's black box theater! Everitt discusses where the idea for this play came from and their process for developing the script and bringing their vision to life. Prim talks about what drew them to this project and how they've put their own spin on the character, Will! Exclusive Interview: Brian Martin and Eric Van Tielen of Wayne State University's 'The SpongeBob Musical'

Turning a beloved cartoon into a Broadway spectacle may seem like an idea that should stay buried treasure at the bottom of the sea; however, The SpongeBob Musical somehow perfectly captures what makes the Nickelodeon series work, and gives audiences even more. Audiences are submerged...I mean, immersed in the brilliantly colorful work of Bikini Bottom, with a musical that highlights this universe's oddball humor, bright optimism, and chaotic charm. The result is a production that feels both familiar and completely unexpected, which is why it's the perfect show for The Stage at The Hillberry Gateway at Wayne State University! We recently spoke with director Eric Van Tielen and the main sponge himself, Brian Martin! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Van Tielen and Martin discuss what it's like to dive into the colorful world of SpongeBob SquarePants and just how these creatives are crafting something special for the entire family! Our director discusses the challenge of reusing and upcycling costumes and stagecraft, and where that conscious effort stems from. Martin discusses how he didn't grow up watching the cartoon, and what has gone into creating this iconic character for WSU's stage! 'Maybe Happy Ending' Music and Stagecraft | The BSB Podcast

When you think of the Broadway musical, Maybe Happy Ending, what immediately comes to mind? For some, it could possibly be the touching story of two helperbots finding love and companionship within each other as they journey to Jeju Island. However, if you're like me, one of the most striking aspects of Maybe Happy Ending is its incredible technological feats and impressive staging. The visuals are breathtaking, giving this musical such a distinct identity, as every piece of stagecraft feels thought out and deliberate. Exclusive Interview: Achilles Slee of Pontiac Theatre IV's 'Legally Blonde The Musical'

If you grew up in the early aughts, then there's a good chance you're familiar with the story of Legally Blonde. While Reese Witherspoon was already a movie star in her own right, this film shot her into the stratosphere, making her a household name and forever linking her with the color pink and plenty of sparkle. However, Legally Blonde took on another life when the fabulous magical arrived on the scene, forever changing the story of Elle Woods for the better! Pontiac Theatre IV understands the power of this show, as they've brought Legally Blonde the Musical to their stage, with director Achilles Slee at the helm! We recently spoke with Slee about their time on this production and why the glitter and glam are perfect for this local stage! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Slee discusses what ultimately drew them to direct this production and how important this show/film has been to their life. Exclusive Interview: Andrew Reid and Mike McGettigan of Planet Ant's 'How Romatique'

What's love, anyways, without a few Hallmark tropes thrown in, amirite? As someone who grew up on romantic comedies, the cheesier the romance, the better the investment. At least when it comes to films, that is. The Planet Ant Home Team is both paying homage to the genre while also pointing just a bit of fun at the pure ridiculousness of it with their current original comedy, How Romantique! We had the absolute pleasure of speaking to Mike McGettigan, who is both the director of this play and a cast member in it, and Andrew Reid, who is bringing his comedy chops to the stage! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Mike McGettigan and Andrew Reid discuss how this take on the romantic comedy genre came to be and what the process of developing it entails. McGettigan talks about his process for directing and how, with the Planet Ant Home Team, it truly is collaborative in every way. Every actor helps fine-tune the story and their specific character within it, shaping How Romantique in nearly every way. Both individuals talk about how their background with improv (as the Planet Ant home team is an improv troupe first and foremost), and how that specific brand of comedy has helped shape this play into the very best it can be! Exclusive Interview: Tyrick Wiltez Jones and Jennifer Byrne of Meadow Brook Theatre's 'Come From Away'

While I may have only been in fourth grade, the events of 9/11 will always be burned into my mind. That was a moment in American history that fundamentally changed the world, being one of the biggest tragedies of modern times. But out of the darkest of times can come beautiful things, such as the story of Gander, Newfoundland, which serves as the basis for Come From Away. Meadow Brook Theatre is bringing this inspiring story to its stage, and we spoke with two of the cast members, Tyrick Wiltez Jones and Jennifer Byrne, about this incredible production. In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Jones and Byrne discuss what it's like to join Come From Away and how their history with the events it's inspired by influences their performances. Both actors discuss their personal stories about 9/11, as well as the difficulties of reliving those events throughout this musical. Exclusive Interview: Sydney Assalley-Williams of the Players Guild of Dearborn's 'Next to Normal'

There are some roles and shows that are once-in-a-lifetime theatre experiences, and I think it's safe to say that Next to Normal falls squarely in that category. This musical explores some difficult topics, such as loss, grief, and mental illness, but provides some incredible roles and a stunning narrative that allows actors to showcase their talent. The Players Guild of Dearborn has brought Next to Normal to their stage, and we recently got to speak with Sydney Assalley-Williams, who plays Diana in this production! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Assalley-Williams discusses what it's like to step into a role such as Diana in this musical at the Players Guild of Dearborn. Next to Normal places Diana's mental health at the center of the musical, as she navigates her Bipolar Disorder. The highs and lows can be hard to capture, and this actress speaks about where she pulls from to bring authenticity to the role. 'Liberation' | The BSB Podcast

Everyone has a story to tell, which is just one of the many reasons we should talk with family and friends, so that stories can live on. Memories hold so much power, as that is how people live on forever. While people may pass away, the impact they have on our lives and on the world in general never does. Liberation is a play that honors this, as the main character looks back on an integral moment in her mother's life, in an attempt to resolve her grief and perhaps better understand her mother's choices. This Broadway show from playwright Bess Wohl and director Whitney White is a love letter to Second-Wave feminism as well as the women who shaped that movement, and frankly our lives. Liberation is rich in detail, so we're still dissecting it, which makes it the perfect show to chat about on our most recent episode of The BSB Podcast! In this BSB Podcast episode, hosts Brian Kitson and RJ Miller-Zelinko share their thoughts on what made Liberation such a special play. Beginning with a breakdown of the story, these two deep-dive into each character and how their motivations either enhance the narrative or undermine the show's emotional impact. While exploring a personal story in a larger world, what does Liberation attempt to say about both? Is it possible to find answers from someone who has since passed through those who knew her? This is a real circle-of-life moment for me, as someone who has been a lover and critic of Broadway and theater in general for quite some time, finally getting to see The Lion King on stage for the first time! I know what you're thinking: how have I been to New York City so many times and have yet to see this classic Broadway musical before? I've been wondering that for years, but finally the time has come and I can't be more excited! We recently spoke with Nick LaMedica, who plays Zazu in the touring production, about his time in this musical, which is also a real circle-of-life moment for him! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, LaMedica discusses how he's gone from a young man seeing The Lion King on stage as one of his first musicals to now starring in a production and spreading that joy with other families! Exclusive Interview: Cayla Kolbusz, Kyle Harwood, and Mohamad Mohammad of The Players Guild of Dearborns' 'Next to Normal'

There are some conversations that society tends to deem too sensitive or difficult to have, yet they are also among the most important to talk about, one of which is mental health. As a psychologist, it took me years of training to learn how to talk to people about their mental health, but for so many families, it can be a conversation that feels easier to ignore. This is why shows such as Next to Normal are so important, as not only does it start the conversation, but it normalizes having mental health issues instead of burying them deep. The Players Guild of Dearborn is starting that conversation with its production of Next to Normal, and we spoke with the musical's director, Cayla Kolbusz, and actors Kyle Harwood and Mohamad Mohammad about what audiences can expect! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Kolbusz, Harwood, and Mohammad talk about what drew them to the project and what it's like to have this conversation about mental health! According to Occam's razor, the simplest answer is most often the correct one, a phrase often repeated by the world's greatest detective. However, it doesn't seem like the mystery at the center of Avon Player's Holmes and Watson is exactly simple; instead, it makes the audience question what is true and what is a lie. With three different people claiming to be Sherlock Holmes, Watson has to figure out who is really his best friend and who is lying. We recently spoke with two of the Holmeses, Will Johnson (Holmes #1) and Joseph G. Tobin (Holmes #2), about what it's like to be a part of this production! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Johnson and Tobin talk about what it's like to bring different versions of an iconic character, such as Sherlock Holmes, to life! Exclusive: Bryana Hall of Inspired Acting Company's 'Home'

What does home signal to each of us? For some, it's a destination. A physical place where we return after a long day and rest our heads. A dwelling that allows us to recharge with those we love. However, for others, it could indicate a return to our roots. Perhaps long forgotten, but the magnetic pull of where we come from. There are so many layers to just that one word, and Inspired Acting Company in Walled Lake is ready to peel them back for audiences with their production of Samm-Art Williams Home. We recently spoke with the show's director, Bryana Hall, about what audiences might find when they step into this theatre for this production! In this exclusive BSB Insider Interview, Hall discusses what initially drew her to the project and why this feels like the perfect time to bring this story to the Inspired Acting Company! With a unique sound, quite literally, Hall explores the challenges of finding the play's voice and the incredible work the cast and crew are doing to achieve it. Exclusive Interview: Stella Fenton and Josephine O'Reilly of Birmingham Village Players' 'The Diary of Anne Frank'

I remember being in World History back in high school, and my teacher loved to repeat a single line after each topic: "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Now I know this is a variation of the famous line by Winston Churchill and wasn't something my teacher came up with; however, it has become ingrained in my head. This is one of the reasons that plays such as The Diary of Anne Frank are so important, to continue educating people about the pains of the past in hopes of a brighter future. We recently spoke with two of the cast members of Birmingham Village Players' production of The Diary of Anne Frank, Stella Fenton and Josephine O'Reilly, about what audiences can expect from this play! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Stella Fenton and Josephine O'Reilly discuss what drew them to this show and the weight of telling the story of the Frank family. The BSB Podcast featuring Robert Bannon!

We count our blessings every day to be able to do what we do and share our passion with theater (and entertainment in general) with all of our readers and listeners, as it has truly been such a highlight of our lives. However, every once in a while, we still have one of those pinch-me moments as we continue on this journey with BSB Insider, as it's hard to believe what has become from such simple beginnings. Take Robert Bannon's appearance on an episode of The BSB Podcast as one of those moments, because never in our wildest dreams did we think we'd be talking with this multi-faceted talent about his impressive career on stage and as a podcaster. From putting on shows of his own, recording an album that means so much to him, and now the face and voice of The Round Table, there's no stopping Bannon's dedication and talent when it comes to his passions. On this episode of the BSB Podcast, hosts Brian Kitson and RJ Miller-Zelinko flip the script, or in this case perhaps the table, and discuss Bannon's incredible career from his early days at Juilliard to his reinvention that came in his 30's. He's starred as Roger in Rent, performed at 54 Below, and made his way into our neck of the woods here in Detroit, only to find continued success as one of the leading figures in the Broadway podcasting world. However, perhaps the biggest takeaway from this episode is that in the world of theatre and music, there's always room at the table with Robert Bannon. Exclusive Interview: Nolan White of 'The Outsiders'

I remember reading S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders in school and being deeply moved by its core message. The importance of family, but not necessarily the family you were born into, but the friends who become part of your unit along the way. No matter the loss or the trials we go through, our family will be there for us, and together we can get through anything that happens. That strength remains in the musical adaptation of The Outsiders, and we had the pleasure of speaking with Nolan White, who plays PonyBoy in the North American touring production of this Tony Award-winning musical! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Nolan White talks about how he went from a student at the University of Michigan to securing the coveted spot in this incredible show. Taking on the role of PonyBoy isn't always easy, as The Outsiders is a complete emotional rollercoaster, but White talks about his process for stepping into and out of the show. 'Chicago' Music and Stagecraft | The BSB Podcast

There's nothing quite like all that jazz, and Broadway has consistently brought the heat since 1996, when Chicago made it's trimpuhant return to New York City. Having found a home at the Ambassador Theatre, Chicago has brought down the house night after night, with one of the most classic Broadway shows that you can still find in the Big Apple. So what is it about this show that keeps bringing people in 30 years later? Perhaps part of that has to do with the timeless music and impressive dancing that continues to razzle and dazzle audiences, which is just a piece of the puzzle we'll be discussing today! In this episode of the BSB Podcast, hosts Brian Kitson and RJ Miller-Zelinko break down the music and stagecraft of Broadway's Chicago. From songs we were familiar with to pieces that spoke to us on so many levels, there are so many musical aspects and performances to discuss. Also, Chicago has stripped away any big, flashy sets, placing the focus on those on stage and the talent they possess. In that regard, which performance struck us as top of the game, and which left us scratching our heads? Listen as we give our thoughts and final verdicts on this long-running Broadway show! 'Chicago' Story and Characters | The BSB Podcast

Broadway's Chicago is truly all that jazz, and then some. Since its 1975 debut, this vaudeville-inspired musical has been winking at audiences while picking their pockets of sympathy, certainty, and any lingering faith in the justice system. In a show that turns murder into a media event and the courtroom into a cabaret, audiences are transported to a world as flashy as it is dark, reflective of the world we live in. So what makes Chicago a spectacle that continues to draw audiences in day after day, and year after year? That's certainly what we're hoping to get to the bottom of in our two-part Chicago musical discussion! So, where do we begin in this breakdown of Broadway's (currently) longest show? With the characters and story, of course! In this episode of the BSB podcast, hosts Brian Kitson and RJ Miller-Zelinko explore the story of Chicago and its impact on Broadway. From characters such as Roxy Hart and Velma Kelly, to the incomparable Mama Morton, there are plenty of characters to discuss. Which performances steal the show, and which ones make us wish for a quick sentencing from the jury? Does the story pull us in as much as we thought it would, or did we walk away with a strong desire for something else? Listen to this fun episode to find out! Exclusive Interview: Olivia Deane, Steve Sedore, and Catherine LaPointe of Livonia Community Theatre's 'The White Rose'

What would you be willing to risk for the truth? What a powerful question to think about, and for many of us, the answer might be just about anything. The White Rose plunges audiences into the story of two students who dared to defy one of history’s most brutal regimes. Inspired by the real-life resistance movement in Nazi Germany, the drama focuses on those who confront fear and doubt, and the terrifying consequences of speaking out. Rather than depicting grand battles or sweeping revolutions, the play focuses on something quieter and vastly more powerful: the courage of ordinary individuals who refuse to remain silent. With the show opening tonight at the Livonia Community Theatre, we had the pleasure of speaking with the director of this production, Olivia Deane, along with two of the cast members, Steve Sedore and Catherine LaPointe! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Deane, Sedore, and LaPointe discuss what has drawn them to be a part of this production and why this story feels so important to tell today. Exclusive Interview: Kez Settle of Detroit Mercy Theatre Company's 'Poor Clare'

I think it's safe to say that most people want to do good in this world. Growing up, my mother would always tell my siblings and me that one of our only goals in life was to "Do good, shut up, and go home," which ultimately meant we should aspire to do good for those around us and live a life we feel good about. Similar to a doctor's code of honor, she wanted us to do no harm and spread kindness, which is also a sentiment that St. Clare of Assisi shares with her religious mission. It's St. Clare's story that lies at the core of Detroit Mercy Theatre Company's Poor Clare, their current production in their new black box theatre. We spoke with the director of this production, Kez Settle, about what audiences can expect from this show! In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Kez Settle discusses what drew her to wanting to direct this show and if she was familiar with the story before coming onto the project. O'Reilly explores her writing process with her writing partner and how they had the actors picked out before the show was even written. Exclusive Interview: Briana O’Neal and Diane Hill of Theatre NOVA's 'Kayak'

There are shows that are purely for entertainment, and then there are some that leave us feeling unsettled, like a current moving beneath still water. Kayak is one of those plays that leaves audiences deeply moved and introspective about the world they live in and the people they surround themselves with. As its title suggests, the play becomes a vessel carrying its characters across emotional waters that are at once intimate and universal. We spoke to director Briana O'Neal and cast member Diane Hill of Theatre Nova's Kayak about how this production came to be and what audiences can expect. In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Briana O'Neal and Diane Hill discuss what drew them to this product and how this production has been challenging. With most of the play consisting of monologues and Hill staying in one place, there's always the challenge of keeping the show moving and engaging, which both the director and the actress discuss. With a story that explores the intersection of our obligations to the world and environment with our personal lives and relationships, Kayak has plenty to digest and explore, all of which is discussed in this exciting interview! Exclusive Interview: Dani Cochrane & Cheryl Turski of Meadow Brook Theatre's 'What The Constitution Means to Me'

So many plays ask big questions about love, identity, or ambition. However, What the Constitution Means to Me asks something even bigger: What does a document written in 1787 actually mean for people living right now? Perhaps this is a question we should ask ourselves more often, but we think about it far too little. Heidi Schreck's work answers this question, though it may be far more personal—and complicated—than anyone expects. We spoke with two cast members from Meadow Brook Theatre's production of What the Constitution Means to Me, Dani Cochrane and Cheryl Turski, about the play's power and impact. In this exclusive BSB Insider interview, Cochrane and Turski discuss what drew them to this project and why What the Constitution Means to Me is so important to tell in this current landscape. These two actresses discuss how sharing the role in this Meadow Brook Theatre production has helped them both shape their performances, and how having someone else to bounce ideas off during character development is a rare gift. Cochrane and Turski discuss what it's like to step into another person's story and the weight of carrying Schreck's story in this show.
