THE PRETTY LITTLE PODCAST!

Join Deadbeat Chad, Chucky Sleaze and Just Jess in this pop culture catch-all show as we break down and discuss everything from movies, cult classic TV shows, video games, music, tier lists, anime, and other freakishly weird topics that our deranged little minds are drawn to.

Heavy Metal (1981) and Heavy Metal 2000 (2000, duh)

From 1977 to 2023, Heavy Metal Magazine was consistently pushing the boundaries of fantasy storytelling. With it's roots firmly planted in science fiction, it managed to blend sword and sorcery, wizards and warriors, hyper-violence, erotica, and cyberpunk seamlessly together, with the help of award-winning authors and artists. Truly, a work who's influence is still prevalent today in films, comics and video games. Join Chad and Jess as they discuss their history with Heavy Metal, and express their fondness for the feature film, while explaining why the pseudo-sequel fell short on most levels. The Ren & Stimpy Show (1991-1995)

In the 90's, gross shit for kids was a big seller. The grosser the better, as far as marketing was concerned, and one television network took it upon themselves to capitalize heavily on the phenomenon. Nickelodeon, back in the day, was a great place to spend your childhood years. They had it all! Double Dare, Legends of the Hidden Temple, GUTS, and Nick Arcade were redefining game shows for a younger audience, while scripted shows such as Doug, Rugrats, AAAHH!!! REAL MONSTERS, and, of course, our topic for this episode Ren & Stimpy were massive smash-hits for primetime audiences, young and old. Chad and Jess were just a couple of sponge-brained mocking birds at the height of early Nicktoon's success, and both agree that The Ren & Stimpy Show was the obvious stand out. So, does it still hold up, or is it better left to rest in the comfort of bygone blissful nostalgia? Check out this episode to hear what they have to say. Studio Ghibli (Hayao Miyazaki Films)

For a week straight, Chad and Jess escaped the dumpster fire of the world outside, and retreated into the cozy world of Studio Ghibli; more specifically, the films of Hayao Miyazaki. These captivating achievements in animated filmmaking have managed to top themselves time and time again for over 4 decades, while collecting numerous awards along the way. And, although they do exist together in a fully realized universe, they manage to remain truly unique experiences unto themselves with themes that appeal to the young and young-at-heart alike. Join us today as we discuss our experience revisiting these cherished whimsical masterpieces. Stay Pretty!Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube

    The Maxx (MTV Series, 1995)

Once again we pull from the animation well of MTV to discuss The Maxx, a strange animated series based on comic veteran Sam Keith's (Wolverine, The Sandman, Ojo) 35 issue comic series of the same name. This stream of conscience  psychedelic road trip of an animated series has a lot going on...like, a whole lot. Although muddled down with a convoluted plot that is loosely strung together with questionable character motivations, The Maxx still holds up strongly to the test of time in the visual department of animation history, even pioneering some of the tricks we would see in cartoons that came out after this. Can plot and character development take a back seat to visual appeal for something this ambitious to succeed, or did it underperform on every fundamental level to remain relevant in the modern zeitgeist? Chad and Jess are back to talk about their experience. Bon Appetit!   Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (Film, 1988) and Who Censored Roger Rabbit? (Novel, 1981)

Today, we're talking about Who Framed Roger Rabbit, a beloved, award winning movie from our childhood that combines a groundbreaking mix of live-action and animation. And, we'll also be discussing the lesser known novel that the motion picture is supposed to be based on, but took the most liberties of any adaptation in the history film, aside from maybe Lawnmower Man. Spawn the Animated Series (1997-1999) and Live Action Film (1997)

Comic books in the 90's ushered in a new breed of super-hero. Darker, edgier, angrier, and in Todd McFarlane's case, weirder. From the independent exodos that became Image comics comes their flagship title: Spawn. When CSA Soldier, Al Simmons, is betrayed by the government agency that created him, he is murdered and sent to hell. Once there, he makes a deal with the devil to come back to earth to see his wife, Wanda. But, Malbolgia himself has spent the past 5 years crafting a life for him to come back to that will break his will to stay and follow through with Hell's plan to have Al lead Malbolgia's army into Armageddon. Now forced to come to terms that he has been dead for 5 years, Al Simmons is lost to the moniker that is Hellspawn, and must find a way to keep his humanity while wanting unrelenting justice for those responsible for his death. Chad and Jess are here today to talk about the HBO animated Series Spawn, as well as the lesser appreciated live action film of the same name, but Chad loves anyway. Aeon Flux (Series 1991-1995, Film 2005)

Back in it's heyday, MTV was actually kida.....badass. They were pioneers of how society would interact with, and be influenced by pop-culture. Among the countless hours of music and celebrity gossip, and while they weren't busy killing radio stars, they decided to take a risk on animation, which was already part of the MTV brand with all of their trippy animated bumpers. From that, comes Liquid Television, an animated/live action surreal anthology series that aired back in the early '90s. Aeon Flux was one of the featured segments, and became popular enough to spawn a short television series that became a massive hit with the horny sci-fi weirdo crowd, our own Chad included. Over the decades, Aeon Flux has definitely earned it's cult-classic fanbase with the style and substance that is synonymous with this iconic series, and has influenced other creators to conceive some very interesting content. And, of course, like anything else we love from our childhood, this too received a pretty piss-poor live-action adaptation...but not a bad sci fi experience of it's own. Chad and Jess are here to tell you what they think about this blast-from-the-past, apocalyptic, biopunk gem. Enjoy!Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube

    Futurama (1999-2003, 2008-2013, 2023-?)

WE'RE BACK, BABY! And, we're ready to talk about one of our favorite cartoon series of all time, Futurama. In the year 1999, hapless pizza delivery boy, Phillip J. Fry, is duped into a fake delivery run at a cryogenic lab on New Year's Eve.  After realizing he's been had, he accidentally(?) freezes himself in a pod, and awakens 1,000 years in the future. Once there, he meets a wacky cast of colorful weirdos, and settles into a new life as different kind of delivery boy. Joining him on his adventures are Bender the Robot, Turanga Leela, Amy Wong, Professor Farnsworth, Hermes Conrad, Dr. Zoidberg, Nibbler, and even Scruffy the Janitor. Now, join Chad and Jess as they have a discussion about Matt Groening's take on the world of tomorrow in this award winning animated series that is out of this world!Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube

    Beavis and Butt-Head (Series 1993-1997, 2011, 2022-?) and Do America (Film 1996)

32 years ago, Mike Judge introduced the world to Beavis and Butt-Head, a ground-breaking animated MTV series focused on two unintelligent, sexually misguided Gen X teenagers and their sordid misadventures in the fictional town of Highland, TX. This absolute banger of a series has managed to stand the test of time and receive not one, but two reboots, two feature-length films, major console video game adaptations, cameos in other popular television shows, and a laundry list of merchandise to suffice even the most hardcore of collectors to this day. To say they have carved out a spot in the pop-culture pantheon is an understatement for sure, but how have these two emotionally stunted, misogynistic, criminally stupid, excruciatingly ugly slackers who seem to inhabit all that is wrong with humanity manage to captivate an audience of fans, old and new, for OVER 3 DECADES? Chad and Jess are here today to try and shed some light on the more positive aspects to this series, and explain why they have stayed faithful fans since childhood, enjoy!Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube

Join us as we talk about a short-lived television series that has a bit of a cult following these days, about the loveable middle-aged curmudgeon film critic, Jay Sherman and his apathetic antics as the host of basic cable television's Coming Attractions. This series managed to be an absolute time capsule of the mid 90's, while also being ahead of it's time, and Chad and Jess are here to tell you why they love it!Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube

Shrunken Heads (1994): Tales from the Crypt disguised as Goosebumps

For this year's Halloween episode, Chad and Jess tried to watch something a little different...a little more "kid friendly". What they watched was "Shrunken Heads", a film that got a little confused on it's way to soccer practice, and ended up at the liquor store. Directed by Richard Elfman, Produced by Charles Band and distributed by Full Moon Pictures, this movie has a very good bad pedigree, but is it a good bad movie, or a bad bad movie? Every once in a while, the stars align and humanity is gifted magic from the Entertainment Gods. This phenomenon happened 25 years ago when MTV took a risk on a group of plucky, fresh-faced lunatics with a flair for the absurd, and Jackass was unleashed on the masses. Evolution (2001): Lather, Rinse, Defeat!

The early to mid 2000's were full of raunchy teen comedy movies, each pushing the envelope further and further into unrated depravity. But, along the way, we did get some tamer movies that tried to incorporate other genres into the comedy world. Science fiction seemed to be winning formula from around '96 - '06 with releases such as "Independence Day", "Mars Attacks!", "Galaxy Quest", and today's film, "Evolution", which combines "The X-Files" and "Ghostbusters" and wraps it all up with a National Lampoon bow. Toys (1992): Dumbledore's Army

Back in 1992, film director Barry Levinson teamed up with award winning comedian/actor Robin Williams to create a film about toys...well, also war...but, not just that either, it's also about relationships, maturing, and accepting your shortcomings. It's about a lot of things, but how well can so many concepts work together in an art film disguised as a family(?) movie? Today, Chad and Jess are talking about one Jess' favorite childhood films, that feels like a strange combination of "War Games", "Small Soldiers" and an early Windows screen saver. This film will leave you feeling some kind of way...here's how we felt.Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube

Super Mario Bros. (1993): It Does What Nintendon't

Video game adaptations are a dime a dozen these days, each with varying degrees of viewer satisfaction from fans. But, every modern hit or miss owes a debt of gratitude to the video game adaptation that started it all, Super Mario Bros. Due to millions of people around the world hooked on the antics of two brotherly plumbers and their never ending princess rescue missions, it made perfect sense that the Mario franchise would be the first at bat. So, why, with so many iterations of games featuring the Mario Brothers, did their motion picture debut take such bazaar liberties and unnecessary abuse of cannon to create a live action version of something we knew and loved so well? Nobody really has a good explanation, but despite their best efforts, the cast and crew involved, oddly enough, manage to pull off an enjoyable, unique experience that NEVER would have been made today. Love it or hate it, it was made...it exists, but does it really deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as other failures such as Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, Double Dragon, or House of the Dead? We at The Pretty Little Podcast don't think so, and we would love to share our opinions with you!Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube

    Pee-Wee's Playhouse (1986-1990): Orchestrated Chaos

In the history of children's television shows few have managed to stand the test of time quite like Pee-Wee's playhouse. Every Saturday morning, Pee-Wee Herman and a colorful cast of people, puppets, cartoon characters, and clay models held captive the minds of countless fanatics, young and old, during that coveted time slot between bowls of cereal and exploring the neighborhood with your friends. The familiar cast welcomed you openly into the specifically weird, wonderful world of Puppet Land; a place where there is no word for conformity, and you are encouraged wholeheartedly to be the version of yourself that only you can be. Conky, Pterri, Chairry, Globey, Mr. Window, Cool Cat, Dirty Dog, Chicky Baby, The Talking Fish, Clocky, Floory, Penny, El Hombre, Dog Chair, Jambi, Cowboy Curtis, Miss Yvonne, King of Cartoons, Captain Carl, Mrs. Rene, The Cowntess, Reba the Mail Lady, The Dinosaur Family, and of course, Pee Wee himself are always there with a secret word, a snack time recipe, creative activities, and a playhouse full of love and acceptance for whoever you may be!Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube

Typically, as podcasters we schedule our episode topics in advance. But, every once in a while the episodes will do the work for us. This week, Chad and Jess randomly watched a Netflix double-feature of the early 90's theatrical adaptation of The Addams Family, followed by the more recent Rob Zombie re-imagining of The Munsters. Both films are based on similar 1960's television concepts, but took vastly different directions in their execution. How's it Coen?

Chad and Jess are back again for a Director Discussion on Joel and Ethan Coen, better known as the Coen Brothers. For over 40 years the Coens have made some of the most interesting and well received movies in Hollywood; Blood Simple (1984), Raising Arizona (1987), Barton Fink (1991), Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), No Country for Old Men (2007), Burn After Reading (2009), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), Hail, Caesar! (2016),...the list goes on and on. Chucky is back with Chad and Jess to talk about one of his favorite childhood movies, Cabin Boy. When pampered, self-centered fancy lad Nathaniel Mayweather graduates from prep school, he is to set sail aboard The Queen Catherine to join his father in Hawaii. One small mishap diverts his path to a quaint little fishing town, where he mistakenly ends up boarding The Filthy Whore, a fisherman's boat with a crew of roughneck, hard-edged seafarers that is anything but luxurious. Tusk (2014): Wallace the Walrus

Every once in a while, a prolific director will step out of their comfort zone and do something completely unexpected. Because of this, Chad and Jess are back to discuss an odd installation in Kevin Smith's (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy) filmography, Tusk. Originally conceived on Smith's podcast, Tusk became an inside joke on the show, and eventually was voted on by listeners and fans to make the movie or not. #walrusyes won by a landslide, and for better or worse, the film was made. But, what is it about this film that can possibly stand out in the wake of so many other body horror films inspired by The Human Centipede? Does it have an identity of it's own, or is it simply the punchline it was meant to be? Whatever the case, we here at The Pretty Little Podcast commend anybody that tries something new, and we have some opinions about the film that we can't wait to share.Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube

The Lost Boys (1987): Show Feet

Today, Chad and Jess are back to talk about a beloved 1980's cult classic film, that for some reason Chad had never seen until now, The Lost Boys. For us, vampire films are extremely hit or miss. From Nosferatu to Twilight, it seems as if every writer and director have their own opinion as to what the rules of being eternally damned should be. Some stay more traditional, while others tend to be more modern and edgy, but with The Lost Boys, Joel Schumacher demanded we hold his beer and watch helplessly in awe of both, and neither at the same time. Does it hold up simply because of horny nostalgia, or can it stand it's ground in the endless plethora of vampiric content regurgitated year after year? We'll try to answer that question while we get distracted by a shirtless saxman and severe lack of crying little sisters in this episode!Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube

Though reluctant at first, the citizens of Sesame Street wish him a fond farewell to possibly find happiness with his new adoptive family. However, upon hearing that Bird's best pal, Snuffy isn't allowed to visit, he backflips outta there, and hits the road back to The Street. Shortly after, local news reports alert Big Bird's friends and neighbors that he is missing, and they immediately rally together to go find him, and get their boy back.Warner Brothers Family Entertainment, Jim Henson Studios and Children's Television Workshop proudly present "Follow That Bird", the very first ever feature length film based on the beloved children's classic television series, "Sesame Street". So big, in fact, that it catches the eye of an enthusiastic sports tycoon who takes the game from their driveway to the stadium. The People Under the Stairs (1991): Head Trauma for Daddy

What would happen if Wes Craven combined "Home Alone" and "Nothing but Trouble"? Well, he'd come up with "The People Under the Stairs", a film that has elements of both, but not quite as good as either. And, for good measure, why not throw in a little of "The Goonies",  "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Twin Peaks" while he's at it. A film mostly designed to highlight the class divide in a big city, The People Under the Stairs is definitely one of the more odd installments in Craven's filmography, and not nearly as noteworthy as many of his other films. But, despite his greater efforts, Craven has manifested something that feels plagiarized, but also manages to have unique identity (Just not really within a genre).  Intro/Outro Music by Bullet Machine // Follow us on Instagram and YouTube
