Not All Doses Are Equal: Exploring High vs. Low Dose Ketamine and the Healing Power of Discomfort

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Dr. Juan Pablo Galindo breaks down the nuanced differences between psycholytic and psychedelic dosing in Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)—and why the way we dose matters for therapeutic outcomes. You’ll learn how lower, talk-friendly doses (psycholytic) support emotional processing in real time, while higher, dissociative doses (psychedelic) offer deeper access to the unconscious. We discuss the therapeutic pros and cons of each approach, and how they can be used intentionally based on clinical goals. In the second half, we shine a light on a growing concern in ketamine treatment: the overuse of anti-anxiety medications (like benzodiazepines) in IV ketamine clinics when clients feel distressed. Through the lens of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we explore the concept of experiential avoidance—how trying to numb discomfort can actually block healing—and why some of the most difficult moments in therapy are also the most meaningful.Come visit our website for more information: Innerbloom

They reliably produce a unique state of mind in which you see visions and hear voices. You may lose awareness of your body while your consciousness travels through deep outer—or inner—space. You may feel almost unbearable ecstasy, terror, or both—or nothing at all" -Dr. Strassman Get a copy of his new book today! The Darker Side of Psychedelics: Response to NY Magazine's Cover Story podcast (Part 4)

Send us Fan MailPart 4 of our conversation continued...For those of you who don’t know, New York Magazine's Cover Story published a podcast series called 'Power Trip’ looking into the dark side of psychedelic therapy.  The podcast highlights various traumatic experiences that have occurred under the umbrella of psychedelic therapy.  One woman tells of the abuse she experienced by her therapist during the MAPS MDMA trials for PTSD.  The Cover Story podcast additionally went on to paint a pretty dark picture of psychedelic therapies and the research being done in this work.  Our podcast here with 'The Psychedelic Psychiatrist' takes a look at what was discussed and tries to offer a more balanced perspective compared to what was portrayed by the Cover Story creators.  Before going any further we wanted to make the following very clear: we have the utmost respect to the people in this series who shared extremely traumatic and vulnerable moments, and in no way invalidate their experience nor offer any excuses for what happened to them.  Their stories should be known and we thank them for bringing light to the matter. There are legitimate concerns and dangers when working with these medicines, we will address these while offering a more widened view on the topic.  Due to the importance of this topic we thought it would be of service to enlist some help from a colleague in the psychedelic medicine field.
