EP:100 I MAKE TOYS (Jamie Ricottone)
Jamie Ricottone is a Project Designer at Spin Master Ltd (Paw Patrol/Kinetic Sand/Air Hogs to name a few), and recently became the Design Lead on the wildly successful PRIMAL HATCH toy line. If you knew my cousin, you would know that this is a full circle story. I’ll explain..Jamie was a little boy infatuated with the dinosaur. He spent literally years walking, eating, growling, and stalking like a velociraptor; not unlike a method actor inhabiting a reptile. It was cute and unnerving all at once. Safe to say…Jurassic Park had left its mark. So, when we heard he was developing a line of dinosaur toys that can hatch from an egg in real-time, we were taken with the serendipity of it all. The PRIMAL HATCH project was a big, cross-continent undertaking, and upon its release, received a wave of fanfare and critical acclaim, including two prestigious toy awards equivalent to the Academy Awards: Action Figure of the Year 2025Overall Toy of the year 2025Best part of all? The Jurassic World franchise green-lit the use of its official branding to adorn the project. A surreal and defining moment for Jamie to say the least. Some kids meet their hero’s, and some turn them into toys. Luv you Cuz.

EP:99 MAN OF GOD. OCCASIONAL COMIC. (Kevin Makins)
I must’ve sat down twenty times to write this synopsis, and Im still having a hell of a time making it make sense. Kevin Makins is a little bit too hard to quantify...so I’m gonna tell you to just take a listen. I will say this though, Kevin will use any means necessary to put his message out into the world. He has used comedy, philanthropy, and high art to make us think, and reconsider our positions on things. No small feat. And, perhaps my favourite thing about him, is that he is an extremely deep and critical thinker, yet manages to do so with an optimistic smile. So who is he!?He is a Pastor — a “man of the cloth”. But, from what I’ve gathered, Kevin Makins is more like a Joseph in his Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. Thanks Kev.

EP:98 ARTIST (Alexander Notarangelo)
When I approached Alexander Notarangelo to be a guest on this platform, he said yes, followed by this caveat:“So, just so we’re on the same page, I am not a well liked artist in the city…”He was giving me an out, which was thoughtful, but I was not having it. I wanted to hear his story, because honestly, I’d heard about him perhaps more than I’d beheld his work. He was like a talented rumour within the city of Hamilton, Ontario. That being said, the art work I did see was remarkable and had a ferocity to it, just like him. So, local art community comment section be damned…we were doing the interview. Jump to the convo:What can I say? He’s gentleman; full of honesty, self-reflection, and a type of humility underpinned by informed opinion. It was refreshing. I think people might be missing the point on Alexander. He’s simply a disciple of hard work, owns some strong opinions, and seems to have an allergy to those who don’t take art seriously. I guess that kind of passion burns too hot for some. That said….Pursuing art can be a lonely, long-suffering, and lean experience. But, when you talk with a guy like Alexander, he never complains about that. He makes you feel the colour and warmth in all of it. Like artists do. Enjoy.

EP:97 SIX FOOT ENERGY (Tania LaCaria)
Hamilton, Ontario is like a high school hallway…especially within the arts/hospitality/maker space. We all move through the same orbit, waving at each other on the way to class, but never really landing at a locker for a good convo or a cafeteria hang. We all kinda know each other, and we all kinda don’t. Jump to this interview:Tania LaCaria is the perfect example of that “cool kid” I always bumped into, but never knew her story. And frankly, I wanted to, as I’ve been watching it evolve and glow these past ten years with great interest. Thankfully, I have a podcast and was able to hear the story of how she’s become the woman and artist that she is today. She is as fierce as she is vulnerable, and her willingness to “go there” made this conversation EASY, and I think it’ll resonate with many of you. Thank you Tania, for letting me sit at the cool kid table.

EP:96 (Clare Chiappetta)
When you have a shared experience with another person, a friendship isn’t far behind. Somehow, there is a safety and muscle memory when two people have felt the world in the same way. Cue Clare Chiappetta…Like me, Clare wrestled with obesity, body image, building a brave face, and living as a hostage in unwanted skin. We both underwent bariatric surgery, lost the weight, and set out on our respective journeys to reclaim the missing pieces. Clare has a fantastic perspective and attitude toward her past, present, and future. I think that’s partly why I feel so comfortable sharing my own story with her…because she’s hopeful. I am very hard on my self. Many times I feel like I’m renting a new body, and at any moment, someone can just call it in and take it all back. There’s a lot of work left to do in this head and heart of mine…Clare has gone ahead of me in many ways, and I’ve found myself following her lead, and I think you’ll hear that in this interview. Needless to say, I’m thankful for Clare. If you’re wrestling with YOU, and feel like you can’t get out from underneath your situation, you might find this chat helpful. I know I did. Thanks Clare. Enjoy

EP:94 SEARCHING FOR SELF (Bethany Kenyon)
I’ve had a hard time writing a synopsis for this episode, because in a way..I don’t feel like I’m supposed to. When someone shares their story the way Bethany Kenyon did with me, it just doesn’t need any help. So, I won’t be adding any of my words to hers.If you want an example of honesty, and courageous story telling - this is the interview, and you just need to listen. I will say this..Bethany is doing what all good artists should be doing: searching for self, telling the truth, and digging a little deeper. Enjoy.

EP:93 THE RISE & SHINE OF NICOLE RAE
Nicole Rae is one of those people that when you meet her, you immediately want to join her club. She is gracious, kind, and very, very easy company. I have been watching her sip latte’s, and sit at some of the areas finest tables these last couple years (Instagram)….and, as luck would have it, I had the chance to have her at my own table and hear her story. We only had an hour to chat, but we poured over her humble beginnings as a content creator, and how today, she is breaking into deep, and beautiful new ground. Her new series “Little Chats” is wildly charming and oozes a kind of mellow-yellow cool, and I love it. Her content is evolving, and I expect her cool-kid- club will continue to grow. Enjoy

EP:92 THE KORU JOURNEY (Becky & Sarah)
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands but seeing with new eyes." - Marcel Proust I’ve known Becky Sutherland for the better part of ten years. The woman she is today, is worlds apart from the girl that I first met.She has been on an odyssey of self discovery, and she, along with her sister Sarah, are helping others to do the same. More on that in the interview….Becky & Sarah bravely walked me through their shared journey of pain, healing, growth, reinvention, and reclaiming their ancestral roots & genetic memory. They are adventurers; time-travellers in pursuit of where they’ve been, and bringing the best parts of their generational story into the future. Take a listen.

EP:91 JUNQ MAGAZINE (Stephanie Rico & Connor Marquis-Young)
Stephanie Rico & Connor Marquis-Young have birthed a beautiful thing, and it’s JUNQ. An independent literary magazine gathering works of writers, poets, and wild-eyed makers. It is beautiful, very cool, and above all else, a love letter to the tactile experience of print. Take a listen.

EP:90 SOBER (Krys)
Walking away is never easy. Losing a piece of you….whatever it is, will cost its pound of flesh. Some retreat while they recover, and others do what Krys has done; pressing record and documenting the journey on social media. Alcohol. Drugs. Food. Whatever the habit, people like Krys are letting us all know….we are not alone. Take a listen.

EP:89 (The 9 Lives of Jeremy Potvin)
Bruce Lee famously said, “Be like water”. Go with the flow. Take the many forms, and always be moving. This is Jeremy Potvin…He is a masterclass in the art of reinvention, and his current costume change is the one that will likely stick…It looks good on him, and what he’s doing is delicious. Take a listen.

EP:88 (JAY PERRY)
I heard about Jay Perry far before I ever met him. For a while he was a philanthropic rumour; a guy doing good deeds, and a local figure pushing noble causes up big hills. Word on the street was, he was a good guy. After this interview, I can confirm that the reports are all true. Jay is refreshingly candid & honest; with a humility that somehow comes off as courageous….one of his many super powers. When you press play, you’ll see what I mean. This was one of my favourite interviews to date, perhaps because it left me challenged and convinced of two things:1 - it is POSSIBLE to help build a wonderful world.2- goodness is contagious.Thx J. #spotifypodcast #applepodcast #photography #music #art #interview #charity #philanthropy #children #youth #hope

EP:87 THE SCRIBE (Ellie Di Julio)
I knew Ellie Di Julio was a writer. But, I didn’t know how GOOD of a writer until this last month. She’s damn good. Her recent release, “The Order & The Way” is more than a mere novel. It is a noble cause, a passion project, and a gift. Our friend Phil Owen dreamt the idea for the book, hoped on completing it, and then he got really sick.Enter Ellie…She came to the hospital, sat bedside with Phil and took notes. They imagineered, partnered and made plans to carry the book to completion; as it became clear, Phil wouldn’t be with us for the finish. He finished a different kind of race…Ellie carried Phil’s idea to the finish line, churned it into an excellent read, and most importantly, kept him alive within its pages. My friends wrote a great book together. Not many people can say that. Take a listen. EP:86 PEARL MORISSETTE (Chef Eric Robertson & Chef Daniel Hadida
Poised in the upper room of a cubist, flat black barn, lives Pearl Morissette…one of Canada’s premiere dining destinations, and recent recipient of the precious Michelin star. This is where you go to experience food that moves you and your palate. But…it is so much more than that. Pearl Morissette is an ecosystem. A patch of land that gives up its crops, and co-conspires with the chefs on what their expectant guests will eat each day. They are committed and SERIOUS about what they do…For example, their head gardener lives in a cottage on the property. This is how high the stakes are. I sat with co-owners/chefs Daniel Hadida & Eric Robertson and heard the story that began with a skeleton crew of helping hands, a mom delivering produce (until they could grow their own), and a really ambitious, yet simple idea:Grow good food. EP:83 WIDOW (Jessica Owen)
When my friend Phil was diagnosed with cancer, I had planned to conduct an interview with him. A type of time capsule holding his voice & story for the loved ones left behind. We knew that, whether he lived or died…it had to be accomplished. We made a plan and set the date. But, it never happened. He was gone only twelve days later. Throughout that hurricane called cancer, there was an ever-present and unmoveable figure always by Phil’s side; his beautiful wife Jessica. She was there for all of it. Even the last breath. She is now the author of Phil’s story, and her part to play within it is just as moving and powerful. It was Jess that came to me with the request to share, and I was more than happy to oblige. Jessica: Silent warrior. Loyal mother. Peace personified. I asked her this question:“Are you still married?“Yes. I still wear my ring. I am still married. I am still in love with Phil”Please listen to this human story, share it, and then go tell someone you love them. P.S. EP:82 PETER ELKAS
Peter Elkas has a unique, lived-in feel about him. A cross between ease and a kind of reclined wisdom. It’s how he carries himself, tells a story, and especially, how he writes a song (as you’ll hear in this interview/performance.) You get the sense that he has lived a hundred lives…and in many ways, he has. If you know good Canadian music, you’ll know Peter Elkas. If you don’t, I can guarantee your favourite musicians do. He’s friends with all of them. EP:80 HORROR, DEATH, & HUMANS (Dr. Mark Miller)
Dr. Mark Miller returns to blow up my mind, in a twofold discussion highlighting: 1. the allure and benefit of watching horror movies 2. understanding, embracing, and leaning into the eventuality & nature of death This interview was originally recorded weeks ago, and I am still thinking about it. I know you will too. Take a listen. Here’s Marks CV: Philosopher. Cognitive Scientist. Happiness Aficionado. As a philosopher of cognition I apply the tools of conceptual analysis and theoretical model building to answer fundamental questions about human cognition - about the way that human beings think. My research investigates the implications of a leading new perspective on cognition, which conceptualizes the mind as an engine of knowledge-driven predictions. I work to integrate this body of work with the so called “4E cognition” view, which emphasizes the role of embodied and environmental processes in constituting what we call mind. Today, I am exploring how these same developments in cognitive neuroscience may help us gain a clearer understanding of the impact that our increasingly technologically-mediated world has on our happiness and well-being. I am developing new perspectives on contemporary discussions in domains such as human-computer interaction and socio-technical systems, with a specific emphasis on human flourishing. #interview #podcast #applepodcast #spotifypodcast #university #horrorfilms #death #professor #philosophy #cognitivescience #happiness

EP:79 WASTËD ŸØVTH (Jesse Warren)
Jesse Warren, aka “WASTËD ŸØVTH” is the first guest to reach out to me wanting to share their story. This isn’t something I do, as I handle the vetting & inviting…and I’m leery of anyone telling me why they should be a guest on the platform. BUT, this brief message in my inbox made me change my mind, take a chance, and get Jesse at my table: “Hey man, I have a real story to tell. I would love to do something with you guys. I was born on tour and didn’t sleep in a crib until I was one years old. That’s just the start.” He had my attention… With nothing else to go on, we met, shook hands and pressed record. EP:78 SURVIVOR (w/ Rachel Shuttlesworth)
In “What Sarah Said” Death Cab For Cutie perfectly says: Love is watching someone die. Its a devastating thought. And it is true. I did that very thing this year. And I can’t do it again. Cancer. The bully. The bastard. The thief. It took my close friend Phil, and it made plans to steal my best friend Rachel. However, after a two year dance with the disease, I’m happy to report that she has deftly kicked cancer in its crooked, stinking teeth. A hell of a victory that left her missing a spleen, parts of her diaphragm, and a wicked vertical scar that will stop anyone in their tracks. But, she is alive, grateful, and forever changed. A journey beginning with a tumour the size of a grapefruit concludes with a Rachel that is wiser, softer, and stronger than she’s ever been. I love her, and I am proud of her. EP:77 BILLY ROGERS (X Night #3)
I don’t wanna give a lot away with this one. You should discover the story like we did when this was recorded…in real time, up close, and personal. It’s a worthy listen. However, I will share this: One of my favourite moments chatting with Billy, actually took place over dinner. We were talking music, and of course, The Beatles topic came up. I casually asked him the age-old question: ME: “So, are you a John guy, or a Paul guy?” BILLY: “I’m actually a George guy….” A good answer. I knew then, that I was in for a great interview. EP:75 CHEF JOHN FORCIER
Work Hard. Stay humble. A saying thrown around so much, it has become a bumper sticker, rather than a mantra. But, there are people that do it for real….Chef John Forcier is one of them. Birthed out of one of Canadas greatest restaurants (CANOE), John came to Hamilton, and helped build some of the coolest and most relevant hospitality entities in Ontario. If you’ve tasted anything at The French, Aberdeen Tavern, The Diplomat, or anything to do with Equal Parts Hospitality, Chef Forcier was the true north that helped shape that experience. His work is charming, clean, refined, and ALWAYS moving forward. I see leaps and evolutions regularly on his plates and his menus should make any gourmand in Hamilton proud. Thankfully, his relentless and beautiful hard work has helped us all find a seat at the table. Thank you Chef, for making Hamilton so delicious. EP:74 VANESSA HEINS
It took two years for Vanessa Heins and I to make this interview happen. There was a global pandemic, a cross-province change of address, loss, healing, work, and LIFE. Many times I wanted to leave her alone and stop pursuing the interview, but Vanessa always kept the door open and promised that when the time was right, she’d reach out. And she did… Her photographic work is everywhere; capturing some of the world’s most prolific artists, and though I’d love to name drop her list of major muses…I won’t, because I know that’s something Vanessa would never do. She is still, kind, collected, honest, and can capture a perfect moment with apparent ease, as she is herself, an artist. At the time of this episode going live, Vanessa will be on tour across Canada with City and Colour. I dropped a name… Enjoy. #photography #picture #Rollingstonemagazine #interview #podcast #spotifypodcast #applepodcast #aof #cityandcolour #strombo #carlyraejepesen

EP:73 DAY OF CREATIVE//FUCK UP NIGHTS (Anna Di Carlo)
Anna Di Carlo is a good human. The more time I spend with her, the more I am convinced of this. I have seen her in action with DAY OF CREATIVE (her event planning outfit specializing in creative design & social engagement), and she is GOOD at what she does. If you wanna throw a soirée and look slick doing it…call Anna. I loved working with her, and I hope to do so on the regular. Perhaps my favourite thing she’s behind is her passion project, FUCK UP NIGHTS HAMILTON. A platform for business people and creatives to share their failures, blunders, and lessons in front of a live audience. I spoke at one of these, as I have a PhD in f’ing up….and it was a humbling experience getting real about me and my shortcoming’s. Anna has figured out that the more honest we are about the losses, the better chance we have at finding the wins. Genius. Anna makes room for people. She is a host, and a giver. She is also, and equally strong, unable to put up with bullshit, and very direct….a super power I find very, very refreshing. She smiles with her eyes. Volunteers at an animal shelter. Has a big heart. Owns a dog named Dorito, and is the kind of person I wanted to sit down and chat with. So that’s what we did. EP:72 SERVIETTE MAGAZINE (Max Meighen)
This interview was planned almost two years ago, but on my way to Toronto to chat with Max Meighen of Serviette Magazine, my engine blew, and I was forced to cancel. Not a great first impression… Thankfully, he said yes to a “re-do”, allowing me to sneak one last, and long overdue interview before the year rolled over. We connected at his impressive AVLING BREWERY & KITCHEN on Queen St E; a space dedicated to creative sustainability, craftsmanship, and hospitality. If you can get there, GO. However, it is Max’s side hustle that I am here for….his magazine. “The eyes eat first” Serviette is a delicious publication. Full of images that move you and make one wanna jump in and partake. Yes, it has a beautiful face, but it has a brain and soul that grabs the reader and makes them go deeper. Within its pages is a noble effort to look at food beyond the many trends, enjoyment and consumption. The magazine is as cerebral, as it is delicious. Max has built something special with this periodical, and in time, it may become his greatest work. He’s at the beginning of his publishing efforts, but I expect big things for him and Serviette. This is a magazine that you can safely judge by its stunning covers, as it is beautiful inside and out. EP:71 LTtheMONK
LTtheMonk is a musical BIG BANG. Kinda like a street party, where all the factions find common ground and have a really good time. His sound is familiar, yet “new” in the best way, and it is a welcome shift from the current hip-hop/rap norms. LT is hyper intelligent, owns a healthy ego AND a humility that draws you in the second he starts to speak….somehow, he makes these two traits find a nice tight harmony. He is a young man who knows where he’s been, and he very clearly knows where he is going. All the great ones do, and I can tell you….the greatness in him will continue to get greater. I’m a believer. This interview was more than questions and answers. It was a genuine connection that left me content and inspired; like any good conversation should. I’m grateful for the chance to chat with LT at this point in his career, because soon…..serious success, fan-fare, and gate-keepers will surround him, making it too hard to get in. I snuck through, right in the nick of time. Enjoy. #applepodcast #spotifypodcast #interview #hiphop #rap #dance #poet #music #JayZ #Kanye #SteelyDan

EP:70 MIKE TREBILCOCK of THE KILLJOYS
I was born in the 70’s, grew up in the 80’s, and cut my teeth as a musician in the 90’s. I experienced the Grunge/Alt-Rock movement first hand, and it CHANGED me. It was a paradigm shift, a sea change, and it shaped the writer/player that I am today. I am forever grateful. Seattle was the hotbed, but my heroes lived elsewhere, like Chicago (The Smashing Pumpkins) , U.K. (too many to mention), and here at home, in Canada. If you were around for it, you’d agree that the 90’s was GOOD to Canadian music. And Canadian music was good to the world (Celine/Alanis/Shania). Every province had bands worth talking about, and most major cities had a buzzy music scene worth exploring. On our turf (Hamilton), we had Junkhouse and The Killjoys. Arguably, the two most obvious outfits making a good noise at that time; helping crank the nations neck toward our little patch of land. The Killjoys. I liked them. They had hooks for days, and a lo-fi, power pop thing that I really dug. Recently, I had the honour of chatting with frontman Mike Trebilcock in front of a live audience. He told his story, sang some songs, and made a room full of strangers laugh and listen. He in fact, made some new fans…. It was special and surreal, because it wasn’t Much Music making The Killjoys come to life. It was Mike, in the flesh, singing the songs from our youth. I won’t forget it. This was recorded live in Hamilton, on November 8th at the @blindbellwether during our second @x.times.x gathering. A thousand thank you’s to @mike_trebilcock for saying yes and bringing the 90’s to our little room. EP:69 UNFOLD (Brooke Henshall)
When you meet Brooke Henshall, you almost immediately wanna join her club. That’s the truth…. She owns a tangible, gentle stillness that is calming, all the while making you feel seen…even in a busy coffee shop (she’s a barista at Sunday Blooms in Guelph). Brooke is a special kind of special, and it is obvious she is GOING somewhere. I really wanna stick around and see where it all goes…because I know it’s going to be significant. This is why this interview is happening. That’s it. It’s that simple. Sometimes, you just want to be around the start of something exceptional. Like Brooke. EP:68 L.A. WEST
I’ve only known L.A. West since late spring of this year. However, I know her enough to say this: Meeting her was like a flash-bang. An immediate connection, giving way to a very fast friendship. Out of the gate we agreed on so much, and we could disagree on things as easily as the easy stuff. She is a creative gypsy, an old soul, and uniquely holds an aura of vintage charm and mystery. She is a Fleetwood Mac song…on vinyl. L.A. is tough, but she owns a gentle side that has a wild story to tell, and that is exactly what this interview is all about. Origins. Pain. Surviving. Learning. Creating. All the ingredients needed to be the kind of creative maker & shaker like L.A. West. Bottom line….she’s just totally cool, and she’s my pal. EP:67 OPERA (Camila Montefusco)
Camila Montefusco is a Mezzo-Soprano. An opera singer. A rare breed with the ability to throw their voice, and fill a space like a weather system. She herself, is a musical instrument… When we first met for our interview, I was immediately taken aback by her poise and confidence. So much so, that I found it unnerving. Somehow, I felt exposed being near someone with that kind of silent and still strength. Yet, she is as sweet and genuine, as she is strong. Like her voice… Speak softly and carry a big stick; as they say. Camila’s story is full of love, family, cultural pride and a few dramatic twists thrown into the plot: Such as working as a professional violinist, and falling in love with another master….singing. As she puts it, “the violin is beautiful, but vocalists have words”. I think many of you, like myself, will rethink opera after hearing this chat. Enjoy. #opera #singing #theatre #performance #violin #puccini #mozart #brazil

EP:66 GRAPHIC. ART. (Joel Malkin)
Joel Malkin does not like to talk about himself…he seems to squirm at the notion. A self-effacing gentleman, that is also really, really talented. A kind of conundrum for a guy trying to fly under the praise radar. I came across his graphic design & illustration work via Instagram, and I immediately wanted to hire him. For now however, I’ll have to settle for an interview with the man himself. His work is associated with some of the coolest restaurants, and business accounts in Canada…and there is no doubt that in time, Joel’s branding & design will become iconic. With clients like: Joe Beef, Liverpool House, Prime Seafood Palace, Willibald Farm Distillery & Brewery, Beba, Blue Goose Farm, Vin Papillon. It could be easy to mistake a list like this for name-dropping….but it’s really just a killer résumé. Joel has it in spades. Maybe if I’m lucky, I can get him to help me look cool too. EP:65 PERMANENCE OF INK (Michael Byers)
When Michael Byers hung out at my cafe, he was always alone. Solitary. Peaceful. Hemmed in by coffee, a sketch book, and a pen….he was the consummate artist at work. I got to know him, and was regularly struck by his ability to turn those blank pages into something lived in, and alive. He is a lovely artist, and he has a style uniquely his own. I’d recognize it anywhere. Michael’s story is a good one; full of great mentors, and moments that inspired even me when hearing the tales. He is honest and immediate in his ability to share…and I’m so very grateful for that. He allowed me in, and we crushed two hours talking in no time. He, like the rest of us, is a human trying to get better, learn, grow, and grasp gratitude while scribbling and sketching along the way. EP:64 JACKLYN BARBER
There is deep and abiding empathy beating within Jacklyn Barber. The lens in which she views and experiences the world, is a gift that can capture the “moments” among the endless minutes of a day. Jacklyn is a photographer, but it’s more than that. She’s a collector. A curator of images that are alive; making you feel as though you’re looking at a memory….that’s how I feel anyway. Take a gander at her work, and I believe you will too. This was an easy conversation. It moved down many alleys and streets, but we got to where we were wanting to go, so to speak. It was actually a perfectly unplanned talk. There are photographers, and then there’s Jacklyn Barber. She’s all of us, all those years ago when we had wonder…collecting fireflies in the dark, and showing us the glow. #photography #spotifypodcast #applepodcast #art #film #interview

EP:63 THE UGLY FUN (JEREMY MACFARLANE)
The Ugly Fun. A perfect band name. As clever and catchy as the music itself. Jeremy MacFarlane is the architect of this project, and he understands acutely how to shape a melody that’ll make you stop and listen. I did. He is a maker and multi-dimensional creative, and his artistic footprint seems to know no bounds, as music is only one of the many pursuits he busies himself with. Jeremys work turns my head, and I wanted to know more. So we set a date, and pressed record. Our interview was quick, but it contains the takeaways needed to understand the heart and origin story of The Ugly Fun. The following interview was recorded live on Thursday, June 8th, 2023 in front of a captive audience of thirty people; concluding with Jeremy performing two originals in a room full of open hearts and ears. This was a truly special event, and it was a first for a new collaborative project launched on this very night (more to come on that soon). Take a listen and enjoy. #interview #art #music #singersongwriter #applepodcast #spotifypodcast #photography #poetry @theuglyfun @westlaimage @x.times.x @bellwetherhouse @blindbellwether @stew86stew @the_rocky_talky_podcast

EP:62 OUR LOSS (Annie Horton)
Grief. Loss. Death. Heartbreak. Words and emotions that I dread, and go to great lengths to protect myself from. Yet, despite all of my efforts, I cannot outrun this inheritance of the human condition. All of us get scathed…but some, it seems, have been given a double portion. Annie Horton has experienced a cascading of loss these recent years, and her story of grief seems surreal and too much for anyone to bare, but somehow, she tells her tale with a compelling poise and grace. She is a Judo move. A courageous soul absorbing hardship, and using its own violent force against itself. In other words…she’s leaned into the pain, and has learned from it. Now, through her grief support project OUR LOSS, Annie is a guiding light and pathfinder to those lost in pain and searching for a way through. Take a listen.

EP:61 THE MICHELIN MAN (Chef Rob Rossi)
In the fall of 2022, Canada was historically included in The MICHELIN Guide, which is to many, the final word on the best restaurants on the planet. If awarded a much-lauded MICHELIN star, an establishment will join a very small, and very elite group of hospitality heavy weights. Chef Rob Rossi (Osteria Giulia/Giulietta) knows of this intimately, as he and his team were recently awarded a prestigious star. After my time with him, I understand why. Chef Rossi has an incredibly warm, and available presence about him, and it made me feel immediately at home. It was humbling, and it made room for a lovely conversation. He may be a gifted cook, but he is an even better host. His world is slick, delicious, and bedazzled with stars….yet, I find no ego in him. Just a genuine and honest hospitality. This must be why The MICHELIN Guide came knocking on his door. Enjoy. #gourmet #chef #MichelinStar #food #Toronto #canada #TopChef #Italian #interview #spotifypodcast #applepodcast

What do you get when you mix a full time firefighter, a gifted guitarist, and a vibrant visual artist? EP:59 POLARITY TATTOO STUDIO (Aaron Hopman)
Aaron Hopman is chill. He is a father, a husband, an exceptional artist, and the proud owner of Polarity Tattoo Studio. My plan for this interview was to chat with him about tattoo culture, but our time together turned into an honest talk about life, philosophy, lessons learned, and being a good human. You’ll pick up real quick, like I did, that when Aaron says something…he means it. Kinda like his work. Black & white. Clean. Permanent. Enjoy. #tattoo #ink #tattooshop #art #realism #flash #interview #applepodcast #spotifypodcast

EP:58 THE LAUNDRY DESIGN WORKS
“The Laundry Design Works is a multidisciplinary design and concept studio that creates strategies for brands, products, and spaces.” This is putting it modestly… What they really are is a magic machine. A Wonka factory that takes an existing “thing” and transforms it into something extraordinary. If the customer was a shoe, then the Laundry would be the NIKE swoosh. They’re work is unmistakable, it makes you look, and it makes the customer look really good. Erin McCluskey & Paul McGrath are two of the four owners at The Laundry Design Works, and they join me to chat about inspiration, the power of good design, and how travel helps them shape their creative process. EP:57 NATALIE SEXTON
Natalie Sexton has a seriously impressive resume in television and social media (CHCH/CTV/The Marilyn Denis Show/ Hamilton Tiger-Cats). She is everywhere, and she is very good at what she does. At first glance, her sphere and brand is poised and playful. Fashion-forward and full of colour. But, it’s when you talk with Natalie…that things start to pull into focus. There is a deep strength in her and it is paired with an abiding ease that makes for a welcoming and honest conversation…and thankfully, that is exactly what we had. I hope you listen to this interview because Natalie’s story is one of encouragement, overcoming, patience, reinvention, and integrity. Something all of us need to be exposed to. Her colours pop, but they go real deep too. Enjoy. #applepodcast #spotifypodcast #interview #fashion #beauty #influencer #style #fighter

EP:56 KEVIN DREW (Broken Social Scene)
I met Kevin while tending bar at Dark Horse Espresso in Toronto over ten years ago. He became a regular. I became a fan of his band, Broken Social Scene. He is a beautiful soul, and a generous heart. He was the first person I asked to come on when I started the podcast, and I knew it was a serious long shot. Yet, he replied, “I’m in…let’s do it”. After 3 sold out nights in Hamilton, Kev hailed an Uber, showed up tired, sat at my dining room table and we had a conversation. This interview was two and a half years in the making…and it was worth every near miss, pushed date, and pivot. My heart is full. Thank you Kevin. EP:55 THE OSCARS (Retrospective w/ Andreana Zerafa)
I am NOT a film critic…but I love film, and have been known to be mildly opinionated… Same as my guest, Andreana Zerafa. Dre and I team up to pour over 2022’s Best Picture nominees and share our thoughts, criticisms, and praises for the films on offer at this years Academy Awards. This is a fun chat with an old friend, and we are very pleased to offer the “hot take” that no one asked for. EP:54 STEVE KULAKOWSKY
Steve Kulakowsky & Core Urban Inc. helped set the stage and create space for Hamiltons historic wave of entrepreneurs, pioneers, and new locals. He and his team reclaimed and re-purposed many of the city’s forgotten buildings; turning little ghost towns into the hot spots and destinations we’ve come to know. He’s a local boy. A hometown believer. A world builder….literally. His efforts are on display throughout our city’s core, and I’m grateful every time I take it in; thankful that his work honours where we’ve been, and ultimately where we, as a city are heading. Steve describes Hamilton as a true field of dreams, and I agree with him. “If you build it, they will come”.

EP:53 CHEF MATTY COWAN (The Heather On Locke)
In 2016, Chef Matty Cowan set a new kind of table in Hamilton, Ontario with his restaurant, The Heather. A small, efficient, yet beautiful space serving only six guests each night. The concept was surprising, the tasting menu was stunning, and the people were eating. His new epicurean space was a tiny world of wonder, and a most excellent addition to the city’s growing food scene. Before I could get there and partake myself, it closed its doors…. Chef Cowan sits with me and talks about his journey to Hamilton, the harrowing experiences that saw The Heather close, and the serendipitous collision that brought it back to life in a new home, on a new street. Take a listen to his story, and then go book a seat at The Heather On Locke. #chef #tastingmenu #hospitality #food #interview #applepodcast #spotifypodcast #hamont

This makes sense. They make beautiful things… Daniel Clark is the head luthier and founder of Cithara, and he shares with me what it’s taken to build a great brand, a lovely guitar, and a product played by some of your favourite acts. EP:51 FIGHTER (DAVID WARD)
David Ward should be dead… A bullet, from a Glock 19 pistol was fired point blank into his head. This was a suicide attempt. Here’s the twist: as David’s finger was pulling on the trigger, a clear and distinct voice spoke to him and uttered three words…”Change the angle”. This mysterious intercession saved his life. The bullet that passed through David’s skull, managed to avoid the precious areas that would have killed him; making him another statistic. Thankfully, fate had another plan. David Ward is a living, breathing miracle. He has a story to tell, and he does just that in this interview. “Wardo” retired as a Sergeant and trained sniper from the Canadian Armed Forces (Army) after nineteen years of service, and multiple tours in Afghanistan. He is a survivor. He is a fighter. This is his story.
