Greg Rucka and I are back in what has become The Mimi and Greg Show since 2019! This episode is jam-packed with comics talk: Lazarus, Batwoman, Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League, The Forged, plus some Superman insight! In typical potpourri fashion, we also discuss grief, resilience, and the problem with insider culture. If you aren’t already subscribed to his newsletter, Front Towards Enemy, do yourself a favor and sign up—it’s free, it’s brilliant, and it’s the perfect way to stay up to date on all things Rucka. For those that don’t already know: Greg Rucka is a New York Times bestselling author of hundreds of comics and nearly two dozen novels. 443. Reality check with MiOsc
MiOsc is back, discussing the reality check needed on the benefits of tai chi vs. what you might be seeing on the internet. You may have seen an influencer online (usually shirtless, usually sporting six-pack abs with veins popping out of his biceps) claiming he got that body from doing a “Tai Chi Walk.” The caption promises that this simple, slow movement is the secret ancient hack to melting belly fat and getting shredded. Reality check. That guy did not get that body from Tai Chi. There are some incredible benefits to tai chi, but six-pack abs aren’t among them. Oscar and I discuss the true benefits of tai chi and the importance of community during turbulent times… like this one. Join us on youtube to watch our musings, and feel free to leave kind comment. 442. Michael Winslow on the importance of sound and Spaceballs!
It’s not every day you get to chat with a voicetramentalist. I’m speaking about none other than actor and comedian Michael Winslow. Michael had breakout performances in the 1980s Police Academy franchise and quickly became known as the Man of 10,000 Sound Effects and was featured in one of my favorite comedies, Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs. Michael and I are old friends. It was so much fun to talk with him about beatboxing, sound as an artform, and the importance of evolving. And in case you are wondering, YES! He does sound effects throughout this conversation. Tune in on Youtube also to watch us in person at the Wah Lum Cultural Center! I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. 440. Matt Fraction on Batman and the Big 5-0!
Matt Fraction is known for his incredible work on titles like “Hawkeye” and “Sex Criminals,” but today, we talk about his new acclaimed Batman run with Jorge Jimenez, and life at 50. It’s always fun to catch up with Matt. I’m especially grateful to hear he is back to full health after a scary brush with covid and hospitalization. We discuss life changes at 50 and I am energized by his joy for writing. If you haven’t started the Batman comic yet, don’t delay. You can also catch up on his ongoing comic Adventureman with Terry Dodson. I’m grateful to share in conversations with friends like Matt and would like to continue on this journey. 439. Coach Dan John on Classic Lessons for Modern Times
In this episode, Dan John and I continue our ongoing Sword in the Stone journey—using this classic book as a guide to examine the world we live in today. What began years ago as a shared exploration of education and mentorship has become something unexpected for me. As a scholar and educator, Dan graciously helps me navigate difficult but important distinctions, including the differences between fascism, communism, and socialism. So yes, he is fulfilling his role as an educator, but beyond that, I value his friendship and time. Dan is a busy man, and I truly appreciate his enthusiasm to discuss this book with me and the philosophical conversations that tangent from the chapter we are exploring. You don’t need to have read the book in order to enjoy this episode, but I highly recommend it! We also speak about the loss of one of the great storytellers of our time, Rob Reiner. I am very grateful to call Dan my friend and love the opportunity to learn from him. I hope you enjoyed the episode. 438. Gene Luen Yang on TMNT, creativity, and the writing process
Gene Luen Yang is an award-winning author and comic creator of American Born Chinese, Lunar New Year Love Story, Superman Smashes the Klan, Shang Chi, and more. He is currently creating Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Books of Clash, check it out if you haven’t yet. I loved catching up with Gene and learning about his writing process and struggles to stay creative amidst the modern world distractions. It’s great to know that despite how prolific he is as a writer and artist, he is human, like the rest of us. Speaking of humanity, we also delve into the pros and cons of AI and what his hopes are for the future of art despite the rise of AI. It is such an honor to talk to guests like Gene. I had the pleasure of sitting down with my bestie, Dr. Mark Cheng, for a conversation that hits close to home for so many of us. 434. Brett Jones on Consistency, Reinvention, and Life
I always enjoy sitting down with Brett Jones, Master Strong First instructor, athletic trainer, and author of many books on strength training. In this episode, we dive into what it takes to stay consistent for the long haul, how to reinvent yourself at 54, and the many types of addiction that plague us. What I value most in my conversations with Brett is his honesty and openness. He doesn’t shy away from the difficult topics, and his perspective reminds us that strength is about much more than physical training. 433. ICYMI Suzy Chan on breast cancer, tai chi and music
October is a busy month: We honor Pink October, Hispanic Heritage and Filipino American History Month. In order to give myself a bit of a mental health break, I am going to be sharing some episodes that you might have missed. This interview was recorded 5 years ago in celebration of my mom’s 70th birthday. We discuss her experience with breast cancer and her healing process. My mom did not opt for chemotherapy, but instead healed with her strong spirit and practiced the ancient art form of tai chi chuan. We of course do not recommend this for everyone, but listen on to hear survival story. We also go back in time and discuss her music career in Jamaica which led her to the United States. I love hearing about her life as a singer on the road, and she shares some fun stories of her adventures. Ironically she shares a story about Elvis Presley and I just happened to have watched the film ELVIS (Baz Luhrmann)… If you have seen the film and listened to this podcast, please share who you think her mystery driver was. It’s another MiOsc episode on martial arts and fitness progression. The truth of any discipline is that progress is not a straight line. We discuss the importance of understanding your “why”—the core motivation that fuels your training. 429. Coach Dan John on Education Through Experience
I am always grateful to have a conversation with my friend legendary Coach Dan John. Over the years, we’ve been exploring T.H. White’s The Sword in the Stone, using it as a lens to explore education, mentorship, and the way we learn. In this episode, we explore the distinction between knowledge gained through questions and experience versus a quick Google search, youtube, or even reading. You don’t need to have read The Sword in the Stone to enjoy this episode, though I highly recommend it. The themes we explore are universal and I love being on this journey with Dan. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. If you do, please share the episode and take a moment to rate the podcast on your platform of choice. 428. Abigail Hing Wen on AI, Representation, and Imagination
As someone who grew up balancing tradition in a modern world, I’m always drawn to stories that imagine the future through a different lens—especially one that isn’t all doom and dystopia. Especially right now. I had the pleasure of speaking with Abigail Hing Wen—author, filmmaker, and creator of the new book The Vale. It’s a hopeful and imaginative adventure that explores AI, creativity, identity, and moral responsibility. I pick Abigail’s brain about the fear surrounding AI and how she manages to show us its more hopeful, human side. We talk about everything from ethics and empathy to what it means to see girls and women in empowered roles. I loved hearing about her vision for young readers, her personal connection to the story, and how she brought this whole world to life—including an original short film featuring none other than Lea Salonga! This conversation hit on a lot of themes that matter to me—discipline, imagination, storytelling, and representation. 427. RZA on the philosophy of martial arts and hip hop culture
Backstage with RZA where Wah Lum meets the Wu-Tang Clan. What started as a hopeful possibility turned into one of the most unforgettable nights. From personally getting upgraded Wu-Tang Clan concert seats by RZA’s team to unexpectedly interviewing RZA, the night was filled with music, inspiration, and martial arts philosophy. Wu-Tang Clan and Run The Jewels didn’t just deliver an epic concert—they reminded me of the power of shared experience, of energy exchanged through art, and of what it means to be truly intentional in your craft. I sit down with RZA to talk martial arts, hip-hop, creativity, and how we can use our platforms to create real change. This conversation originally aired on Wu Wednesday on SiriusXM’s LL Cool J’s Rock the Bells Radio. If you want the full broadcast version, you’ll need a SiriusXM subscription to tune in. Out of respect for Wu Wednesday, we are not including some of the narrative RZA shared that night. We did our best to keep the flow intact while preserving as much of the vibe as possible, as this episode doubles as a very special one for the podcast. If you are on youtube watching, you might notice I’m bobbing my head the whole time. It’s because through my headset were some smooth Wu-Tang Clan beats playing behind our conversation. I don’t have this in my cut, but you can imagine it. The interview took place on the iconic John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, where RZA has been producing music with kids—because of course… Wu-Tang is for the children. Stay tuned at the end of my interview with RZA for a wrap-up with Oscar and I, as we reflect on the events of the night. I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. 426. Wayne Tsse on Chinese philosophy, culture, and history
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Wayne Tsse in Hong Kong for a special episode of my podcast, where we explored Chinese philosophy and history—but through a deeply personal lens. Wayne is not only a brilliant historian and martial artist, but also the genius behind the Wah Lum couplets on the new banners we used this Chinese New Year. I got to dive into his process for writing them—how each character was chosen with intention with layers of symbolism and how he drew from ancient traditions to create something meaningful for our Wah Lum family. What struck me most was how much thought and heart went into every word. These weren’t just poetic lines—they were a gift. A reflection of our lineage, values, and vision. Understanding the meaning behind his creation made me appreciate the couplets in a whole new way. Please tune in on youtube to see some videos and images of the lovely banners. I highly recommend listening to this episode for a deeper connection to the art, the philosophy, and the legacy they represent. 424. Why I protest
Recently, I’ve lost followers for speaking out—and some asked, “What are you protesting?” This episode is my answer. In this episode, I break down how power is being weaponized—through chaos, corruption, and calculated financial manipulation. Inspired by Scott Galloway’s term “toxic uncertainty,” we look at how market volatility isn’t always random—it’s often engineered to benefit the few at the expense of the many. This isn’t just about economics. It’s about justice, democracy, and why I protest. And staying silent means staying complicit. If you are willing to listen, please tune in for a short 20 minute episode and stay tuned for a brief interview with a couple of inspiring 10 and 9 year olds on why they protest! 423. Bridging Traditional Martial Arts and American Values
At the Wah Lum Temple, Chinese martial arts is not just about fighting—it’s about becoming a better human being. This week on the podcast, Oscar and I dive into the philosophy behind how and why we train. At the heart of our teaching is a belief in respect, humility, kindness, and the pursuit of becoming 1% better every day. As a child of immigrant parents who came to the U.S. seeking the American dream, I reflect on how martial arts can reflect the best of American values: opportunity, discipline, and the responsibility to build a better future for the next generation. We also talk about tradition—why we light incense, why we bow, and how honoring our teachers and elders helps us understand where we come from and where we’re going. As instructors, we strive to pay it forward every day, and our greatest hope is that our students carry these values into their lives and communities. Tune in to this episode as we explore what it means to lead, grow, and give through Chinese martial arts. I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. 419. Jason Chu on the importance of Asian American history
I got the chance to hang with my friend Jason Chu in Los Angeles, and I knew we were in for a conversation that would challenge, inspire, and empower. Jason, a rapper, spoken word artist, historian, and advocate, has been using his platform to highlight the richness of Asian American history while also confronting the challenges our communities continue to face. As we head into AAPI Heritage Month in May, we discuss history—how so much of our story has been erased, overlooked, or distorted. Jason shared how his work is deeply rooted in uncovering and retelling these histories. One of the things I admire most about Jason is his ability to take these lessons and bring them into the digital space, especially on Instagram . In a time when social media can be overwhelming, Jason’s reels offer a powerful counterpoint: they educate, empower, and enrich. He spoke about his process of distilling complex topics into digestible, visually engaging content that resonates with people from all backgrounds. We also touched on the ongoing struggles faced by immigrants today, especially in today’s divisive climate. At the heart of our conversation was a simple but urgent message: we all have a role to play. Whether it’s through art, activism, education, or simply showing up for one another, we have the power to shape the narrative and push for change. It was great to record with Jason in person, as we literally took a seat on the couch—a nod to his viral couch videos. I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. 417. Dr. Mark Cheng on intention, martial arts legacy, and becoming better humans
I loved catching up with my friend Dr. Mark Cheng driving around the streets of LA. Literally. This episode was recorded while driving around the city. Our conversation explored what it means to train with intention, the responsibility of carrying on a martial arts legacy, and the deeper purpose of the arts—not just to refine skill but to cultivate better human beings. 415. Martial Arts Philosophy in Daily Life
In our latest MiOsc podcast episode, we dive deep into martial arts philosophy , exploring the interplay between internal and external elements. Whether in the explosive movements of kung fu or the meditative flow of tai chi, these principles extend far beyond training, influencing our approach to life, work, and personal growth. True mastery in martial arts—and in life—comes from integrating both the internal and external. In our own journeys, finding this balance means knowing when to push forward and when to step back, when to exert effort and when to embrace stillness. Through this episode, we reflect on how martial arts philosophy is not just about self-defense but self-awareness. By embracing both external discipline and internal wisdom, we cultivate not only strong bodies but strong minds and spirits as well. How do you balance the internal and external elements in your own life? Would love to hear your thoughts on this episode! I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. 414. Creativity in Chaos: A Conversation with Langley Kirkwood
In this episode I chat with actor Langley Kirkwood for an insightful conversation about the state of the world, creativity in turbulent times, and life from the vantage point of Cape Town, South Africa. 413. We are Wah Lum family
Kung Fu, Connection, and Community: A Weekend to Remember This past weekend, the Wah Lum family came together in a truly special way to celebrate Sifu Bob Rosen’s 40th anniversary in Boston’s Chinatown. It was more than just a milestone; it was a testament to the strength of our community, the deep roots of our traditions, and the unbreakable bonds we share through our martial arts journey. Schools from Orlando, Knoxville, and Germany had the opportunity to visit all the New England Wah Lum schools, including Boston, Malden, Quincy, Methuen, and Taunton. The hospitality we received was overwhelming, and the spirit of Wah Lum was alive in every interaction, performance, and exchange of knowledge. What makes a gathering like this so unique is its ability to bring together people from all walks of life—different ages, backgrounds, and beliefs—all uniting around something central: Wah Lum system – a unique gift that my father gave to the world. Listen on for a full recap of our weekend and why more than ever, community is essential. I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. 412. Is There a Revolution? How We Fight Back for Societal Change
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about whether we are in the midst of a revolution. We see protests, policy debates, and people speaking out against injustice, but is that enough? Is there real change happening, or are we just moving in circles, reacting to each new crisis as it comes? I often speak with activists, community leaders, and those who have dedicated their lives to fighting for justice. They all echo the same message: Change doesn’t happen by accident. It requires effort, strategy, and most of all—action. So, how do we fight back? How do we push for the societal change we need? 1. Educate Yourself—And Others Knowledge is power. Understanding systemic issues, the history behind them, and the ways they continue to impact marginalized communities is crucial. Read books, listen to podcasts, attend lectures, and most importantly—talk to people. Engage in uncomfortable conversations. Challenge misinformation. The more we know, the harder it is for injustice to hide. 2. Support and Amplify Marginalized Voices Revolutions don’t happen without the people most affected leading the way. Whether it’s racial justice, gender equality, or workers’ rights, those on the frontlines need support. Share their work, donate to their causes, and listen to their voices instead of speaking over them. 3. Use Your Skills for the Cause Not everyone is a protestor, and that’s okay. Change comes from many different forms of activism. If you’re a writer, use your words to educate and inspire. If you’re an artist, create work that sparks dialogue. If you’re an organizer, mobilize communities. The revolution needs all of us. 4. Vote, and Hold Leaders Accountable Yes, voting matters. But voting is not where our responsibility ends. We need to hold politicians accountable beyond election day. That means showing up to town halls, calling representatives, and making it clear that we demand action—not empty promises. 5. Build Community and Collective Power No one wins this fight alone. Find your people—whether it’s through local organizations, online activism, or grassroots movements. When we work together, we become a force that cannot be ignored. Every small action creates a ripple effect. 6. Don’t Get Comfortable Complacency is the enemy of progress. It’s easy to think, “I’ve done my part,” and step back. But the work of social justice is ongoing. Stay engaged. Stay involved. Keep learning, keep pushing, and keep showing up. The Revolution is What We Make It So, is there a revolution? Maybe. Maybe not. We have the power to push for the changes we want to see. The question is: Are we willing to do the work? I’d love to hear your thoughts. What actions do you take to fight for change? Let’s keep this conversation going—because silence is never an option. I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. If you have, please rate my podcast on your platform of choice and share it with others! 411. Best of the Year of the Dragon – A MiOsc Recap
As the Year of the Snake arrives, Oscar and I sat down for another exciting MiOsc episode, looking back at all the things that made the Year of the Dragon unforgettable. From books that impacted us to movies we enjoyed, and most memorable moments—we explored some of our favorites from last year. Our conversation naturally find its way into the realm of travel and food. Last year was full of adventures, and it was no easy task narrowing down the most memorable destinations and events. Perhaps the most enriching part of our recap was revisiting the meaningful conversations we’ve had—both on the podcast and beyond. These moments of connection reminded us why I started the podcast in the first place: to build empathy, understanding, and growth. No “Best of” episode would be complete without some fun surprises. We each brought personal highlights—things that made us smile, whether big or small, significant or silly. The Year of the Dragon has been full of challenges and good times, but I’m grateful to take a moment to reflect and share all the things that made us laugh and cry. In this episode, I sit down with the legendary Coach Dan John, a name synonymous with wisdom in fitness and coaching. We have been doing a deep dive into the exploration of The Sword in the Stone for years. The theme for today centered on integrity. Best of: Suzy Chan on breast cancer, tai chi and music
401. Africa: Unforgettable Safari Encounters, Poaching Realities, and Animal Behavior
In this episode, I break my vacation promise and sit down for a spontaneous chat with our incredible safari field guide at Sabi Sands, South Africa. Geoff Haslam is highly skilled and knowledgeable about all the animals in the reserve. As a qualified Level 2 guide, Geoff has undergone rigorous training and accumulated over 1,200 hours of experience leading trails through the African wilderness. This certification not only reflects his deep understanding of animal behavior, ecology, and safety protocols but also demonstrates his ability to provide guests with an immersive and educational safari experience. We dive into the harsh realities of poaching, explore the fascinating behaviors of the animals we encountered, and reflect on the beauty and intensity of the South African wilderness. From witnessing a pride of lions feasting on a buffalo to seeing a leopard with its impala kill, the experience was both awe-inspiring and humbling. Despite the freezing rain and rough terrain, each game drive brought us closer to nature’s raw, untamed beauty—and I couldn’t resist sharing it with you. Be sure to check out our YouTube channel for exclusive footage of these unforgettable animal encounters! However, trigger warning for those who might get upset by animal kills and feedings. There is some big cat action, so please watch with care. I’m also linking in the blog post ways you can get involved to help protect the animals. There are a couple of gin companies that actively support wildlife conservation efforts, so you can sip and make a difference. I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. 400. MiOsc on Banned Books, the Power of Storytelling, and our African Journey
It’s another MiOsc episode! Oscar and I reflect on our recent trip to Africa. We discuss the vibrant culture, languages, and safaris. This episode was recorded during Banned Books Week, an annual event that highlights the dangers of censorship and the suppression of diverse voices. When books are banned, it’s not just stories that are being suppressed—it’s the opportunity for learning and progress. Reading opens the door to new ideas, diverse cultures, and the possibility of meaningful change, which is why protecting access to education and literature is vital for the future of any society. Oscar and I delve into how storytelling also plays a fundamental role in martial arts, especially in preserving traditions and fostering learning. If we lose our stories, we lose more than just words on a page—we lose the very essence of who we are. Listen to the full episode on our podcast and join the conversation.
