I don't know who I would be without Emetophobia: Emetophobia and the Identity Crisis
This episode centres around the concept of Emetophobia forming part of a person's identity. Identity as defined by Erikson, E. H. (1968), is a coherent sense of self that develops over time. Once a person has created Emetophobia, it can become all consuming very quickly so that many people start to identify as 'an emetophobe' and then struggle to understand or ever imagine who they could be without it.Research suggests the mean onset of Emetophobia is age 11 and, if left untreated, almost always continues into adulthood. Meaning by the time they seek treatment, many people have suffered for many years of their life and the fear becomes part of who they identify as. As humans we have around 50,000 thoughts a day and for an emetophobia sufferer, around 45,000 of those thoughts are directly or indirectly linked to Emetophobia. This means that they start to perceive the fear as part of themselves; they are someone with Emetophobia or 'an emetophobe' rather than seeing the fear as simply something they are currently creating.Erin describes her journey with Emetophobia and how her identity was shaped by her struggle. Her parents introduced her as 'shy' and in her younger years she became friends with another girl who also suffered with Emetophobia and they created a shared sense of humour around their phobia. At one point Erin struggled to foresee a version of herself without Emetophobia. However, as she worked through the Emetophobia-Free programme, she began to understand that her identity wasn't linked to Emetophobia. Erin has now liberated herself from her 'emetophobe' identity. Erin describes her identity now is an ex-emetophobe, a dance teacher and a thriving person! She now sees her identity as something that is never static, something to nurture, develop and grow and something she excited to keep exploring! She knows she can create whatever identity she wants for herself - she is the author of her own narrative!Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both.
The Language That Fuels Emetophobia and How to Change It
How often do you tell yourself: “I can’t handle this” or “That would be absolutely awful”? Once a day? Ten times? Every time you feel slightly nauseous? In this episode, Michelle Johnson and Samantha Marker explore how language quietly fuels emetophobia and how changing your words can begin changing your fear. Because your inner voice isn’t just background noise… it’s running the whole show. Emetophobia isn’t maintained by physical sensations; it’s maintained by the meaning we attach to them. When nausea is labelled as “dangerous,” “unbearable,” or “a catastrophe,” the brain and body react accordingly. Over time, those repeated phrases become beliefs and beliefs shape behaviour.👉 The Catastrophic Language LoopMany emetophobes don’t realise how extreme their internal dialogue has become. Words like 'always, never, unbearable, dangerous, worst-case scenario' creep in automatically. The brain hears those cues and responds with urgency. Anxiety rises. Physical sensations intensify. The language becomes more dramatic. And the cycle continues. The first step? Self-awareness. Noticing what you’re saying to yourself without judgement. Because you can’t change language you’re not conscious of.👉 The Influence of Media & External VoicesIt’s not just your inner voice. Headlines, social media posts, and dramatic storytelling often distort and amplify perceived risk. Words like “outbreak,” “spreading rapidly,” or “highly contagious” can create disproportionate fear. When you’re already sensitive to sickness-related cues, this language hits harder. Learning to question these messages - and to respond with balanced, critical thinking - reduces their emotional impact.👉 Rewording for ResilienceRewording doesn’t mean forced positivity. It means accuracy. Instead of: “This is unbearable.” Try: “This feels uncomfortable, but I can cope.”Instead of: “I'd rather die than be sick.”Try: “Being sick is unpleasant and uncomfortable but it is temporary and it would pass.” Your words shape your beliefs. Your beliefs shape your reactions. Change the language first - and the mindset will follow.Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Exercise and Emetophobia - How to reclaim your fitness!
Do you avoid exercise because of your fear of being sick? Do you fear you will accidentally push yourself too hard and vomit? Or do you fear you will see someone else be sick while exercising? Do you also find exercise disheartening because you never feel fit enough or good enough? This episodes delves into the relationship between emetophobia and exercise.Michelle Johnson is joined this week by ex semi-professional football player and ex-emetophobe, Sophie Lee. Sophie shares her personal journey with emetophobia, highlighting how her early love for sports, particularly football, helped her maintain a positive relationship with exercise despite her fear. The conversation emphasises the unique experiences of emetophobia sufferers, noting that not everyone struggles with exercise in the same way. The episode covers various tips for easing back into exercise. Michelle and Sophie discuss how certain bodily symptoms such as an increased heart-rate and sweating are symptoms of both exercise and anxiety. This can lead some emetophobia sufferers to avoid exercise as they mis-read their bodily signals and label them as dangerous instead of a normal bodily response to increased activity. Michelle and Sophie discuss easing back into exercise slowly, finding activities you actually enjoy, and challenging perfectionist thinking. The discussion also touches on social confidence in gym settings, encouraging listeners to focus on their own experiences rather than others' perceptions. Overall, the episode serves as a motivational guide for emetophobia sufferers seeking to reclaim their relationship with exercise and improve their mental and physical well-being.Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Hope for the most 'complex' cases of Emetophobia: Sophie's self-led journey to freedom
We have had lots of incredible guests on the Emetophobia-Free podcast but today's guest Sophie is truly exceptional. Sophie's Emetophobia started at a young age and was so severe that she spent the full 7 years at CAMHS. Sophie's Emetophobia was so debilitating that she was unable to leave the room without the assistance of someone else and at one point she made an attempt to end her own life. The professionals involved in her care held case study meetings about her as she was so 'complex and complicated'. When she was discharged at 19 she was told there was little to no help in adult services and her long term prognosis was poor...Despite being told this and armed with multiple diagnoses including Autism, ADHD, IBS, an eating disorder, severe OCD and depression, Sophie persevered in her mission to get herself over Emetophobia. With consistent effort, dedication and focus, Sophie got herself over her fear using the Emetophobia-Free manual alone. Sophie's story is absolutely invaluable to anyone going through the programme as she shares useful insights from her long journey through the programme. With regards to her ASD, Sophie explains; "Its not about being like other people, its about celebrating me. If I was sick, I would cope with it... Being over emetophobia doesn't mean you ‘look the same as someone else’, its about being able to live the life you want to live.Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Why Chronic Illness Won’t Stop You from Overcoming Emetophobia
We receive many emails from people who are suffering from Emetophobia alongside a diagnosed medical condition (IBS, Crohn's disease, POTs, Celiac disease to name but a few). Many are concerned that their diagnosis will stop them from overcoming the Emetophobia and so are reluctant to engage in the programme. In today's episode, Sam Marker and Michelle dive into why a medical condition is not a barrier to you overcoming Emetophobia and how the programme will ultimately help you to manage the symptoms of your condition. Sam herself is diagnosed with a nervous system disorder that shares some of the symptoms of Emetophobia. By going through the programme, Sam was not only able to completely overcome her Emetophobia but is now able to confidently manage the physical symptoms of her disorder. Before the programme, Sam was unable to differentiate which physical symptom was Emetophobia/anxiety induced and which was a medical condition but since overcoming her phobia she has gained true clarity. Sam discusses the nervous system condition which affects all parts of her body; her temperature, heart rate, digestive system, limbs and various other areas. When experiencing emetophobia panic attacks, Sam would struggle to regulate any part of her body and assumed all of her symptoms were caused by her anxiety. Since overcoming her fear, Sam can comfortably navigate her physical symptoms in a resilient and powerful way.Sam highlights her thought processes pre-programme, and how she felt completely catastrophic, helpless and black and white. Since learning what tends to induce her physical symptoms, she is able to prepare appropriately and give her body what it needs rather than allow her thinking to spiral. The way Sam processes her physical symptoms has become empowering and proactive and she now fully understands the importance of solid mental health on her ability to manage any medical diagnosis effectively and powerfully. Michelle and Sam discuss the fact that despite a medical diagnosis, the Emetophobia-free programme will enable you to effectively manage your thinking which in turn, enables you to manage your physical symptoms!Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Why Thriving Parents Are Key to Helping Kids Beat Emetophobia
Coach Chloe joins Michelle Johnson on this week's episode to discuss her tumultuous journey through the programme with her daughter Ava who was suffering with Emetophobia. Despite supporting Ava as best she could through the programme, Chloe was struggling to see the progress in Ava. It was only once Chloe turned the spotlight inwards did she discover the barriers that were preventing herself and therefore Ava from thriving and overcoming Ava's phobia. Ava was 11 when she finally began the Emetophobia-free programme. Sadly her motivation, engagement and belief in the programme had been impacted by her previous therapies such as exposure therapy, which had increased her fear about anything working for her. She has created and maintained the belief that she was the 1 person this wouldn’t work for. Despite Chloe believing she was coping well at the time of supporting Ava through the programme ,she now recognises that her personal attitude was not ‘thriving’, which was having a direct impact on Ava’s progress (little to her knowledge at the time!). Once Chloe recognised her own lack of self-belief, she understood that despite being 100% committed to Ava’s learning, she was completely neglecting her own thoughts, coping skills, and attitude. Too Afraid to Eat: Why Emetophobia Didn't Take Our Granddaughter From Us
In today’s episode, Debi Morgan joins Michelle Johnson to discuss her journey of supporting her granddaughter through the Emetophobia-free programme. Debi discusses the best ways to support family members who are experiencing emetophobia, pitfalls they may experience along the way and tips on how to avoid them!Debi’s granddaughter began showing signs of emetophobia at the age of 11, despite spending her childhood in great spirits with lots of friends and hobbies. During the period of change from elementary to high school, she began experiencing heightened anxiety, nausea, began rejecting the idea of going to school/socialising and displayed a concerning decrease in food consumption.Debi’s family worked hard at explaining the importance of eating, however because she wanted to avoid being sick, this was not beneficial for her granddaughter. After several intense medical tests, it was apparent that there was nothing physically wrong with her. During this period Deb's grandaughter limited her food and drink to the point she was unable to walk from lack of nutrition and was admitted to hospital and tube fed for a period. Debi’s mother discovered the Emetophobia-free programme which was a complete and utter breakthrough for her. By learning how to improve the thoughts her daughter was creating about sickness, she was able to completely transform her mindset about sickness.Debi’s granddaughter continues to work on improving her mindset even today, but is confident in her ability to cope with difficult situations, including the idea of sickness.3 tips for parents/guardians of an emetophobia suffererDon’t fight control with control: Being forceful creates resistance, and allowing them to make a decision is providing them with a feeling of powerLearn to Thrive yourself, so that you can support the child/young personRespond, don’t react: Allow them the space to learn how to cope, rather than providing them with the solutions Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Why is imagination SO important when it comes to overcoming Emetophobia?
In today’s episode, Coach Matt and Coach Michelle discuss the power of our imagination when it comes to overcoming emetophobia. If you're not actively using your imagination to help you, it will likely be working against you... so get comfy and get ready to really explore what it means to use our imagination well. The power of our imaginationMichelle discusses the use of imagination in overcoming Emetophobia; If you imagine yourself not coping, despite really working hard and putting in effort to cope better, your imagination will win. You will continue to practise the unwanted experience because you’re imagining yourself struggling to handle itIt is easy to imagine a situation going wrong, and to practise an unhelpful safety seeking behaviour. Why? Because this is the habit you have been practising every single day whilst having emetophobia. Throughout the programme, you will learn that to create a new, more helpful habits, you need to start imagining the positive outcomes! Picture doing that task, entering that room, making that cup of tea, in a more positive and helpful way, without the continuous restrictions! Psychology has repetitively shown us the importance of this; however, it is important to understand that when using your imagination to create a positive and desired outcome, your mind is likely to wander because this is a completely new skill that you are practising! Transforming your imagination takes patience and repetition, but over time you will gain an understanding of your new skills which will enable you to overcome your Emetophobia.Coach Matt describes the power of the programme, and how it portrays the importance of simply recognising that we do have control over how we respond to information. When running on auto pilot, we imagine the worst-case scenario because its all we have already done! Once we understand the importance of picturing a more positive outcome, such as handling something slightly better, we can begin to transform our mindset and in turn, our responses! No Coach, No Problem: Sarah’s Solo Journey Through the Emetophobia-Free Programme
We were delighted to welcome Emetophobia-Free Thriver of The Year 2024 winner Sarah to join us on the podcast! Sarah shares her story of overcoming emetophobia with just the Emetophobia-Free manual. The phobia began for Sarah at 12 years old when she experienced an episode of public sickness. The embarrassment Sarah felt caused her to create avoidance techniques in all areas of her life to try and ensure that she never experienced it again.Sarah explains that after vomiting in public she became ‘obsessed’ with what was happening within her body. Sarah was continuously body checking, obsessing over her experiences and feelings and began building incredibly unhelpful beliefs around what food could cause sickness. Sarah began believed that being sick was shameful, embarrassing and a completely terrifying, despite understanding that it was completely out of her control. Sarah believed that if she wasn’t in control of all aspects of her life, she would be sick. Understandably, this became extremely exhausting, and Sarah was no longer living, she was simply surviving. A missed family trip to Prague was the catalyst for Sarah recognising that something had to change and taking steps to overcoming her Emetophobia. Sarah made the common mistake of joining a group online for Emetophobia sufferers. She quickly learned that this was unhelpful as it simply validated her experience and failed to allow her to challenge her unhelpful perspective. After discovering the Emetophobia-Free programme, she embarked upon the journey to Emetophobia-Free without the support of a coach. Sarah expresses the importance behind following the actions within the programme, as well as applying yourself once the 8 weeks are complete, in order to reprocess what has been learned! In Sarah’s words ‘don’t strive for perfection, because this is impossible’. During those moments of weakness, see it as opportunities to apply what has been learned. Coping skills are the gift that the programme provides you!'Michelle and Sarah discuss the fact that progress often doesn't appear linear, and perfection is unnecessary. Patience, consistency and having an open mind is the key to success! How do you know when you’re over Emetophobia?
It seems like an obvious question doesn't it... but the unhelpful thinking styles and limiting beliefs shared by emetophobes the world over often create doubt and uncertainty when it comes to knowing if they are over their emetophobia or not... so let's dive in!How do you know when you’re over Emetophobia?Emetophobia is experienced when you are plagued with negative thoughts surrounding sick, whether this be yourself or other people. It drives your decisions and behaviours which end up limiting your entire life because you truly believe you just can’t cope. When you can recognise that you strongly dislike the idea of sickness and would prefer it not to happen but are aware that you would be able to cope if it was to happen, you no longer have a phobia, just an intense dislike! Understanding this is important, because the perfectionist thinking style can cause people to believe they still have the phobia because they still strongly dislike the idea of it and would rather it didn't happen. But think about it... does anyone hear about a sickness bug and think 'Oh yes please I hope I catch it next?' No, it is just perfectionist thinking to think you would be indifferent to it, most people see being sick as an inconvenience and an unpleasant situation they would prefer not to happen. The difference between a phobia and a dislike is the belief in your ability to get through it and cope if it were to happen... Claire highlights that expecting to enjoy being sick is not the goal, nor is it the reality. The programme provides you with the mindset around how to be okay with being uncomfortable, which will ultimately set you free! Overcoming emetophobia isn’t limited to just ‘coping with sickness’, it is about handling whatever life throws in your direction! You aren’t expected to enjoy these situations or never have a negative thought, but you gain concrete evidence in yourself that you CAN cope with getting through the situation despite the challenging thought.Claire and Michelle confirm that coping does not mean coping ‘perfectly’, it is about navigating the situation and managing the situation in a more helpful way! This is how you KNOW you are over your emetophobia! I Lost Who I Was While Trying to Help My Daughter Overcome Emetophobia: A Mum's Journey
Navigating life as a parent when your child is suffering from Emetophobia can be really difficult. Claire shares the difficulties she faced while helping her daughter through Emetophobia and how the pressure of the situation took a toll on her sense of self and identity. This is an inspiring story of a mum who dedicated so much of herself to her child that she lost herself along the way and had to rebuild herself in the wake of her daughter's experience. Claire’s daughter, Lauren, was around 7 years old when she began showingsymptoms of emetophobia. Life for Lauren consisted of extreme anxiety surrounding social events and anything outside of her comfort zone. Claire discusses the fact that Lauren believed an experience had led to her developing emetophobia. Lauren therefore felt she needed to avoid certain situations to remain safe. Due to a lack of understanding at the time, Claire began assisting with her avoidance. Little did she know that this was just strengthening her daughter’s belief that she couldn’t cope. Very quickly, the family stopped socialising, began cancelling plans and started to withdraw from social situations to ‘protect’ Lauren. Claire began experiencing her own increased anxiety due to the drastic change. After countless hours of unsuccessful CBT and helpless googling, Claire discovered the Emetophobia-free programme. Once Claire had embarked on the programme she quickly realised that she wasn't helping Lauren due to her own limiting beliefs. This breakthrough led Claire to identify and improve her own catastrophic thinking which transformed her own life as well as her daughters! Both Lauren and Claire quickly learned that by increasing their self-esteem and challenging those limiting beliefs, they could achieve a powerful and resilient mental health. As a result of the programme, Claire views herself as a better parent because she has overcome her own barriers and setbacks which were holding her back!Since going through the programme herself, and understanding just howlife-changing it is, Claire is now a coach herself! 6–8 Weeks Is Possible, But Your Emetophobia Recovery Is Not a Race
In this episode Michelle Johnson is joined by Coach Samantha Marker to talk about the 6-8 week timeframe mentioned in the programme. The podcast is incredibly reassuring with the main message being that recovery within 6-8 weeks is entirely possible but if that isn't your journey then there is nothing wrong with that. Your journey is as unique as you are but because the programme is entirely predicatable, if you keep working and applying the skills you WILL beat your phobia, no matter how long it takes! Both coaches reflect on their own journeys which took longer than the 6-8 weeks. Coach Sam’s journey took around a year, and Coach Michelle’s recovery took around 9 months.Like learning to drive, maintaining new habit of Thriving takes consistent effort! By attending the sessions/reading the manual, you are being provided with skills, however the practise and application of the programme is what will transform your life. The time it takes you does not matter, you are in no competition with anyone else. The programme is predictable and you WILL get thereIn Michelle’s words, the comfort zone of an Emetophobe is the most uncomfortable comfort zone there is!After the programme, it becomes as easy not to create the phobia as it was to create it, it just requires your application of the learning between the start and finishing line.In Samantha’s words, ‘the more you practise these skills, the easier it becomes. It isworth every single bit of effort to feel like yourself again’.Fixating on other peoples experience or time scales is only going to slow you down.Focus on your own journey, your own goals and your own future!Samantha reminds us that just because we experience the unhelpful thought, itdoesn’t mean you aren’t over the phobia. As long as you challenge yourself in other areas, you can process it as part of the journey which shows you that you can handle uncomfortable situationsSam says ‘human beings feel things which are unpleasant, but the programme teaches us how to handle it.’Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Pregnant with a sickness bug.. and stronger than ever! Emma's journey since overcoming Emetophobia.
Welcome to a very heartwarming episode! Ex-emetophobe Emma joins ex-emetophobe and Emetophobia-Free coach Michelle Johnson to talk all things pregnancy and sickness bugs. Since overcoming their fears, both Michelle and Emma have fallen pregnant AND experienced a sickness bug! Both women have an amazing story to tell and are here to tell you that no matter what you might currently believe, you can overcome your fear, experience being sick and still be wonderfully Emetophobia-Free! At the time of recording both Emma and Michelle were currently expecting, Emma at 33 weeks pregnant and Michelle at 22 weeks! Before the programme, Emma often asked herself whether she would cope with being pregnant, and her phobia was definitely a barrier to wanting to become a mum! The symptoms of pregnancy have shown their face for Emma, but rather than allowing her thoughts to take over, she has been able to gain perspective and manage her thinking! In her words ‘I’m not catastrophising anything, and I'm out the other side of Emetophobia’.Both Michelle and Emma have experienced a sickness bug during their current pregnancies. Emma describes the experience as unpleasant but processed it in a helpful way by recognising that it was a short episode of discomfort and not the end of the world! Emma remained calm because she accepted the event rather than catastrophising it. She realised that it was not as ‘traumatic’ as pre Emetophobia-Free Emma believed it to be!Emma recognised that once she understood Emetophobia, she didn’t create the panic because she accepted that she was going to be sick rather than trying to control/avoid it. Following the sickness episode, Emma asked herself ‘why have I been worried about this for so long?’ Emma has also been sick in public during her pregnancy. Pre Emetophobia-Free, Emma was petrified of what people would think of her if she was sick. Now, Emetophobia-free, she has learned that this was something she was projecting rather than a factual situation! I suffered with Emetophobia for almost 50 years - Now I’m cured!
Anne’s Emetophobia years: Anne experienced her Emetophobia for around 50 years before overcoming it.She used to believe her phobia began because a student was sick on her during a school assembly, which lead to her becoming ill herself. Anne’s belief became ‘if someone else is sick around me ill, be sick too’.Anne recognised how low her self-esteem really was, and how much she hid her phobia from others because she feared their judgement. Her phobia prevented her from pursuing a career as a primary school teacher, because the germs and school trips felt too overwhelming for her to handle. Now she is Emetophobia free, Anne recognises that she created nausea by feeling so anxious. This feeling followed Anne throughout her adulthood. Travel and Emetophobia:On Anne’s 50th birthday, when travelling to Paris, her daughter became ill at the airport. As a result, Anne almost completely withdrew from the trip. This was Anne’s final straw for wanting to overcome her Emetophobia.Anne began alternative therapy, but was aware she needed this to be Emetophobia specific. From here, she came across the Emetophobia-Free Programme!Emetophobia as a mother:Anne now recognises the fixation she had on her children’s wellbeing. She would often ask them how they felt, which she realised may have encouraged them to create anxiety about how they felt and potentially cause them to develop this phobia too.If a bug was going around, Anne became anxious, and her children’s father would need to handle the childcare which impacted how effective and confident she felt as a mother.Anne prevented herself from eating when her children were unwell.Anne spent a lot of time trying to hide her phobia from others. Despite this, it remained all consuming within Anne’s mind In Anne’s words, “don’t wait 50 years to get rid of your Emetophobia!”. No doctors could explain my daughter's constant nausea - they didn't know about Emetophobia.
When Annabel’s daughter Charlotte started to complain of regular stomach aches and nausea, as well as expressing difficulty remaining in the school environment, at around the age of 7, Mum Annabel was at a loss. Charlotte was taken to many doctors appointments, which involved blood tests and investigations. However, no medical procedure or professional was able to answer for what was going on for her! Charlotte would experience motion sickness, and struggled to eat food. When on holiday Charlotte would struggle in the airport and on any form of public transport and would only eat packaged foods and this meant the whole family were unable to eat out. Charlotte was also experiencing panic attacks believing she was going to be sick. As a parent who was unaware of her child’s phobia, Annabel was completely helpless to how she could help. Annabel knew deep down that something wasn’t right with Charlotte, however the answers remained completely unknown! At the age of 12, Charlotte began scratching her neck as a soothing mechanism. It was a this point that Annabel decided to contact a therapist regarding CBT.There was no improvement for Charlotte’s panic attacks following CBT, and as a result she was prescribed beta blockers. To the families disappointment, these did not help Charlotte. She still felt the same way. In 2022, a breakthrough was made. Charlotte herself discovered the term Emetophobia whilst googling her symptoms. At this point, Charlotte was 15 years old and had been struggling with her fear for 8 years! After realising what was wrong and finding specialist treatment with the Emetophobia-Free programme, Annabel finally had the answers she had been searching for and Charlotte was able to beat her Emetophobia. Charlotte is now loving her life, has passed her driving test, sat all of her exams and no longer suffers with the fears and worries that used to restrict her life so much. Annabel is so passionate about raising awareness for other parents out there who are at a loss with their child’s symptoms as she understands how hopeless and isolating it feel not to be able to help you child. Since witnessing the change in her daughter Annabel decided to train to become a coach to help other families in a similar situation to hers.Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. How I beat Emetophobia, built a career in healthcare and effectively manage my autoimmune disease.
As an occupational therapist, Hannah is faced with many people who are sick regularly. When she had Emetophobia, Hannah would escape these situations due to the fear she was creating. Hannah also experienced contamination OCD, IBS, trouble sleeping and continuous nausea which affected her all through her younger years. Hannah would sanitise her hands continuously and would inspect her food before eating it. Hannah began the Emetophobia Free coaching in summer, and was thriving by Autumn! The first time Hannah recognised her progress, she was doing an intense exercise class. This had caused her to feel nauseous, however she was able to prevent herself from panicking! From here, when affected with a stomach bug, Hannah didn’t let the anxiety control her, she just said ‘oh well’ and moved on! Now she is Emetophobia free, Hannah does not create anxiety when someone at work is physically ill. She knows that this is just another part of her day, and that she is able to control her feelings and reactions.Hannah developed an autoimmune disease after overcoming her Emetophobia and believes that the Emetophobia-Free Programme enabled her to handle the symptoms and overall life change of her autoimmune disease much more effectively than if she had the two co-existing.Hannah was able to independently find a meal plan than worked for her, and knew she would cope with the outcome regardless. Once she learned the skills she needed to cope, she was provided with the power to tackle any obstacles thrown her way including any gastro related symptoms. Hannah's experience was so life-changing that she trained to become a Thrive Programme Coach and is now helping others overcome their fear. Fearless Travel: Beat Emetophobia and Embrace the World!
Does your intense fear of vomit stop you from travelling? Ex-emetophobe Lauren Singer joins Michelle Johnson on the podcast to talk all things Emetophobia and travel.Lauren developed her Emetophobia from around 5 years old. Before the Emetophobia-Free Programme, when the topic of travel was raised Lauren thought “I would love to be able to do that!” but then her inner voice would begin asking what if XYZ happened, which would increase the pressure she felt to engage in the experience. Lauren's Emetophobia ruined a large number of trips for her. Despite her going, they were not what they could have been. Emetophobia caused Lauren to eat mainly ‘safe’ foods and during a trip to Spain another passenger informed Lauren that she had just overcome a stomach bug. This heightened her anxiety to such extremes, that she was offered an early exit from the trip.Lauren would also suffer from extreme anxiety when listening to other people’s experiences involving sickness and travel. Since the Emetophobia-Free programme, Lauren has booked a snorkelling holiday, where she didn't even consider the toilet situation because it didn’t matter. She knew she would cope regardless! Lauren is now able to be present in the moment and experiences genuine excitement before travelling. 3 top tips for travelling with Emetophobia:Gain perspective and look for evidence - Take the time to view the experience from a non-emetophobic perspective What thoughts do they have? What evidence do they have for their experience? Focus on the outcome and goal of what you’re trying to achieve.Use your imagination powerfully - Your imagination is a powerful tool.If you imagine a fearful experience, you’re priming yourself for the worst case scenario. You believe this is preparing you, but it isn't. Rehearse a positive experience and focus on how you would like this narrative to look. Build the belief you want to have about travel - Focus on building a belief in yourself that you can cope with uncertainty. Look for evidence of times that you have coped and managed with unexpected events. Ensure to process and celebrate your small steps. I have Autism and I beat Emetophobia - you can too!
Meg is keen to share her powerful message: 'Don't let your ASD diagnosis hold you back from tackling your biggest fear - you CAN beat Emetophobia!'Meg held a strong belief that she couldn’t overcome her Emetophobia because her ability to process information wasn't the same as neurotypical people. She had heard of the Emetophobia-Free programme but was skeptical about starting as she believed her ASD would hold her back. Another main reason that Meg put off her journey to becoming Emetophobia free, for 5 years, was her fear of failure. She had a strong belief that she would fail, and when paired with her perfectionism, she was resisting the opportunity incase she let herself down.Back story:Meg suffered with her Emetophobia and generalised anxiety for around 20 years. She worked with a psychotherapist for many years but her Emetophobia remained unchanged so she decided to start reading the Emetophobia-Free programme and from the moment she picked up the manual her phobia began making sense to her, which was the ‘most important’ part! Megs life post Emetophobia:The moment the Emetophobia-Free Programme clicked for Meg, was when she realised the absolute importance of gaining coping skills. By learning how to tolerate the uncomfortable, there was no longer any need for her to avoid situations of potential discomfort, because she could cope with it regardless. Meg now gets a ‘kick’ out of those uncertain situations because she knows she is powerful, in control and thriving! Meg’s previous belief that she would never get a job because of her Emetophobia is no longer there. She is now working in a primary school, which was a massive break through for Meg! She has since moved out of her family home into her own place, and her coping skills keep going from strength to strength! Meg has set up a cricket team of 25 women which she is running independently. She has even won an award and spoken publicly. Meg knew that seeing someone with ASD successfully beating their fear would have been invaluable for her when she was working through the programme and wants to be that voice of hope for other neurodivergent individuals! 5 top tips for parents supporting a child/teen through the Emetophobia-Free Programme
Caitriona’s daughter, Cara, started showing signs of Emetophobia when she was just 8 years old. After trying multiple different therapies they came across the Emetophobia-Free Programme.Caitriona got fully involved in her daughter's recovery, completing the programme alongside her so that she would support as much as possible. Caitriona was so blown away with the transformation in Cara she wanted to reach out to other parents currently supporting their child to offer advice and guidance on their journey to helping their young person overcome Emetophobia.5 top tips for parents supporting a child through the programme.1. Understand the Thrive Programme and how it worksUnderstanding the programme and how it works is vital. Cara’s whole family took the time to understand the programme fully and the skills were learned and applied by the whole family which enabled them to resonate with the entire process and model effectively for Cara.2. Reassure your child that they are not alone, and that they have your full supportEmetophobe’s often feel isolated as a result of their phobia. Reassure your child/teen that their phobia will get better, and that they will return to/create a 'normal' life once she overcame it. 3. Be patient and understandingEmetophobe’s are often perfectionists with a number of unhelpful thinking styles. Cara was continuously reassured by her parents that overcoming this phobia wouldn’t happen overnight. She was reminded that repetition and consistency was key. 4. Use the correct language Make sure the language you are using is empowering and not collusive e.g. ‘You know you’ll be okay, and you can cope even if you are sick!’ In Caitriona’s words, ’Learning the language was the one of most important parts of the programme’ 5. Praise your child and acknowledge their progress, reminding them that they have done this themselvesCara was consistently reminded of the effort she was putting in and the progress she had made. Her parents reminded Cara to process the positives, despite not necessarily feeling much achievement in herself. Every small step achieved by Cara was acknowledged by her parents, and they continue to do so to this day!Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. From panic attacks to hiking solo through Europe | Sophie's incredible recovery from Emetophobia!
In this weeks episode of the Emetophobia-Free podcast, Michelle and Sophie discuss her journey through the programme. Sophie contacted us as she wanted to talk about the part of the programme where you have almost overcome your fear but there are some final pieces of work to do - 'the last 10%' in her words. Sophie explains that when she was working through the programme herself she found messages from others on the podcasts/testimonials of being 100% over it a bit disheartening as she was not there herself and she wanted to be the voice she wished she was able to hear at that time. She wants to share the message that it is okay to not be 100% over it just yet because you know it's coming... if you keep taking the steps forward you will get there!Sophie’s Emetophobia began when she was around 7 years old, however her main memory is from when she was 14/15 years old. Her brother was sick in front of her, in a public setting. As a result of this, she ran into the nearest store to hide away from the event. Sophie was experiencing panic attacks, and finally recognised that this phobia was taking over her life. This is when she began looking into psychological interventions to help her, as she reached the point where it was ‘taking over her life’.Since completing the Emetophobia-Free programme, Sophie has been on a 3 week, solo travelling trip to Europe which was unimaginable previously. Sophie was able to trail 280k with only her backpack, no safety tools! Better even, she felt free and happy whilst doing so! On one occasion, Sophie proactively chose to order fish from the menu, despite experiencing a number of thoughts involving potentially being sick!Sophie now has the skills to stop herself from brooding and obsessing about the possibility of being sick. In her words ‘if it happens, it happens’ and she has achieved everything on her ‘what I want to do when I'm Emetophobia free’ list. In Sophie’s words, ‘this course is totally worth it, and the best decision I ever made’. Why dyslexia didn't hold me back from beating Emetophobia (the fear of vomit).
The Emetophobia-Free Programme was developed to be easy to understand and accessible by those with learning disabilities and/or neurodiversity. Coach Ruth speaks to Emma regarding her experience going through The Emetophobia-Free programme with dyslexia, and how being neurodivergent affected her understanding of the programme and processing of the new concepts contained within it.Like many with dyslexia, Emma reported having never read a book from start to finish before, but with guidance and coaching, not only were the concepts easy to grasp, but Ruth had the expert knowledge necessary to make the programme accessible, applicable, and specific to Emma’s life. This included the use of not only the Emetophobia-Free manual, but the videos , blog and podcast content that is available on the Emetophobia-Free website. It is the role of the Emetophobia-Free Coach to ensure that every chapter is understood by the client and is processed by them in a way that is meaningful to them. This ensures that clients with neurodivergence or processing issues are certain that they understand and can apply the contents of each chapter, before progressing to the next. This is what makes The Emetophobia-Free Programme so effective. The programme avoids long and convoluted explanations and instead focuses on the clients understanding. In this video, Emma explores the fact that both emetophobia and her dislike of reading stem from unhelpful beliefs regarding her ability to cope, and it was only once she confronted this, deconstructed these beliefs, and put the effort in to recreate helpful beliefs, that this was changed for the better. Not only was the programme highly accessible despite Emma’s dyslexia and neurodiversity, but the understanding she gained within the programme benefitted her due to her newfound confidence and developed skill set. This in turn boosted her self-esteem and self-belief and changed her life so much that she trained to become a Emetophobia-Free Coach herself.Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. 18 year old Gabbie beats a debilitating fear of vomit which ruled her life!
18-year-old Gabbie suffered from a debilitating fear of vomit that ruled her life. Her fear started after Gabbie and her brother caught the stomach flu around the age of 7 and gradually grew to the point that it was having a debilitating effect on her life. Gabbie would have panic attacks, struggle to eat, struggle to go to school, would spend days in bed feeling sick convinced she was going to vomit. Gabbie's parents tried to help her with various CBT interventions all through her childhood and teenage years. Gabbie even attended a week long inpatient programme specific to Emetophobia but nothing worked, her phobia remained intact. Gabbie's mum finally found the Emetophobia-Free programme online and after listening to a podcast episode 'saw clarity' for the first time and, with Gabbie's consent, signed her up for the course. After just a few weeks Gabbie explains she no longer had to rely on her parents’ reassurance that she was going to be okay, and she used the DREAM technique (a thought recognition technique described in the programme) to manage her emotions and cope in the moment.Gabbie explains that the Emetophobia-Free Programme was vastly different to all the CBT she had done because it taught her how her mind worked and gave her the tools fundamentally change her belief systems, thoughts and emotions rather than just learning to manage her uncomfortable emotions. She was finally able to not create the anxiety in the first place rather than just having to manage it on a daily basis. The Emetophobia-Free programme is first and foremost a training programme that teaches the teenager how their mind works. Once they understand what they are doing to (very inadvertently) create and maintain Emetophobia, they can follow a step-by-step programme and know exactly what they need to do to uncreate it!After completing the programme, Gabbie explains that she was able to not only attend her school residential trip, but also easily tolerate her classmate getting sick in the car with her. She also explains that she is now confident in her friendships and has all the skills she needs to create a content and happy life for herself, Emetophobia-Free!Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. I struggle to eat because it might make me vomit! Why Emetophobia can lead to a restricted diet.
In this Episode of the Emetophobia-Free podcast, Michelle speaks to Sam who is an ex-emetophobe as well as a Thrive Coach in the United States. The topic today is food, and how an emetophobe’s relationship with food can be very problematic. Sam starts off by explaining that because she struggled to eat as a child due to the fear of vomiting, she was deemed ‘failure to thrive’ and was underweight and malnourished. Although she had a group of safety foods, she ‘could’ eat, they were not nutritionally dense enough to provide for her body.Sam describes it akin to a vicious cycle, where she needed food to survive, however, each time she ate she was creating a lot of anxiety around it and perceiving it as a threat to herself. She worried constantly about whether the food was going to make her vomit and consequently grazed on ‘safe’ foods that kept hunger at bay but was not enough to nourish her.Michelle has a similar experience with food and shared that even safe foods could become quickly ‘unsafe’ if exposed to certain conditions. One example Michelle gave was when making oven chips (a food on her 'safe' list) there was an unpleasant smells of fertiliser coming from the surrounding fields so she had to throw them all away incase they made her sick.Although improving Sam’s relationship with food and her nutritional wellness was an important goal, both Michelle and Sam advocate for not using food as a barometer with regard to the Emetophobia-Free journey, instead using feeling calmer, more relaxed, less anxiety and the processing of these emotions, as the barometer of success within the programme. Accepting that if you are feeling overall less stressed, more relaxed and less anxious then the food will come. i.e., it’s great to have specific foods as goals, to be eaten, however, the overall success of the programme actually relies on a generalised understanding of the thought patterns before, during and after eating.Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Amazing 10-Year-Old Summer Beats Emetophobia!
The wonderful 10 year old Summer has just completed the Emetophobia-Free programme and is now completely over her fear of being sick! Summer was supported on her journey by her mum Susan and they have both kindly taken the time to join us on the podcast to share their experience. Susan describes how difficult life was as a family when Summer was suffering from Emetophobia. Summer started to show symptoms around the age of 5 when she wasn’t keen to be in the car, was openly scared of the idea of being sick herself and would become visibly distressed when others around her were sick. Summer’s symptoms escalated to the point where she was lashing out, self-harming, wearing sick bands daily, running away from school, struggling to leave the house and get through normal day to day activities. After trying lots of different interventions with little success, Summer and Susan both fully committed to the children’s Emetophobia-free programme (in which the parent works through the adult manual alongside their child) and in just 15 weeks Summer has gone from battling through each day to being Emetophobia-Free and loving her life!Susan describes how she was initially doubtful and didn’t believe the programme could work but is now 'eating her words’ as she finally has her little girl back.Susan and Summer both worked incredibly hard to get to where they are now and wanted to join us on the podcast to encourage any other families struggling with this phobia to reach out and get the help they need.Susan: ‘In one word the programme is amazing…. it really is life-changing.’Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Overcoming Emetophobia: Why work with a Licensed Thrive Programme Coach?
Fiona Brown, one of the longest standing Thrive Programme coaches joins Michelle Johnson on the podcast this week to talk about the Emetophobia-Free coaching programme.Key questions:What does the coaching programme look like? The coaching programme is 6-8 weeks in length followed by a back-up session 6 weeks after the sessions are completed. Each session is between 60 and 90 minutes. What does the coaching programme feel like? The sessions are unlike traditional therapy. They are chatty and relaxed and the client should come away feeling motivated & empowered. There is no going over past events or dragging up painful or difficult past memories. The sessions are entirely forward facing and focused on what you are doing in the here and now to create and maintain your fear so that you can make changes moving forward. What are the benefits of the coaching programme compared to doing the programme by yourself?1.It is more predictable as the coach can ensure you can find and place the pieces of the puzzle correctly.2.The coach helps you gain perspective. Sometimes it can be difficult to see things from a different angle when you have only ever thought about it in a scary, terrifying way. 3.The coach keeps you accountable. They will work hard with you to keep you focused, motivated and on track and let you know if you are not putting in the effort needed to get yourself over your fear. 4.The coach gets how HUGE overcoming Emetophobia is. The coach is there to share your wins and celebrate successes that other people may not appreciate. What if I can't afford the coaching programme?Ultimately the programme is an investment in you and your life Emetophobia-Free. What would you say a life without your Emetophobia is worth? The cost of the coaching programme is less than the cost of the latest iPhone and most coaches offer payment plans so you can pay in a way that suits you.Does it matter who I go through the programme with? The short answer is no. It doesn’t matter who you go through the programme with as long as you build a good relationship with that person and feel able to talk openly with them. My 5 Year Journey to Recovery: Finally Emetophobia-Free!
Bloss’s journey to Emetophobia-Free wasn’t a quick one. It took Bloss years of re-reading the manual and applying the skills to get where she is today. Bloss explains that she put more effort into overcoming her fear than she did to anything she did at school! She read the book up to 5 times, made lots of notes and posters that she stuck up around her house, had a reminder that popped up on her phone each hour to remind her to check in with her thoughts and she listened to all the videos and podcasts on the go as often as she could. Bloss really immersed herself in the world of Emetophobia-Free and stayed determined that one day she would be over her fear. That day came earlier this year when she reached out to us on social media and asked if she could help to spread the word about Emetophobia-Free as she was finally over her fear and the programme had totally changed her life.Bloss had suffered with an overwhelming fear of being sick since the age of 9. She went through the Emetophobia-Free programme in 2018 and after working incredibly hard is now proud to say she has cured herself of her fear! Bloss has recently got married and her husband was sick twice in the week after their wedding. Bloss described her reaction to this and the stark difference to what it was like when others were ill around her when she has Emetophobia. Bloss’s advise is to persevere “Don’t give up on it, it’s not worth living with Emetophobia for life!”Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Emetophobia, Anxiety & Depression - I overcame them all!
Lisanne Prooij suffered with Emetophobia, anxiety and depression and has joined us on the Emetophobia-Free podcast to share her unique and insightful story. Lisanne is now over all of her mental health symptoms and passionate about helping others.Lisanne’s shares her experience of overcoming Emetophobia whilst still believing that she was suffering with it. The podcast highlights the importance of the story that you tell yourself when you are working to overcome your phobia and how a perfectionist thinking style plays a bit part in keeping you stuck. Lisanne’s message to anyone struggling with Emetophobia, anxiety or depression (or any other mental health symptom) is to focus on creating good mental health in all areas of life not just zoning in on your specific symptoms. Learning to thrive is the easiest way to feel powerful and get yourself over any mental health symptom including Emetophobia. The podcast also covers why thriving isn’t just being happy all of the time. Inevitably in life there are difficult and sometimes traumatic events that happen and thriving is having the belief in yourself that you can cope with and get through those difficult times. It is not believing that you will feel great and happy all of the time - no toxic positivity here please!Going through the Thrive Programme was so life-changing for Lisanne that she trained to become a Thrive Programme Coach and is now fully qualified and helping others to overcome their mental health issues. Bella Ramsey: Raw and real insight into living with and overcoming Emetophobia!
BAFTA winning actor Bella Ramsey has starred in over 30 films and series and in the last 12 months alone has been nominated for around 65 awards. Despite a jam-packed schedule, Bella has been kind enough to find time to join us on the Emetophobia-Free podcast to help those who are suffering with this debilitating fear not to lose hope and to seek help. Emetophobia is the pathological fear of being sick or seeing other people be sick. Bella suffered with this terrifying fear from a very young age. At one stage Bella was unable to leave the house. ‘I felt like even the air around me was a threat’ recalls Bella. Like many Emetophobia sufferers, Bella endured panic attacks and would take travel sickness tablets and antacids when having to travel for work. “It impacted pretty much every area of my life…I would be very conscious about what food I would eat on set, worried about if there was a bug going around and who looked ill and who didn’t.”Bella tried self-help books, CBT and hypnotherapy to overcome the fear, all of which were ineffective. Bella is now completely over Emetophobia after going through The Thrive Programme for Emetophobia (also known as Emetophobia-Free). “It’s not controlling my life anymore… I don’t think about sick and I’m not scared…I don’t have any limits on me anymore in terms of what I can and can’t do depending on this phobia”. Bella understands the skepticism of those suffering with Emetophobia, especially those who have tried to overcome the fear previously. ‘If I was talking to myself back when I was 14 and couldn’t leave my house I’d be like “Yeah no way, that’s definitely not a thing”, but it is! The Thrive Programme teaches you how your mind works. You’re the one actually doing all the work. It’s not this thing that’s like a miracle cure. It’s actually you doing all the work. So if you really put your all into it there’s no way it can’t work… There is something that can help you… don’t feel like your life is over because it’s really not.’A huge thank you to Bella for taking the time to share their story with us on the Emetophobia-Free podcast! 5 TOP TIPS - How to support someone with Emetophobia
This week Michelle Johnson is joined by Bree Billington (ex-emetophobe and Emetophobia-Free Programme Coach) and her girlfriend Sy. Sy was Bree’s significant other on her journey to overcoming her fear. A ‘significant other’ is any person who is important to an individual's life or wellbeing. Significant others are usually someone’s spouse, best friend, or parent. In this brilliant episode, Sy and Bree give tangible, real-life examples of how to be a supportive ‘significant other’ and discuss 5 top tips for supporting Someone with Emetophobia. 5 TOP TIPS1. Don’t collude. Colluding is when you are unintentionally agreeing with your loved one about their phobia. It can look like them saying “I’m so terrified of being sick, it’s the worst thing in the world’ and you replying with, ‘ I am so sorry you’re frightened, being sick is awful’. It could also look like helping them avoid situations for example, ‘Don’t worry, you don’t have to come to dinner tonight, I know that would be too much for you to handle’. You want to be loving supportive but without buying into their belief system. So, for the above example, you could say something like ‘I know you are really suffering at the moment, but you are going to beat this thing. Remember that this thing isn’t happening to you, all we need to do is help train you out of it’.2. Help them gain perspective. Emetophobia sufferers tend to catastrophise, lose perspective and create a lot of panic and anxiety. A great way to help is to enable them to think things through in a logical, rational way or gain perspective. For example, if they are creating anxiety about going out for dinner, discuss why people go out to eat in the first place and how unlikely it is that they will be ill from going out. 3. Help them build coping skillsEmetophobia is actually nothing to do with being sick. It is all about tolerating uncomfortable emotions. In order to believe that your loved one can tolerate discomfort and uncertainty, it is important they step outside their comfort zone. One way to do this is to start a new hobby! As a significant other, you could step outside their comfort zone with them! 4. Know when to challenge and when to distractIf your loved on is panicking or too highly anxious they are unlikely to be able to process the logical, rational things that you are saying and your words won’t help. Instead offer comfort and support. You could bFind out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Conquering Emetophobia: How Megan Overcame a Lifetime of Fear | Inspiring Podcast Episode
Megan's StoryMegan started suffering from Emetophobia around the age of 11. Megan’s Grandmother had just passed away and it was the first time that Megan remembered seeing her mum vulnerable.Around that time Megan remembers being on school bus, beginning to feel sick and having a panic attack. It was after these two events that Megan remembers really being affected by her Emetophobia. Megan starting refusing to go to school and was afraid of being anywhere that she was closed in and couldn’t leave on her own free will. As Megan continued to grow she found her life was more and more strategically planned around being sick. If she was invited to anything she would run through an internal checklist of questions including ‘Who is going to be there? When can I leave? Where are the exits? Do I have my own car?’. She also created a ‘safe zone’ which meant that her world was limited to travelling no further than 15 minutes away from her home. Megan started therapy when she was 16 and was diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder and a number of other disorders but never Emetophobia. Megan became really disheartened, believing she was the only person with this phobia but she really wanted to become a mother so she kept searching for something that could help her. What was Megan’s biggest win?Whilst going through the programme Megan was in a restaurant when a gentleman who was also dining there had a seizure and was sick. Instead of leaving immediately and panicking, Megan found herself running towards him and asking ‘What can I do to help?’ Megan reflects on her thoughts at the time which included ‘Who am I? How is this happening?’ She had put so much effort into the Emetophobia-Free programme and was feeling so powerful she was able to manage difficult situations like this because she had the skills to do so. She was able to regulate her own emotions and began to get curious about how far she could go. Megan's Life Emetophobia-FreeMegan now goes on long car journeys and recently she found herself working on her phone, texting on a windy road in the backseat of a car and the fact she was doing so didn’t even register. She had starting doing it without thinking. She has even been on a ride at Universal Studios that has a room to be sick in afterwards and she went on it!“I don’t have any limitations. Terrified of morning sickness? Pregnancy and Emetophobia uncovered!
In this brilliant episode, Michelle Johnson and Bree Billington have an open, candid and genuine discussion about pregnancy and Emetophobia. Michelle and Bree are both ex-emetophobes, both parents and both working to help other people overcome their fear of sickness and vomit. The episode does contain reference to sensitive topics including miscarriages and abortion. Michelle and Bree share their different experiences of pregnancy in a very raw and open way. Michelle was Emetophobia-Free during her pregnancy, Bree still had her Emetophobia. The podcast begins with the common question ‘How could someone with Emetophobia consider getting pregnant in the first place?’. Bree dives straight in with a brilliant insight into how her high desire for control and the power of her beliefs all played a role in her decision to fall pregnant whilst suffering with Emetophobia. The discussion then moves onto how desire for control, low self-esteem, social anxiety and unhelpful thinking styles all factor into how well you manage the different parts of pregnancy i.e. the changes in your body, hormones, morning sickness, doctor’s appointments, not telling anyone about your pregnancy for the first 12 weeks, birth plans, listening to the opinions of others and the pressure we put on ourselves as future parents to get everything right. The podcast ends with some active ways to prepare yourself for the discomforts of pregnancy with a few challenges you can try at home. Michelle and Bree will be back soon with another podcast about birth, postpartum and motherhood. Emetophobia: Why it's NOT about your past.
Your Emetophobia is NOT caused by past events. Most people believe that what has happened in their past has a massive impact upon their future. Most therapuetic interventions such as counselling, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, hypnotherapy, analytical therapy are all focused on going back and revisiting past experiences, memories, and rehashing them. What is REALLY important to understand is that the notion that we store trauma/memories/emotions and that they live inside our minds unresolved is NOT true. The narrative is actually not only inaccurate but incredibly disempowering. One of the most common areas in which people give their power away is to believe that their past is driving or dictating how they experience their present. How it feels:We experience a traumatic event. We store the memory/trauma/emotions of that event at that time. Those things are then locked away in our mind. The memory/trauma/emotion can then be triggered at any time by things around us and we can’t do anything about it.Example. I was sick when I was younger. The memory and feelings of panic and terror that I created during that time were stored in my brain. Now whenever I feel slightly nauseous, or perceive that something could make me ill, that memory and all those awful feelings come flooding back and there is nothing I can do about it. What is actually going on:Our brains do not store whole memories anywhere. We only store between 5-10% of an experience.Cognitive neuroscience research has found that memory is an active process that involves interpretation and construction at all stages (Oschner & Schacter., 2000). The research also shows that we do not store emotions anywhere in our body. Any emotion that we feel, we have just created in the here and now, brand new each time. These findings are incredibly important. If we don’t store memories or emotions, then they can’t be locked away ready to terrorise us at any moment. The BELIEF that we have created about being sick or that traumatic event IS present and that can be worked on and changed. You are not at the mercy of your past events, experiences or traumas. You can change how you view past events and overcome your Emetophobia for good.Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. This week Michelle Johnson is joined by Bree Billington who overcame her debilitating fear of being sick by reading the Emetophobia-Free manual is just TWO WEEKS!! In this brilliant episode Scientist Bree explains that she developed Emetophobia around the age of 7 after what witnessing a traumatic incident. Bree believed that because she had witnessed the event at a young age, there was nothing she could do to get rid of her Emetophobia and she was stuck with it for life. She didn’t allow other people to cook for her and didn’t want to be around friends incase they were sick. Once she was working she started having panic attacks as she as afraid either herself or her co-workers were going to be sick. Bree actually got into University to become a teacher but ended up dropping out as she was so scared of children being sick.Bree now works as a Scientist in Pathology. Five years on and still Emetophobia-Free! Millie shares her story!
Millie is now 5 years on from beating her Emetophobia, she has been sick since overcoming it and is here to give us all an update on what her life is like Emetophobia-Free. Millie recorded her first video just 5 weeks into the programme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXAnMGtUiBYIn this podcast episode, Millie explains that throughout the programme she experienced blips and dips. She found it difficult in parts and had to put in a lot of effort to find comfort in the discomfort. For example, the first time she decided to drink alcohol or eat fish, she created anxiety and felt uncomfortable. However, she knew that she wanted to be able to do those things long term so learning to tolerate that anxiety was essential. Now, she is able to do those things with no anxiety whatsoever! Millie describes her journey thorough the programme as more of a marathon than a sprint. Millie then recorded another testimonial video at the end of The Thrive Programme when she had fully overcome her Emetophobia.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01s1eNVHpTYIn the last 5 years Millie has continued to Thrive and has recently started travelling. She has enjoyed exploring Europe, sometimes very spontaneously which she certainly wouldn’t have been able to do pre-Thrive. One example, Millie gives is that her friend called her on a Sunday and said ‘Let’s go to Ibiza’ and by the Tuesday morning they were on the plane! She has continued to try new foods and is able to minimise any stress or anxiety when faced with the challenges of day to day life. Millie is full of energy, adventure and a zest for life and is a total inspiration to other young people out there wanting to live a life Emetophobia-Free!Huge thank you to Millie for documenting her journey through The Thrive Programme and her life beyond!Millie overcome her Emetophobia with The Thrive Programme and you can too!Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. My 9 year old son was terrified of being sick. Now he is Emetophobia-Free!
The lovely Loretta talks openly and honestly about her journey through The Thrive Programme which she embarked upon to help her son overcome his fear of being sick/vomiting. Nine year old Sonny was struggling with Emetophobia and had lots of anxiety around being sick. Before the programme Sonny was struggling to eat certain foods, was scared to go to sleep without travel sickness bands, couldn’t sleep without his parents in the room, struggled to travel in the car and would constantly seek reassurance that he wasn't going to be sick. Loretta was desperate to find something that would help as she was at a loss with how to help him. After just 3 weeks of starting the programme, Loretta started to see improvements and now after only 11 weeks, Sonny is eating happily, doing all the things he used to love doing like going to the football with his Dad, sleeping in his own room (without sickness bands) and generally enjoying his life! He can now even watch the eating challenge on ‘I'm a Celebrity’ and is living his life without the constant fear and anxiety that he is going to be sick. He is Emetophobia-Free!Loretta speaks directly to any parents who are considering going through the programme and says ‘Just do The Thrive Programme!’. Loretta explains that even though the programme was centred around Sonny, she has learnt so many things herself. Not only does she now know how best to support Sonny as he grows and develops but also she now has the skills to create a great life for herself! In the past few weeks Loretta & Sonny have been abroad after many years of avoiding flying due to Loretta’s anxiety. The course has been completely life changing for the whole family and Loretta’s candid and honest account of their journey through is well worth a listen!Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Why your Emetophobia isn't caused by a traumatic event in the past.
Do you spend hours a day trying to understand your phobia? Where did it come from? When did it start? It's understandable that when you are searching for answers you would look back to find an event in your past which may have 'triggered' your phobia. Perhaps you developed your fear after a sickness bug, food poisoning or another unpleasant incident. However, it is important to understand that even if you did begin to create your phobia after a certain event, the event itself was not the cause of your phobia. The cause of your phobia is nothing external, it is an internal thing. You phobia is created by your your thinking styles, your limiting beliefs and how you process those external events.Lots of people get sickness bugs or have really unpleasant experiences to do with sickness but not everyone creates Emetophobia. Believing that traumatic experience caused your phobia is a particularly disempowering belief and can lead you to believe that you are stuck with your phobia as you can't change the past. Lucy: My journey to Emetophobia Free!
This week Michelle Johnson is joined by the lovely Lucy in the first of our 'Real life' podcast series. In this series we are inviting people who are currently going through or have already completed The Thrive Programme for Emetophobia to talk openly and candidly about their experiences of life before, during and after the programme. Lucy had suffered with Emetophobia since around the age of 9 or 10 and (only 3 months since starting the programme!) is now living life Emetophobia Free! Lucy explains before the programme she was living in a constant state of anxiety and dread everyday due to her Emetophobia. She was always feeling nauseas and found that when she was with other people she would retreat into herself and was unable to stay present and enjoy their company due to her constant worries. Lucy explains that she had known about The Thrive Programme for a few years but believed that she stuck with her Emetophobia, that it was part of her and that she couldn't change it. Lucy tried lots of different therapies to overcome it and it was her partner who eventually bought her the manual to help her overcome her fear. Lucy explains that the main difference between The Thrive Programme and all the other treatments she had tried was that by going through the programme she finally understood what was going on in her own mind. She was able to learn how her own mind worked, how she was creating the anxiety and the nausea and then put in effort to change it. Lucy explains that all the other treatments she had tried before just tried to mask it or deal with the symptoms without addressing the root of the problem.Whilst going through the programme, Lucy put in consistent effort everyday and kept her goal of overcoming her fear at the forefront of her mind throughout. Examples of the effort she put in included setting a daily intention, working through the manual, not beating herself up when she didn't do as much as she wanted or respond in the way she wanted to and setting herself small achievable challenges.Lucy is now able to go out to restaurants, she enjoys eating chicken, infact it is now one of her favourite meals! She describes how she no longer has to stand over her partner and watch how he is cooking the chicken, she doesn't over cook it or take control of making sure the chopping board is clean. She is finally able to relax and enjoy life without the constant worry.Enjoy listenFind out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Why do Emetophobes often struggle to recognise their own achievements?
Joe is back for this week’s podcast, where he and Rob discuss why emetophobes struggle to recognise their achievements when working to overcome emetophobia. Why is this?Partners, friends and family often notice the huge improvements an emetophobe makes, but the emetophobe themself struggles to see this. This is mainly due to the perfectionist mentality, typical of emetophobes, where small successes are diminished and perceived ‘failings’ are focused on at the expense of any achievements. 👉 The ‘Should’ Mentality: Emetophobes frequently hold themselves to an unrealistic standard. They may feel that they 'should' be able to do things that they currently find challenging. This self-imposed pressure often leads to a sense of contempt towards oneself, making it difficult to appreciate incremental steps forward. If you’re scared to eat in new places, going to a cafe with your friends would be a HUGE achievement. But an emetophobe will tend to minimise this achievement, comparing themselves to others and thinking ‘well I should be able to go to a cafe anyway’. Gaining perspective and challenging this hyper-critical thinking is essential to overcoming your phobia - you can’t beat this phobia without learning self-compassion.👉 Downplaying Achievements: Often, achievements that signify progress seem too small to mention. For example, if you feel anxiety when leaving the house, walking to the end of the street would be a huge deal. This tendency to downplay successes can stem from a desire for massive breakthroughs rather than acknowledging the smaller, yet equally important, victories. If I jumped off the highest diving board the first time I went swimming, I’d probably lose my cool and never want to go swimming again! But if I gradually built myself up to jump off lower boards, by the time I made it the highest it would be easy. Overcoming emetophobia requires a delicate balance of taking safe, slow, and predictable steps. Each step forward, no matter how slight, contributes to the overall progress, and recognising them is key.How to tackle this mentality:👉 Be Your Own Best Friend: If emetophobes treated themselves with the same kindness and encouragement they would offer to a friend or child, they would likely see their achievements in a different light. Instead of focusing on what hasn't been accomplished, celebrate what has been achieved - big or small. Record each small step (on a big piece of paFind out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Why do Emetophobes FEEL more ill than other people?
How many times have you felt nauseous but not actually been sick? 100 times? 200, 300, 500 times? Every single day of your life?? Research indicates emetophobes tend to feel more ill than the average person. You may have noticed this yourself, you may have even had tests or been diagnosed with gut issues such as IBS. While this may seem scary, the truth is that 99% of the time the daily nausea experienced by emetophobes is a physical side-effect of anxiety. Plenty of research demonstrates the power of the brain-body connection: from as basic as an inaproppriate thought causing the blood vessels in your cheeks to dilate (also known as blushing – we’ve all been there!) to anxiety causing symptoms such as IBS, gut issues, acid reflux, exhaustion and more. When Michelle was younger she had the stomach flu. For about a year after, she experienced daily nausea, IBS symptoms and diarrhoea. She went to the doctor multiple times for blood tests, endoscopies and scans to work out what was going on. After a year of tests drawing no results, the doctor told her the symptoms were likely caused by anxiety. It was shocking to hear, and one that she didn’t want to accept, but also showed how powerful her anxiety and her mind was - something which she realised she could re-gain control over in order to beat her fears.👉 The Nausea-Anxiety Loop Emetophobes tend to be high-achieving, bright individuals who have high degrees of perfectionism and a need to be in control. While this is fantastic in many areas of life, it is extremely unhelpful when related to emetophobia. It means that, without realising it, the majority of the time they are worrying about being sick. This constant state of apprehension keeps them hyper-aware of any sensation that could remotely suggest they might become ill, only causing further anxiety and trapping them in a loop of persistent nausea.👉 The Impact on Daily LifeThis relentless worry not only affects their mental well-being but also gives rise to a range of physical symptoms. These can include acid reflux, IBS-like symptoms, digestive issues, and chronic nausea. It's important to note that these symptoms are unrelated to actual sickness and are instead created by the individual's anxious state and a misinterpretation of bodily sensations. This ironic twist exacerbates the challenges faced by emetophobes, making it an extremely difficult phobia to live with.👉 The Power of EmotionsFind out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. My Child is Having a Panic Attack - How Can I Help Them?
Children with emetophobia often experience panic attacks due to their phobia. As a parent, it can be worrying seeing your child go through such intense distress, and you may feel like whatever you do is futile. In this week’s podcast, Rob and Michelle, who was a primary school teacher and assistant headteacher for many years and is now a Thrive Programme Coach, discuss steps you can do when your child with emetophobia experiences a panic attack. Understanding Panic Attacks and EmetophobiaPanic attacks are intense episodes of anxiety characterised by physical and psychological symptoms. For individuals with emetophobia, these attacks are almost always related to a belief they’re going to be sick. What causes panic attacks and how can you prevent them? The biggest misbelief is that panic attacks come out of nowhere and happen TO you, which only leads people to find them more terrifying. In actual fact people inadvertently ‘create’ panic attacks due to several factors: lack of coping skills, poor emotional management, a perceived threat and tunnel vision, all of which Michelle and Rob discuss in this podcast.5 Steps to help your child with a panic attackHere are Rob and Michelle’s practical tips for managing a child when they’re having a panic attack:1. Be a Calming Presence: When your child experiences a panic attack, it's crucial to remain calm. If you're feeling stressed or anxious, it will only exacerbate their panic. This can be hard to do - especially if they’re afraid of going to school and you’re going to be late for work, but the best thing you can do is stay calm. Imagine you’re on a bumpy flight and start to feel a little anxious - as soon as you see the flight attendants are calm you immediately feel calmer. 2. Avoid Invalidating Their Feelings: It’s easy to feel stressed and express that by being cross with your child, but telling them off will only make things worse. Avoid saying things like "you're being silly" or "it's not real." While the threat is indeed perceived and not real (they WOULD cope if they were sick), it's essential not to invalidate their feelings.3. Help them calm down: help them take deep breaths, suggest going outside in the garden or for a walk, or tell them a joke to distract them and make them laugh - for example, ‘oh look I did a silly thing I put my jumper on the wrong way,’ which momentarily distracts them from their panic.Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.orghttps://linktr.ee/emetophobiaConnect with us at the links below:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafreeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :)------------------------Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both.
