The Rissington Podcast
by Jon Hicks
John Oxton-King and Jon Hicks started broadcasting from their ex-RAF base office in Upper Rissington in 2007. Conceived as a web-geek version of Gardeners Question Time! We also have regular(ish) spots - housekeeping, font of the week and UX technique of the week. 'Week' is obviously a very loose term here.

You'd be good at glassblowing!
We recorded this episode just after the UK General Election in December 2019, so our moods were a little sombre. Answering your lovely questions helped us forget all that though! We knew we wouldn't get it edited before Christmas, so this is "The New Year" episode.

If you see someone without a smile
Two days, two dinners and two locations later, this time we cover design systems, UX science, Greggs sausage rolls, the future of the web and biscuits.

22: Bonus - Mental health
We recorded lots of little experimental sections for episode 22 to see if anything stuck. Many of them probably won't see the light of day but we did just want to share a bit where we talk about mental health issues.

It's bulb time!
Attempts to improve the audio this time but still a few plosives in places. Pop! It's all the usual gubbings: Housekeeping; Font of the Week; UX Technique of the Week and of course Listener Questions. If we didn't answer yours this time, we'll probably get to it next time.

Housekeeping & warming up after a 10 year break
10 years of housekeeping is discussed, whilst John OK fails to concentrate on anything but the recording process and practicing his heavy breathing routine. Fortunately Mr. Hicks holds it all together, consummate professional that he is. That is right until the end when Jon (short for Jonathan) makes a revelation that will rock the design industry to its very core. Clickbait? You betcha!

Gearing up to record Season Two after a 10 year break!

Stupidly, we recorded this one when we were both knackered, and it shows. It’s the longest we’ve done yet, and we’ve had to edit it to within an inch of it’s life to make it vaguely listenable! Anyway, for better or for worse, here’s episode 20!

Xmas Special - 2008
We wish you a merry festive period and a satisfactorily refreshing New Year! Can you spot all 3 subtle earworms in this podcast?

After the 3rd recording attempt, we’ve sorted out our recording problems, and we’re back with a backlog-clearing, hour long marathon!

Recorded on the 7th July, and finally edited and released! Hopefully, we’ll record a new one next week…

Summer break is over and we’ve finally had a chance to edit a show recorded back in June! We were blessed with plenty of flying aircraft noise in this episode, so it all sounds nice and authentic. Also I forgot to do the levels on this one, but never mind, I’m sure you’ll cope!

Being the episode where all 4 of us in Team Rissington share 2 mics. We also implement a swear-box, with donations going to our breakfast baps and Quake Aid Casserole.

The Texpattern appreciation episode or, if you prefer, the diss Paul Boag episode.

The outtakes are in episode. In an attempt to streamline the process and get more episodes out more often we are experimenting with no editing. We’ve also ditched the .m4a version for the time being, hurrah!

Recorded weeks ago, but finally edited!

This show was recorded back in February, but only now have we had the chance to edit it and get it out. This one features Mr Clayson more, which is a joy to behold.

The links for this week’s show include an interesting Gelaskins one of which is now stuck to John Oxton’s MacBook.

Relax, we’re still podcasting! Just because we don’t knock them out in our sleep like Mr Boag, doesn’t mean we’ve stopped. Quality not quantity folks! Anyway, herewith another broadcast from the Rissington HQ.

Back at you with another questions-only episode. Also we have a new website n’shit, replete with desktop and iphone wallpaper of the 1940’s poster style site design. Questions answered this time around include “Lord of the Rings or Star Wars”, “Free-Pitching” and the oh-so regular “Where is my hash key”. We will also be launching a campaign to make Alun Rowe Mayor of Thame shortly.

A quicker, slimmer, episode this month – no extras, just the questions! We’re busy working on a ‘proper’ Rissington Podcast site (as well as all the stuff that pays of course), so we’ll keep this post short. In the edit, we managed to remove the actual question regarding IE6, which was “When can we start ignoring IE6?”. We’re just trying to keep you on your toes.

Three - the Radiohead (I wish I was) special
With the imminent release tomorrow of ‘In Rainbows’, the new album by Radiohead, the Rissingtion Podcast hosts are too excited for words. Well, OK, we mananged a few of them – we ask just one question this week: “Discbox or Download?”. We also talk to David Emery, web boffin at the Beggars Group about life as a web designer in the music industry. David’s sites include the promo for Thom Yorke’s The Eraser, making him the ideal chap to be talking to!

Two - The Difficult Second Episode
After a suprisingly successful week, reaching #3 in the iTunes Technology podcast chart, and #82 in the overall podcast chart, it’s safe to say the pressure is bloody on! Then there were the plaudits from that Mr Boag on his Podcast! So, here is the ‘difficult second episode’ (like the difficult second album).

One
After the lovely warm reception to the Pilot Episode, we present the first ‘proper’ episode! It looks like we’re now committing ourselves to doing this! As well as the usual round of listeners questions (including The Rissington ‘underground hospital’ and choosing web-safe cheeses), we attempt another joke from the RAF Magazine ‘Air Mail’, and the Featured Font is P22’s ‘Underground Pro‘. Keep the questions coming in!

The Pilot Episode
In the inaugural podcast, listeners questions come courtesy of members of a secret society founded in the 1920s, we attempt our first joke provided by the RAF, and the featured typeface is the elegant Mostra. It’s the first go, so be easy on us!
