Stephen Rebello EP68 The Jay Michael Show
Stephen Rebello was born in Fall River, Massachusetts and grew up in nearby Somerset. His mother was a hairdresser, his father a millworker; both were movie-lovers. As Evelyn and Arthur Rebello's only child, he was shamelessly over-indulged. He spent many of his waking hours with his nose stuck in a book and/or with his ears covered in headphones listening obsessively to every kind of music imaginable. HIs posterior was also often parked in a fifth row center seat at the double and triple-features playing at southern New England's grandest movie palaces and fleapits alike. He has transcendent memories of discovering Dickens, Bradbury, John Cheever and Shirley Jackson, the music of Beatles, Stones, and the folk movement, alongside movies from Hitchcock, Fellini, Antonioni, David Lean, Fred Zinnemann, Richard Lester, Louis Malle, Visconti, and Arthur Penn. His childhood and adolescence were exceptionally nice. Easily-pleased rich folks paid him to vocalize at parties and weddings, even after hearing him sing on a weekly radio show. Later, even richer people paid him to model expensive boys wear for local clothing stores. Sometimes the owners of those stores let him keep those threads — in exchange for mentioning where he got them. Four years at Somerset High School weren't so terrible, either. At least two of those years were spent madly in love (nope, still not telling) and the other two were finally spent achieving academic excellence. Between part-time jobs sorting returned albums in a record factory and slinging sandwiches in an Italian deli (despite being unable to pronounce half of the menu items and being hated by his co-worker), he plotted his getaway. He graduated UMass Dartmouth with double majors in literature and psychology. After two years of counseling patients and families at a Fall River, Massachusetts hospital and rehabilitation facility, he moved to Boston where he earned an MSW from Simmons College School of Social Work. While working as a supervising clinical social worker at a Harvard University-affiliated hospital, he began post-grad classes in psychology at Harvard. Off the clock, he was treating private clients and writing constantly – fiction, movie reviews, the works. While on semester break and on vacation in Los Angeles, his boyhood idol Alfred Hitchcock granted an in-person interview at his offices at Universal. The interview, published originally in the Boston underground favorite The Real Paper, turned out to be Hitchcock's very last and subsequently got syndicated worldwide. Rebello decided to spend a year trying his hand at writing for a living and, relocating to Santa Monica, California, he got globe-hopping assignments from American Film, Cinefantastique, Cosmopolitan, GQ, The Los Angeles Times, Movieline (where he was Editor at Large), Playboy (Contributing Editor), Saturday Review, Southwest Art, Vibe and other national and international magazines many of which have since gone (sadly) extinct. (Don't blame Rebello.) The legendary Irene Mayer Selznick in The New York Times reviewed Rebello's 1988 debut non-fiction book Reel Art: Great Posters From the Golden Age of the Silver Screen and, at an event held at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the book was honored as one of the best ever written on the subject of Hollywood. Tim Cassidy EP66 The Jay Michael Show
In the deep forests of North America—where mist settles low over cedar groves and silence hangs between the trees—there are stories. Stories passed from Indigenous elders to frontier settlers, from seasoned hunters to modern outdoorsmen. Stories of something large. Something intelligent. Something that does not quite fit into the known catalog of North American wildlife. For most, these stories remain folklore. For Tim E. Cassidy, they became a lifelong calling. Tim E. Cassidy stands at the intersection of science and mystery. A trained Naturalist and Wildlife Biologist, Cassidy has spent decades studying ecosystems, animal behavior, tracking patterns, and environmental systems with a disciplined, evidence-based approach. He grew up in Southern Ohio where he learned the values, traditions, and language of his native culture. His ancestors left North Carolina prior to the Trail of Tears and settled in Kentucky before eventually moving into Southern Ohio. Kelli Maroney EP64 Jay Michael Show
Kelli Maroney is an American actress whose career spans several decades, with 72 production credits, including 31+ films and over 540 hours of television. She first came to recognition as the bad seed teen Lolita “Kimberly Harris” in the ABC Daytime drama RYAN's HOPE, winning the plum role only two weeks after arriving in NYC to attend classes at The National Shakespeare Company Conservatory. She soon found herself acting opposite the likes of Joan Fontaine and Christopher Reeve as they made guest appearances on the show. She went on to take over the role of sex-kitten manipulator “Tina Lord” on ABC's ONE LIFE to LIVE. Kelli also gained notice for her portrayal of the exasperated cheerleader “Cindy Carr/Spirit Bunny” in FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, a film that for many came to simply personify the 80s. Today Kelli's cheerleader costume is on display in the Universal Studios Museum. Strong female leading roles, notably MAC-10-toting cheerleader “Samantha Belmont” in the zombie apocalypse classic NIGHT OF THE COMET, the sweet Killbot-slaying “Alison Parks” in CHOPPING MALL, “Jamie” in the underground slasher THE ZERO BOYS, teen psychotic-killer “Jolene” in SLAYGROUND, and several other well-received films quickly earned Kelli her seat at the table as a final girl in the family of the horror genre. She also guest-starred in a variety of prime-time ABC, NBC, and CBS shows, including the ever-popular MURDER, SHE WROTE. Kelli has said that her most fulfilling role to date is the schizophrenic femme fatale “Merrie/Meredith” in Showtime's noir thriller FACE DOWN (written and directed by NIGHT OF THE COMET's Thom Eberhardt), playing opposite Joe Mantegna, J.K. Simmons, and Adam Ant. Other streaming highlights include Kelli's channeling Tammy Faye Baker on HBO's TRUE BLOOD and playing herself in ADULT SWIM's TIM and ERIC'S AWESOME SHOW-GREAT JOB! alongside Patrick Duffy. Tina Djuretic EP60 The Jay Michael Show
Tina Djuretic is a Canadian author living in Vancouver. She was raised by strict, religious parents who isolated her from the rest of the world. What followed were three toxic relationships that nearly destroyed her. After her last breakup she sought help in the form of a channeller, who sent her on a path of healing. While writing her memoir she found forgiveness - for herself and her abusers. This taught her a lot about generational trauma, gaslighting, narcissists, and putting up healthy boundaries. It's Tina's goal to share her story with anyone who find themselves in a similar situation, and to educate people on the subject of toxic relationships, healing, spirituality, and not just surviving...but CREATING. Her book, Lost In The Overwhelm is a practical, hands on workbook, full of lessons and journalling prompts, meant to assist you in healing your childhood trauma. She had a lot of healing to do herself, and at the time, she had no idea where to start, so she asked for help. She asked for answers, and the Universe provided. Now she would like to pay it forward and share those lessons with you, because we ALL deserve healing. We ALL deserve peace. We ALL deserve to feel whole. Nicole Mikell EP59 The Jay Michael Show
This week's guest is indie author Nicole Mikell. Nicole shares her experience as a new indie writer. Mikell describes learning to navigate the indie publishing world, from formating the files to get them ready for publication, to getting feedback from alpha and beta readers and her editor, to sending the advance ready copies, to releasing the book for publication. Another part of being an indie author is marketing her books. Besides friends and family, she has a street team that helps her with promoting her book on social media and getting her book in the hands of more readers. Her debut novel, Baby It's You, was published earlier this year, and centers on Jane, Olive and Hunter. The second book in the series, Can't Hurry Love, will be released in December 2025. Can't Hurry Love showcases Ivy, Olive's best friend, Lee and Donovan. The series takes place in the small fictional town of Clairesville in Tennessee. These are interconnected stand-alone books. Some characters from book one pop up in book two. Mikell explains that her plan is to have a five-book series based in Clairesville. She is currently working on book three. Starting as a kid who wrote stories to share with her family, to now being a published indie author, Nicole Mikell has come a long way! Formed by married duo Frank and River Rabbitte, the four-piece band has been compared to Amy Winehouse and The Black Keys and described as a "heavily distorted roadhouse raunch". Their high-energy live shows have been featured at festivals like SXSW and Summerfest, and they have toured extensively across the US. Frank and River (Toussaint) Rabbitte, along with two other members, form a four-piece band with a musical style said to be a blend of garage rock, blues, and soul, often described as "bluesy, smoky, sexy, and raw". Likened to a combination of Amy Winehouse, The Black Keys, and Janis Joplin, their music has been called "heavily distorted roadhouse raunch". The band is known for its high-energy, "sweat-soaked" performances at festivals such as SXSW and Summerfest, as well as regional touring. Named one of Do312's Chicago Bands You Should Be Listening To, they are celebrated for bringing a "danger, romance, and the raw, electric thrill of rock 'n' roll" back to the genre. Stephanie Tomlinson EP57 The Jay Michael Show
Stephanie Tomlinson says, Being a published writer has always been one of my dreams. When I was younger, I loved books because they offered an escape from reality—an adventure, or mystery, and of course, romance. I promised myself that one day there would be a book out there with my name on the cover. One that made readers feel the way I did. I'm so proud to have made that dream a reality. My ideal Heaven is at home with my son and incredible husband (and best friend) of 24 years on our hobby farm, complete with dogs, chickens, an orchard, and a greenhouse. I enjoy the tranquility of nature and love a good thunderstorm. I enjoy writing stories with strong female characters. Emma Kate EP 48 The Jay Michael Show
Emma Kate is a contemporary romance author who creates spicy love stories that always end in a Happily Ever After (HEA). She writes under a pseudonym and tries to infuse her love for romance and humor into each book. With her first book, Forever Wild, she will introduce readers to the swoon-worthy and sarcasm-filled Wild Bluffs Series. The Wild Bluffs Series is a collection of stand-alone contemporary romance novels set in the fictional town of Wild Bluffs, Colorado. Each book features its own unique love story, but the characters are related (well, most of them!) and each book is connected through the small-town charm and spirit of Wild Bluffs. Emma grew up playing sports and reading books, often devouring novels on long car rides to the city. Her love for stories started at a young age, but it wasn't until she was in her early twenties that she became the voracious reader she is today. After over a decade working in philanthropy and consulting, Emma decided to follow her heart (and her husband's encouragement) and write the stories she loves to read.
