In Conversation: Arlene Schnitzer & Brian Ferriso
On November 5, 2014, Brian Ferriso, the Director and Chief Curator of the Portland Art Museum, sat down with Life Trustee, arts advocate, and philanthropist, Arlene Schnitzer to discuss her life as it related to the exhibition, In Passionate Pursuit: The Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Collection and Legacy. One reason we are releasing this episode is that Arlene talks in great detail about her experiences with Robert Colescott, whose exhibition Art and Race Matters: The Career of Robert Colescott is currently on view, though only through online experiences, as we are currently closed in response to the global Coronavirus pandemic. It also brings us great sadness that Arlene passed away on April 4th. Hearing Arlene tell the stories from her life has never felt more appropriate or inspiring.Featured in this episode:Arlene Schnitzer, Portland Art Museum Life TrusteeBrian Ferriso, Portland Art Museum's Director and Chief CuratorMentioned in this Episode:Arlene Schnitzer's historic gift to the Portland Art MuseumArt and Race Matters: The Career of Robert ColescottArt and Race Matters panel discussionIn Memoriam: Arlene SchnitzerJack PortlandMichele RussoLouis BunceSally HaleyHenk PanderRobert ColescottWarrington ColescottGregory GrenonJordan SchnitzerRelated links:VIDEO: Arlene Schnitzer on supporting the arts and the Portland Art MuseumProduced by Jon RichardsonWant to submit an idea for a future episode of the podcast? Getting to Know You: Strengthening Relationships at the Portland Art Museum
On our Podcast idea submission page, Ben Conte wrote "My daughter and I have been visiting the Museum since we moved to Portland in 2007. Most of our visits are together when we see a new exhibit or just want to stop by when we are out for a "dad and daughter night." But we do go solo or with friends. A few of the most authentic moments in our relationship have occurred in our mutual discovery of deep beauty at the museum. I think there is a way to talk about that in a compelling way." After a brief chat, Ben and I thought it would be nice to not only chat with him and his daughter but to a few other sets of people who have had a relationship strengthened by visiting the Museum.Featured in this episode:Ben Conte & MaeveMatthew Friday & MorganDrew Field & Gwendolyn FieldMentioned in this Episode:OMSIThe Shape of SpeedNorthwest Film CenterPortland Art Museum Programs CalendarPortland Art Museum MembershipProduced by Jon RichardsonIntro/Outro music by Jon RichardsonAll other music by Mark OrtonSpecial Thanks to Iuliia Mamina and Emma Ganger-SpivakWant to submit an idea for a future episode of the podcast? Natural Selection: An Evangelist, a Babysitter, and the Family they Loved
In 1881, William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted Nature's Fan (also known as Girl with Child) — a large oil painting depicting a young woman and a small child playing in the clearing of a wooded area. It currently hangs in the European Art galleries of the Portland Art Museum on a long-term loan from Helen and Jerome (Jerry) Stern. This episode of the Portland Art Museum Podcast is about this painting's journey from Bouguereau's studio to the walls of the Museum, focusing specifically on the last 50 years. What started as a family's search for a babysitter resulted in the chance meeting that would lead Helen and Jerry to inherit this painting and inspire a lifetime and legacy of collecting art. This episode is narrated by Jerry and Helen's grandson, Jonathan Singer. Jonathan's sister Anna's artwork can be found at the Portland Art Museum's Rental Sales Gallery.Featured in this episode:Jonathan Singer, Partner at Bard Singer, PCHelen Stern, philanthropistMentioned in this Episode:Jerome "Jerry" SternNature's Fan (Girl with Child)IRCOReed CollegePortland Center StageOregon Bus ProjectOregon Jewish Community FoundationKathryn KuhlmanExcerpt from Daughter of DestinyDale ChihulyLino TagliapietraMichele RussoGregory GrenonSherrie WolfSherrie Wolf's take on BouguereauThe Hoxton HotelIn the HeightsProduced by Jon RichardsonIntro/Outro music by Jon RichardsonAll other music by Mark Orton
