Sharptails have been in the Dairy state forever, but they needed some help. The Wisconsin Sharptail Grouse Society is working to ensure they will be on the landscape forever. Ryan Callahan joins us in the conversation, to help spread the word.

I hit a milestone Bday today. So while I was feeling nostalgic, I found an old photo album and it had my first hunting license in it. That brought back a flood of memories, and I wanted to share one with you!

Terry Wilson is running for VP of The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association. It doesn't happen very often, but occasionally one of the rank and file members steps up to throw their name in the hat. Terry lays out his platform and vision for the future of NAVHDA. Two first time bird hunter, drove from Florida to Michigan's UP. why would some try the impossible? Well there is an old saying about something being wasted on the young.... Evan and Amanda had alot of firsts on this trip. Listen up and count the first for yourself!

Rachel Willard decided to jump into the dog world with both feet! her husband Andrew became her cheering section. It all paid off for the opening season in Montana. So much so, that they just got another pup to add to the family.  

Last trip to ND, I kept the recorder on the picnic table. That way those short stories that never make an episode can be saved. This is what we all do and wish we could do again, or forget....  

We did this around the kitchen table, while we were on the great plains in search of Sharptails. Congrats to you if your score is higher than Trents???

Greg Blair from Purina joins me in Wisconsin to talk about all the different venues there are for bird dog lovers like us!  This was the day that I ran Tagus in his NA test. Greg got to watch us in the field and water portions then we took a break and chatted about how all the styles of testing and trialing come together.

It's been a few years since Todd was on the show. I always learn a few new tricks when I talk with him. We talk about everything from when to start training, to when to stop, (the answer is never!) Molding a pup early is a key factor. The proof comes in the hunting season.

James and Luke Jubran started Smile Outdoors. it is a series of books aimed towards kids reading about the wild world we love. Lets be honest ( I helped raise three kidos) getting kids into the outdoors can be at a minimum, complicated. So how about reading to to them, and teaching them the alphabet, using books written and designed by hunters. It's like imprinting a love of the natural world to them without a backpack or car seat! My friend Jill was in the Valley this week. We took our dogs on a walk and swim and the conversation that developed was worthy of hitting the record button. Jill spends half of her year traveling to learn from some of the best trainers in the country. It took some selective breeding about 60 years ago, but they got what they were looking for in Hungary. We just wrapped up a weekend in Wisconsin, learning some training methods that were new to me. I finally sit down with a DD owner, breeder and club member. And I did not have to brush up on my German. Max and his wife live and love the breed and the club that comes with it!  VDD-GNA is a group that sticks to the traditions that gave us many of the breeds that we hunt with and brag about today.                               

Gunner Kennels engineer, Colton, found a job that justifies having a kennel full of bird dogs. One of the many ( dog crazy) employees that makeup the staff of the worlds safest dog crate.

What happens when you meet  a retired Marine Corp General? You talk bird dogs, and hunting of course. I had the pleasure of spending a morning in the quail fields with Walt Boomer. Along with meeting his beloved GSPs later in the evening. A day I will remember for a long time.

Scott Miller is the resident trainer at Brays Island. Before that his dogs earned more than 700 placements in field trials. he was the NBHA Open Handler of the year for 15 consecutive years. Starting out with training and competing and wining in the Coon Dog World Championships. He then took the NBHA trial world to a new level.

Jill Koran spends her summers traveling the country. With a truck full of dogs, a fifth wheel camper and buddy to share the road with, They meet trainers, hunters, breeders and work their dogs along the way. She is on a grail quest to explore the world of bird dogs.
