    Oxchloride X

The great end of the world story...The hole that eats everything. Script by Arch Oboler, written January 16, revised January 18, and revised again on January 23. Approved by NBC censors January 24. At that time, the program belonged to NBC, having expanded from a 15 minute time slot originating from WENR in Chicago with Wyllis Cooper as the script writer, to a half-hour format beginning June of 1936. Cooper pretty much walked away in 1936, since he was stationed in Chicago and the series made the transition to NYC, and seven writers (including Arch Oboler) on a rotating basis, contributed scripts. That's when Oboler first wrote "Oxycloride X." Regrettably, that 1938 production does not exist. If it was transcribed from an air check, it was lost or destroyed. The same script was performed a second time with a different cast on February 16, 1943, when Oboler got permission from NBC to do a revival of the horror program, using the LIGHTS OUT! name, for CBS. Ironized Yeast sponsored that series. Contract between Oboler and CBS dated August 3, 1942 stated Ironized Yeast would sponsor the series for a total of 52 weeks with no pre-emptions or cancellations without their permission.
