Having long since hit her stride, Steff Mahan's third CD, Never a Long Way Home, successfully captures her witty, charming and soul-wrenching gifts. This CD was taken into the studio and recorded live, and it emotionally delivers the cathartic moods of the songs. The listener is taken on a soulful journey mirroring the ups and downs of life. Narrated by the beautiful singing voice that so eloquently composes life's most important moments, this CD is bound to move any listener. Succeeding largely on her own terms, Steff plays music because she loves it and because she wants to share this love with others. Episode 22: Direct from Nashville TN, Singer/Songwriter Cheley Tackett in the Cafe

When Cheley Tackett presents her introspective material, audiences are quick to recognize and appreciate her deceptively simple, but instantly engaging, style of lyricism. It is a mark of artistic virtuosity and range when a singer-songwriter can make you dance in your car one minute and then have you purposely miss your exit the next. Tackett’s warm spirit, heated intelligence and burning talent made her a winner at both Merlefests Chris Austin Songwriting Contest and the Kerrville Folk Festival following in the footsteps of Nancy Griffith, John Gorka and Lucinda Williams. Cheley's extremely soulful voice is like another instrument that brings a tangible wonder to her performances as she climbs, soars and holds notes that leave the audience in wide eyed wonder. "It's not often that singer-songwriters can sing like this," says producer Jim Tract. "Cheley has power and style, and most of all, control. It's very special. Add to that the fact that she can write some of the most deeply introspective songs, and you've got an unbeatable combination." Tackett resists being boxed in to any one genre with Americana probably as close as you will get. The bottom line is, Cheley, like most of us, truly appreciates a great song regardless of genre, and that's how she focuses her writing. http://www.reverbnation.com/label/adroitrecords#/cheleytackett http://www.cheleytackett.com http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/tackett2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUxZPgcGlj0 www.thecootercafe.com www.facebook.com/people/Cheley-Tackett http://www.adroitrecords.com/-h2-cheley-tackett-h2-cms-36

Episode 20: Audrey Cecil shares her debut album with The Cooter Cafe

Audrey Cecil, a Louisville KY singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, got her start playing the coffee shop circuit in her college days as part of a female acoustic duo called A-Squared. These days, Audrey has graduated to playing well over 100 shows per year as part of two Louisville KY bands: an acoustic duo (Amanda Lucas and Audrey Cecil) with music partner, Amanda Lucas; and a band called Two Cent Penny, which Lucas is also part of. Two Cent Penny released an EP in September of 2007 called "August", on which Cecil exchanged songwriting, instrument playing, and singing duties with Rob Gable. In 2008, Lucas and Cecil made a simple live recording of the duo’s songs at a local venue, and upon request, made the recording available at the duo’s shows only. In only a few months, Cecil and Lucas sold over 200 copies of that simple live recording. Most recently, Cecil did some guitar and vocal session work, and team songwriting on Lucas’ CD “Half Empty”. Cecil continues to sing, write, and play with the same passion that she did just starting out. “Amanda Lucas and Audrey Cecil” and “Two Cent Penny” continually grow in popularity; and Lucas and Cecil have made a great name for themselves in the midwest and southern regions of the US, being repeatedly invited back to play some of the best small venues in the region. http://www.myspace.com/audreycecil http://www.audreycecil.com/ http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/audrey-cecil/id353709856 Music provided by: Audrey Cecil from the Album : Audrey Cecil Available on itunes and cdbaby

Episode 19: Singer/ Songwriter Julie Schurr joins Weezer in the Cafe.

Julie Schurr has 10 years of local performance experience in her home-bases of Michigan and Missouri. Since graduating from college in 2006, Julie has been touring full time, rapidly growing her fan base throughout the Southeastern U.S., with Pride Festivals, HCR, and NCLR fundraisers as highlights of her tour. For the remainder of 2007, Julie will be out on tour and finishing up her 2nd album, which is planned for release in early 2008. Growing up, Julie Schurr never heard music that might have made life a little bit easier for a lesbian girl being raised in the strictly-proscribed constraints of a religiously conservative community and home. In fact, she wasn't supposed to be listening to music at all. She wasn't supposed to know what a lesbian was. Let alone BE one. Thankfully, Julie Schurr survived her childhood and eventually escaped the holy land by running off to a heathen college for some higher education. Fully committed to exploring the new landscape as she worked her way through college, Julie encountered "lesbian music" for the first time. And after a while Julie realized that yes, the music she listened to in college finally used the right pronouns, but it still wasn't very reflective of her own life. Most of it was just a little too polished, a little too whitewashed, a little too -- nice. Ugh. Julie has never been one to shy away from a challenge. If she couldn't find the lesbian musical equivalent of gritty street journalism nicely packaged on the music store shelves, she would have to create it herself. Julie Schurr bought a guitar, taught herself how to play it, and drew from a deep bag of of creative writing tricks to wrestle twenty years' worth of memoir into critically-insightful yet personable sound-bites of song. With all the right pronouns, of course. An original creation, Julie Schurr's fusion of musical styling and technique is all her own: Indierockbitchfolk. She's been showcasing it to her fans in St. Louis and Detroit, winning loyal converts. Now that she's finished her degree & produced a full-length album, she just can't imagine any other career path. So it's a good thing that album sales are steadily rising and venues keep opening their doors. In 2007, track down Julie Schurr on the open road, touring the U.S. as she promotes her first album. Discography: To Her: The Bittersweet. 2006 Available on CD Baby, JulieSchurr.Com, and iTunes. www.julieschurr.com www.myspace/julieschurr www.reverbnation.com/julieschurr www.cdbaby/julieschurr Music provided by Julie Schurr / Album: To Her: The Bittersweet www.thecootercafe.com [email protected]
