Making Mom Friends, One Hello at a Time
Send us Fan MailThat question people toss out so casually, “Are you having another?”, can land like a weight on your chest. We go on what it’s like to build a village when you don’t have a built-in one. I share some of my experiences when I have walked into rooms where other moms already had their people, their history, and their easy conversations, while I stood there trying to find a way in. We talk honestly about mom loneliness, the pain of being brushed off, and why that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. Community takes time, repetition, and courage, especially for moms with one child who don’t always see their experience reflected back. You’ll also get a practical tool you can use today: the FORM method (Family, Occupation, Recreation, Motherhood). It’s a simple way to start real conversations without forcing anything. We connect it back to only child parenting and how our kids build their own friendship “pockets” over time, plus the lesson I want my daughter to carry: like and love yourself first as a friend. If you’ve been craving connection, take this episode with you on a walk or in the pickup line. Field Trip Details That Save Your Day
Send us Fan MailThe fastest way to ruin a great field trip is to leave the “small stuff” to chance. Bathrooms, parking, payment rules, group size, refunds, and timing sound boring until you are standing at the door with kids who suddenly need to pee and a host who was not ready for your crew. I want you to walk into your next outing calm, prepared, and ready to have fun. We dig into Phase 2 of my Jump Start Field Trip Guide and break down the exact questions to ask a store manager, staff member, or organization before you book. You will hear how to introduce your group as hands-on parents learning alongside our kids, why that one sentence creates a better experience for everyone, and how to pick a group size that actually works for elementary kids. We also cover practical field trip planning tips like discounts, best visiting hours, stroller and space limits, emergency restroom access, and which payment methods to confirm ahead of time. If making the call feels intimidating, I share how a simple host script can take away the pressure so you do not have to think on the spot. We also talk about money boundaries like collecting payment up front and asking about the cancellation policy so you are not stuck paying for no-shows. This is all about building a village and creating joyful only child activities through simple, repeatable community outings. Subscribe for more only child parenting support, share this with a mom friend who loves planning adventures, and leave a quick review so more families can find the show. Start Small, Connect More
Send us Fan MailLoneliness can sneak up on you as a stay-at-home mom, especially when your friends’ kids are older and your whole day still revolves around naps, snacks, and toddler moods. I share what helped me move out of that in-between space: building a small, positive community by starting with simple activities I already enjoy with my only child, then inviting one or two moms to join us. No big events, no complicated plans, and no pressure to “host perfectly.” We walk through real, practical ideas you can copy right away, including a one-hour playdate built around homemade play-doh and an easy craft like rock painting. I explain how we kept it age-appropriate, low-cost, and collaborative by sharing supplies, keeping the group small, and choosing a space that works for little kids. What If Homework Is Really About The Heart
Send us Fan MailHomework can show up at the worst possible time, right when everyone is tired and you can finally see bedtime. I’m Ruth, and I’m letting you into what homework really looks like in our only-child home: the after-school car check-in, the moments I’m trying not to yell, and the way one worksheet can flip the mood of an entire evening. Our schedule has a wildcard, the barn. We drive 40 minutes to an hour each way so my nine-year-old can ride her pony Lola, and that commute changes everything. Sometimes I’m not browsing cute school folders, I’m in the car with a pillow and blanket trying to grab a nap. Add in showers, hay dust, dinner that might be a restaurant or might be McDonald’s, and you can see why homework feels like a tiny boss battle that appears out of nowhere. I also share why it often goes smoother with her dad in the car, and what happens on the rare nights homework gets “forgotten.”Along the way, I read thoughts from other moms and reflect on what homework has taught me: how my daughter thinks, why teaching the “why” matters, and why knowing something doesn’t always mean you can teach it. We talk about taking breaks when emotions spike, finding each parent’s strengths, and building a teachable heart in our kids and in ourselves. If you enjoyed this, subscribe, share it with a fellow parent, and leave a review so more moms can find the show. Raising An Only Child At 50
Send us Fan MailEver sit in a room where everyone’s milestones feel a mile ahead of yours? That’s where our story opens: friends swapping grandbaby cuddles and wedding plans while we’re checking a third-grade backpack and learning the newest dance challenge with sore shoulders and a full heart. It’s a moment that could spiral into comparison, or bloom into clarity about what really matters. We talk candidly about raising an only child as we approach 50, managing fatigue, and choosing presence over performance when our bodies and calendars have limits. You’ll hear the funny, humbling saga of nailing a mom–daughter shoulder lift after days of practice, plus why pacing ourselves is not quitting, it’s protecting the joy. We share how tiny adventures become big memories: YouTube-fueled food hunts, rating MrBeast chocolate, and turning everyday errands into a sensory playground.Beneath the stories runs a steady theme: your timeline isn’t a mistake. If you’re craving a gentler pace, stronger bonds, and permission to love the season you’re actually in, this is your sign. Claiming The Role Model Spot
Send us Fan MailThis is Episode 3 of Season 4, and it begins with a moment I didn’t expect. A single comment from my husband at a celebrity meet-and-greet lit a fuse in my heart: Who gets to inspire our kids first? What started as a simple family outing opened into a deeper reflection on my identity as a newly minted mom to a three‑and‑a‑half‑year‑old, the power of language, and the fierce love that sits inside a parent. I share why that word “inspiration” mattered so much to me, and how I’m learning to live that out as a mom with an only child.Press play, share this episode with a parent who needs encouragement, and tell us: What words or moments opened a heart‑to‑heart in your family? I Thought She’d Always Hold My Hand

She Found My Hoodies, And I Found a Moment I Didn’t Expect
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of The Family of One, I talk about something I didn’t think I’d experience at this stage of parenting: my 8-year-old daughter finding two of my comfiest hoodies and wearing them like they were made for her.I’m 49 years young, a generous size, and honestly thought we’d be sharing hair clips and scarves, not actual clothes. But there she was, cozy and confident in my hoodies, and I was unexpectedly emotional about it.It reminded me that some parenting moments arrive quietly, wrapped in softness and surprise.🎧 Tune in for a warm reflection, a few laughs (yes, I said I was 59 at the start, oops!), and a gentle reminder that it’s never too late for sweet surprises.Support the showLoved this Family of One episode? Debunking Myths: Only Children Aren't Always Shy!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to Episode 27 of "Love in Focus: Building Community with an Only Child!" Today, I'm sharing a lively conversation I had with a coworker who has multiple kids. And hey, let's be real—everyone has their shy moments when they out of their comfort zone. Like, if you asked me to sing in front of a crowd, I'd definitely feel shy, especially trying to hit those.
