The Dewatch Podcast
by DewatchPod
Jim with a G has seen Black Mirror, Jorgen hasn't. Gim thinks it's gone downhill, and we're watching seasons in reverse order to find out. Right after watching each episode, we try for an earnest, deep analysis of what we just watched, and get into our feelings about what it means. Join us in uncovering deep questions like "How far can an unsustainable system go?", "What has technology done with intimacy?", and "Have you considered that phones might be bad for you?" as we Dewatch Black Mirror.Intro & Outro for episodes about Season 6 are from:"Feral Angel Waltz" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensecreativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Season 5:Cloud Dancer Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attri

Lower Decks S03 hampered my peanuts
I'm sorry i couldn't resist once i thought of it. Lower Decks S05 has three episodes tied for worst
What do an overbearing aunt, a rogue nanite swarm and a rebel coming of age have in common? For one, they're in the most formulaic episodes of the season! At least there will always be the promise that the a and b plots will collide in the denuement and neutralize each other.Write in to the DewatchPod at gmail address!Intro and Outro music by Kevin MacLeod.

The Lower Decks Finale feels like fanfic
I propose the following program:Lift all intellectual property law, with the exception of the right to make literal copies of a work. If you want to release a sixth game of thrones book, you can, you just can't impersonate george martin. You can make another batman film, but you can't just sell copies of existing ones out the back of your van. Stories have always been communal, often retold and revised. Our cultural stagnation is self-imposed for the benefit who don't even know half the stories they supposedly "own".Write in to the DewatchPod at gmail address!Intro and Outro music by Kevin MacLeod.

Blindsight is when you're in touch with your feelings
Imagine you are the Dewatch Podcast:You wake up after an extensive christmas break, gasping for meaning from a story pulsating with it. You can feel the air, dry in the winter months, focing its way through your vocal chords, speaking ideas after months of emptiness. The episode length inflates in pieced-together increments, as one sentence is chained to the next, caffeine stirs groggy neurons. Your bits have seized up through disuse. You're a small thing, interpreting a large thing in medias res.Write in to the DewatchPod at gmail address!Intro and Outro music by Kevin MacLeod.

What is Starfleet? A miserable pile of secrets!
In which Star Trek provocatively asks: Wouldn't it be nice if a military hegemon were the good guys, not because of anything they did to be structurally transparent or accountable, but because the troops on the front line just did their darn best to do the right thing (not intervene in an extremely uneven conflict)?I switched this one ahead to spare you from being hit with it right before the holidays. Black Mirror wants us to think
I think that, as societies, we are remarkably good at adjusting to "new normals", but quite bad at reflecting on those changes, especially with so much of media getting swallowed by finance and megacorps. Now, while I would be ever so happy to live in a world where black mirror is the middle of the pack in a rich field of art wrestling with the cavalcading changes happening ever so quickly, it's certainly the most prominent and probably one of the best attempts we have. Thanks for thinking through it with us, folks.Write in to the DewatchPod at gmail address!Intro and Outro music by Kevin MacLeod.

Season 7 is a return to form

Common People get the short end
i have this pet theory that all advertising is essentially information pollution (they have to say the thing is good so it's always in bad faith) and should be banned, but that the information function of advertisment is needed, but should be replaced by review and product journalism (which should probably be funded by like giving everyone a base budget they can spend on news / reviews)Write in to the DewatchPod at gmail address!Intro and Outro music by Kevin MacLeod.

Fifteen Million Merits is the worth of adblock
"The rise of social media, and the fear it has produced in television executives, means that shows like Hot Shots are saturated with anxiety – not only the anxiety of the hot shots, who are often selected for their hair-trigger tempers or psychic weaknesses, but the anxiety of the producers, always looking for the next hashtag outrage, for provocations that will go viral. This anxiety, and the surrounding social situation that engenders it, takes us beyond the cool ambivalence of Warhol’s aesthetic." - Mark Fisher, 2015Write in to the DewatchPod at gmail address!Intro and Outro music by Kevin MacLeod.

White Bearly getting it till the end
It's interesting how this episode is quite reminiscent of a videogame in large parts considering the way it is about entertainment. It's also interesting that the arctic and the antarctic are named for their relation to bears, but the constellation. But I reckon they wouldn't have kept it if they had found bears in the antarctic but not the arctic, but maybe I'm just being optimistic.Write in to the DewatchPod at gmail address!Intro and Outro music by Kevin MacLeod.

Brooker originally pitched season 3 of BM to channel four but they changed their mind, ordering a movie instead, leading him to make an anthology episode for his anthology series. "We don't need a melting pot for our service, Mr. Brooker. We need a salad bowl. In a salad bowl, you put in the different things.
