NASCAR Throwback Weekend, Kimi's F1 Win & The Grand Prix of Arlington | Flag to Flag Podcast
We're back with a loaded episode this week. John recaps his trip to the inaugural Grand Prix of Arlington, the facilities, the racing, the vibes, and we get into whether IndyCar should branch out to more street circuits and which cities deserve a race. We go back and forth on NASCAR and IndyCar doubleheaders and what actually works from a logistics standpoint. On the F1 side, we react to Kimi Antonelli picking up his first career win in China (and the announcer calling him Kimi Raikkonen on the podium), the Bahrain and Saudi GP getting canceled, McLaren's power unit nightmare, and Fernando Alonso literally losing feeling in his hands from the car vibrations. We also dig into whether Mercedes is heading toward another Silver War situation and whether Toto will let his drivers actually race each other. We get into a bigger conversation about what Formula One is really selling, is it a race or a status symbol? Chad hops on the soapbox for that one and John puts his marketing hat on to break down why it actually makes sense from a branding perspective, even if it frustrates the hardcore fans.the NASCAR side, we talk Denny Hamlin's strategy win in Vegas, the Chastain and Suarez situation that's apparently been brewing for a while, and whether throwback weekend deserves a proper comeback. We share our favorite schemes of the weekend and then lock in our Darlington picks, and somehow we both landed on Chase Briscoe without talking about it beforehand.Plus the local racing report from Tucson Speedway, Dale Jr. making laps at Nashville Fairgrounds, and a look at the rest of the weekend motorsports calendar.🏁 Darlington Picks: Chase Briscoe (both of us)📧 Want your local short track featured? 2026 Daytona 500 Controversy & F1's Biggest Problem Yet | Flag to Flag Ep. 3 | 2026
Twenty-five years since we lost Dale Earnhardt Sr., and we're not mourning, we're celebrating. I'm John, repping the #3 shirt loud and proud. Chad forgot to wear his. Moving on.This week Chad takes us inside the garage at Daytona after crewing the #95 GK Racing Chevy in the Truck Series, including being one of 33 trucks that failed pre-race inspection (the reason is less scandalous than it sounds, I promise). He's also heading to Atlanta this weekend for his first NASCAR O'Reilly Series race with Mike Harmon Racing, so we'll have boots on the ground coverage coming your way.We break down the IndyCar Phoenix oval test, Malukas leading, Newgarden right behind him, and what it signals for a series that feels like it's building toward something special. Then we shift to Formula 1, where Bahrain testing has drivers genuinely concerned about the 2026 regulations. When Max says it feels like Formula E on steroids and Fernando says his chef can navigate Turn 12, that's not just testing noise, that's a warning sign for the on track product. And then there's the Daytona 500. Tyler Reddick and 23XI got their moment, but the finish had everyone talking. We get into the Riley Herbst block, whether it was dirty or just a bad read, and why the team and manufacturer context makes this conversation so much bigger than the move itself. We also shout out Kwinana Beach Motorplex in Western Australia for our Local Racing Report, make our Atlanta picks (John is riding with Carson Hocevar, consider this your warning), and somehow end up calling Chad and John's good friend Jessie live on the podcast.New episodes every week. Episode 48: Newgarden Nashville Win, Piastri Dominates Zandvoort, IndyCar Silly Season Moves
Holy crap, what a weekend! We're still in shock from everything that went down in Nashville. John somehow kept a secret for FOUR MONTHS and surprised us with a garage tour of Joseph Newgarden's actual race car - and then the man goes and wins the damn thing! I'm not gonna lie, seeing John tear up when Newgarden crossed the line was something else. But wait, there's more! The past 24 hours have been absolutely insane for IndyCar news. Will Power to Andretti? Colton Herta moving to F1 as a test driver for Cadillac? What the hell is happening in this sport? We break it all down and try to make sense of the chaos.Oh, and Oscar Piastri just dominated Zandvoort with a Grand Slam weekend. The kid is absolutely on fire right now. We're giving our picks for Monza this weekend - spoiler alert: we might be getting a little delusional with our Ferrari predictions, but whatever, it's Monza!Chase Briscoe absolutely demolished the field at Darlington, leading 300+ laps. My driver didn't even survive half a lap, so that was fun. We're backing Ryan Blaney for Gateway this weekend because honestly, Penske just knows how to set up cars for these types of tracks. Also, big shoutout to Caitlyn Brown from Newgarden's pit crew for making the garage tour happen. If you're listening, we're definitely trying to get you on the show!Fair warning - John and I picked the exact same drivers for both F1 and NASCAR this week, which is honestly kind of weird for us. But when you know, you know.We covered local short track racing from Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway, talked about some Austin Cindric supercars news, and yeah, there might have been some technical difficulties because it wouldn't be a Flag to Flag episode without the wifi cutting out at least once.Subscribe if you want to hear two guys get way too emotional about racing and somehow pick the same drivers every week!Find us everywhere: FlagtoFlag_Podcast on Instagram, FlagtoFlagpodcast on TikTok and Facebook, Flag to Flag Podcast on Spotify and YouTube.
