The Pushkin Library

In this quiet library, the voices of old tales are awakened once more. Here are gathered verse and story, passion and caprice, sorrow, wit, and that fleeting music of the human heart which neither time nor dust can wholly silence. The Pushkin Library offers these works entire, unabridged, and alive again for the listening ear.

The Daughter of the Commandant Chapter 2 - The Guide

In which a traveller, beset by a fierce steppe snowstorm and accompanied by his taciturn servant, is guided to shelter by a mysterious and wily Cossack fellow who soon reveals a rough camaraderie steeped in local slang and lore. Upon reaching Orenburg, the traveller is introduced to a stern yet kindly old General who, after reading a familiar letter, dispatches him to serve at a remote frontier fort, setting the stage for a new chapter in his life.

  2. 3

The Daughter of the Commandant Chapter 1 - Sergeant of the Guards

In which a young gentleman of noble birth bids farewell to the comforts of home and the frivolities of childhood education to begin his military service, encountering both the stern discipline of his father and the misguided indulgences of new acquaintances. The narrative gently chronicles his first foray into the wider world, imbued with youthful missteps and the tender yet firm boundaries of loyalty and honour.
