Kevin Swift: From So Cal Surf to Gold Beach

#066. Like a lot of football coaches (myself included), breaking film down at the age of 10 with his father, a high school science teacher and football coach for 52 years, was the inspiration for Coach Kevin Swift to get into coaching. He attended Servite High School in Anaheim, California. At Servite, he was coached and mentored by some of the finest coaches around. All would move onto great success at the collegiate level from University of Washington, to University of Cincinnati, and to Chapman University. From Servite he would go on to play collegiately at FCS University of Northern Iowa and DIII University of Redlands for legendary small college coach Frank Serrao. Upon graduating, he became the secondary coach for DIII Claremont McKenna College and worked under highly respected John Zinda. After 2 years with the Stags, he accepted the Defensive Coordinator position at University of Redlands. He was the Bulldogs’ DC for 2 years and lead them to 2 consecutive years of being a top 5 DIII Defense nationally.  He returned to the football sidelines of Orange County at Fullerton Union High School. Over the next six years he moved from school to school long term subbing and fixing or creating top notch defensives in the highly competitive southern California large high school arena. He had a chance to rub elbows and match wits with some of the games finest coaches from Bruce Rollinson at Mater Dei to Bob Johnson at El Toro and presently Mission Viejo. Finally after 10 years of experience at a variety of schools he thought he was ready to become a head coach. About this same time his new wife were interested in getting more rural, like Orange County once was. These two desires would lead them from a school of 3,000 in southern California to a small school of 300 on the southern Oregon coast.  In close to 30 years of coaching he has come to realize that this great game allows me the tools and teaching opportunities to create not necessarily great football players but great men and teammates. This philosophy and attitude to create great men, great husbands, great fathers, great teammates, and great community leaders is what has allowed us to be the football successes we are today.

Wayne Voorhees: USA Football, How to Open a School, and a Fatal Bus Crash

#048. Coach Wayne Voorhees and I have a unique relationship. Wayne was the Head Football Coach at Legacy HS in 2016, and was looking to travel to California to play a football game. Upon returning home after the trip, Coach Voorhees and the team were involved in a fatal bus crash that left the driver dead, and the staff very badly injured. After hearing about the crash, I was asked by a close friend if I wanted to go out to Boulder, Colorado and visit the coaching staff and their families. We did, and it's a trip I will never forget. Coach Voorhees and his coaches survived the crashed and are recovering to this day. Coach Voorhees has since moved on in his career to another high school. In this episode, he describes that fateful day.Coach Voorhees has had many experiences during his football coaching career, and is an "expert" in opening schools. Laing and Holly Stevens: Where It All Began

#037.  Ladies and Gentlemen...Corinne and I have been looking forward to this episode since the moment we started this podcast. This is where it all began in my journey to become a Head Football Coach. I would like to introduce to you my Mom and Dad, Laing and Holly Stevens. They have a powerful story of love and forgiveness, restoration and perseverance. Laing has been a coach for 45+ years. He owns two CIF Southern section titles, multiple Coach of the Year awards, and has left an indelible legacy across Southern California with all of lives he has touched.Holly raised four children during all of this and showed us all how to love and sacrifice for her husband as she freed him up to work his calling in life. There are women all over the USA who have done this, and done it very well, but not as good as my Mom! (Yeah, I'm a little biased). Listen to hear how she gets through the tough times, but also how she supports Dad's mission and purpose.Their "together story" is one that can be made for TV! For those of you that know my parents would think automatically that it was my Dad who pursued and wooed my Mom. Not the case! We found out that it was actually Holly who made the decisive move to let  Dad know that he was the one. You got to hear to believe it. Laing's Head Coaching resume':Garden Grove (early to mid 70's)Ontario Christian (late 70's to early 80's) including a CIF Championship in 1978Nogales (mid to late 80's)Ayala (he opened the school as it's Athletic Director in the early 90's, and then did a one year transition year as Head ball Coach in '97)Ontario Christian (early 2000's) including a CIF Championship in 2002Calvary Chapel Murrieta (2007)He has also been an assistant at these and other schools where his impact was felt. There was a couple of years he took to be involved on staff at his church

Mark and Julie Pasquarella: An Adoption Story and How to Coach Your Own Son

#028.  I have a special connection with Mark and Julie. Mark was my first boss coming out of college. He hired me in 1994 at Ayala HS, and I served under him for 3 three years before I had to go get a teaching contract in another District. In those years, we went to the CIF Division 2 Finals twice! I was spoiled to be a part of a staff that had multiple former head coaches on it, including my Dad and mentor, Laing Stevens. We were very successful because the men understood Mark's vision for greatness, and combined that with some outstanding talent, and we were good to go. And here we are, 26 years later, back at it again together on the same staff. Mark and Julie have a wonderful adoption story that they share with us, and a full family life that has kept them very busy for their entire careers. They also share the good and not-so-good times during the seasons, and Mark's career change to become an administrator for a few years, before he transitioned back to the classroom and the football field where he finish his career. If you would like to contact Coach Pasquarella, his email is:[email protected]

Jose "Coco" Jarin: TAK Time All the Time!

#026. Coach Coco started coaching football at the Pop Warner level in 1980. As a coach, Coco learned early that a coach is as good as the players that he coaches. In 1980, Coco was fortunate to coach a team blessed with talent with 7 players going on to play major college football. The 1980 team went on to post a 15-0 record and a midget division state championship and a mythical National Championship. Coach Coco has had the honor to have coached three teams in three different levels to state titles with the latter being at Mt. SAC in 1997 where they also won a National Title.Coach Coco, not only has been blessed with good players, he has been surrounded by good quality coaches. In high school his head coach was Dave Lay who would go on to become offensive coordinator at San Diego State and Colorado State. While coaching at Sweetwater High school Coco was fortunate to coach under Gene Alim and learn from the likes of Stanford great Dave Tipton. While coaching at Southwestern College, Coco was influenced by Dan Underwood who played at Michigan State and coached at Arizona State and San Diego State. Coco believes that to be a good coach, one has to incorporate the qualities of others, while still being himself. While at Mt. SAC, Coach Coco once again found himself surrounded by quality coaches led by the late great  Coach Bill “Mountie Bill” Fisk.Coach Coco, has coached numerous players that have gone on to become coaches, 71 and still counting. Coco feels that as a coach, it is his duty to give back to the coaching community in the form of clinics and seminars. Coco has become a resource for many coaches in the coaching community. He wants to share football to the world and has reached new heights with the creation of social media and the website www.Takeaknee.com.Twitter:  @TAKCoachCocoInstagram:  @TakeakneecocoWife: Robin Lynn (35 years). Sons: Joshua Andre, Jonathan Albert, daughter-n-law JackieThree Grandchildren: Jade Soigne’e, Jonathan Albert Jr., and Jewel Soleil.

Peyton Erickson: Should I Stay or Should I Go?

#022. We have a great episode to share with you!  I had the opportunity to talk with Peyton Erickson.  I had been following her for sometime on social media.   She’s a banker, beach body coach, a fellow coach’s wife and also the host of her own podcast called The Coach’s wife Playbook podcast.  She’s married to Spencer Erickson who is an Assistant Defensive Line coach and director of player personnel at South Dakota State.  She and I had a great conversation talking about the Bliss and Blisters of this football married life.  Almost to the point where she wasn’t sure she was going to marry Spencer.  Our conversation is honest and real.  And though Peyton may have had her doubts she shares how she and Spencer overcame those relationship hurdles and found that marital bliss together. Coach's Wife🏈 💍Coach's Wife Playbook Podcast🎙Vacation Mover📦Dog Mommy🐾Believer in Christ ✝️Find Peyton: linktr.ee/peyton.erickson11Beach Body Coach! We had so much great content in our conversation with Dominic and Adriana, that we felt to leave anything out would be a disservice to their family and the extended village of The Farrar Family and The Charter Oak Football Family. So is an extra 20 minutes or so, of Dominic and Adriana talking about relationships and their village and how important it is to have that support system, and why it makes it so special.Charter Oak Football on Twitter: @COHSFootballThe Friday Night Life:Instagram: @thefridaynightlifeFacebook: The Friday Night LifeTwitter: @thefnlpodcastWebsite: www.thefridaynightlife.com
