The Paper Box Sessions

I am so happy to announce we are back! and currently recording new artists. We just released the first Issue of sorts for season 2 available on the website now! features special playlists, articles about past paper box artists and more!

From the moment I heard them rehearsing in the loft, I knew this was going to be something special.  Back when the first sessions were being prepped and getting ready to drop, Charles reached out to me and sent me a Soundcloud to their debut full length album The Light Fantastic. It was bluesy and poppy and I loved every moment of it. I just imagined being to sitting on a lawn listening to wile at Bonnaroo, these guys are going places and I am so honored to be able to feature them as our last band for this Summer's series.   Unfortunately we were unable to record a podcast with them before they had to leave. So this week we are featuring a special episode I recording with the amazingly talented concert photographer Tim Bugbee.  He is one of the most experienced guys in the game. We actually talked briefly about shooting shows in my home city wile I was in High School. Please go and check out his work!

Matt Wheeler is a perfect example of how the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania music scene is a community through and through. Shortly after Paper Box launched, Matt reached out to me to show his support for the series and also to throw his hat in the ring for a session. His music instantly got my attention, its pure literary folk tone along with its full band sound.  Me and Shane sat down and talked to Matt and his Cello player Andrew Berg about life as musicians and the balance of creativity with the responsibilities of life.

One of the coolest group of dudes I have had the pleasure of meeting in a very long time, I have known about Wild Rompit since they were back at Drexel playing west Philly college basement shows and were a part of the Drexel Music Industry Program. Comprised of Blair Ollendorf, Brandon Bost, Sean Donaghy and Paul Impellizeri, they're music is pop filled fun yet complex beyond they're years.  I think the one aspect to our session that surprised me the most about these guys though is that they ran through they're performance in one take. This might not sound like a big deal but its something that hasn't happened since Ron Gallo stopped by last April. Then Finding out that the boys hadnt played together for almost 6 months.... it just showed how in sync these guys really were and how playing good music with old friends is like riding bike.  Be sure to check out their show at Ruba on August 14th and check back through out the week for the full podcast and Live performance we did with them!

Bride & Groom has been on my radar since this winter when I first heard their single "On the run", it was fun and had intracacies that new folk bands rarely show. The Band,  a two piece folk group from Montreal comprised of Jesse Daniel Smith and Kaitlyn Raitz were one of my most anticipated sessions. Being first non- Philadelphia band that I wanted to pitch for the series, I was hesitant to feature them, only because the purpose of this series is to focus on my city and the music community that has been emerging here. But Bride & Groom is such a great representation of the musical climate today, their usage of every new age piece of artistic expression. From Crowd sourcing their music, to being youtube sensations and their smart usage of social media. I feel every up and coming musician can learn something from Bride & Grooms journey. So sit tight and take a Listen!

Ever since I decided to start this series, the musical mind of Gabriel Guerrero has been someone I wanted to talk to. I have known Gabe for years and his artist talents have always been something I wanted to explore. The music is some of the most sonically poet music I have heard in a very long time.

Hemming, the moniker for Candice Martello was one of the most emotionally gripping female vocalists I have found in a long time. I never watched her appearance on the Linda Perry Project but was instantly hooked when I heard her song Vitamins. She stopped by to talk about her new album and her time on the Show.

I remember finding these guys on a NPR tiny desk submission tape last January, sitting in their living room. Looping DIY percussions with everything from synth boards to beer bottles and laundry hampers. They're creative way of making music reminded of part OK Go in terms of their music video style and part Tune-Yards. Needless to say from that point on I was hooked.    I was incredibly grateful for these guys to be apart of the series, in my opinion they are doing some of the most innovative and creative music in Philly and I couldn't have asked for a nicer group of guys to spend a afternoon with.   Their live session goes up Friday, but in the meantime check out the same video that made me fall in love them. along with our website page for up to date content and their bandcamp to more music from the band  

I was extremely lucky to have none other than Ron Gallo on for the first ever guest of the Paper Box Sessions. Ron Gallo first came on my radar back last summer when I saw him perform with his former band Toy Soldiers. His performance was electric and I instantly became a huge fan of his work.  I grew to have a huge level of respect for this guy, after learning of the amazing things he was doing for the Philadelphia music scene with American Diamond Recordings along with his persistance to build the music scene here in the city of Brotherly love. Ron and I sat down to chat about everything from his current projects and the origins of his music career to his current creative growth as a musician.

I wanted to bring you a conversation I had last weekend with a dear friend of mine. His name is Ken Grand-pierre and he is in my opinion one of the hardest working concert photographers in New York. We sat down last Saturday to have a long discussion about our craft, our love for music and our love for cursing on air. I figured to sit down and exchange stories with a friend this close would give all of a closer look into my life and my origins story along with learning about ken who is a fascinating person with immense experience in the industry.
