Legislation & the PI Industry: What Investigators Need to Know
Some of the laws shaping how investigators work today were written decades before anyone had a smartphone. And right now, a new round of legislation is moving through state capitals and Congress that could change how PIs track people, pull records, and use the tools they depend on every day.My guest Edward Ajaeb is president of the National Council of Investigation and Security Services (NCISS). He watches for new laws and regulations that are relevant to our profession. And often, he's been in the room when some of it was written, making sure the PI industry has a voice at the table. If you've ever been caught off guard by a law that changed how you could do your job, don't miss this episode. The “American Shrapnel” Podcast: Investigating a Domestic Terrorist
1996. A blast rips through Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. The FBI’s initial suspect — a security guard just doing his job — is cleared. The only evidence pointing to the real bomber is a grainy photo. To the FBI, he’s simply “blob man.” They have no idea who he is or how to find him.You may remember the story of the bomber who blew up the summer Olympics. You might also recall other bombings around the South in the late 1990s. You’ll most likely remember the long manhunt that followed. Our guest is Becca Andrews, the co-producer and co-host of "American Shrapnel," a podcast that digs deep into Eric Rudolph's crimes, his escape and capture, and the extremist communities that indoctrinated and sheltered him. In this episode, Andrews reflects on investigating crimes from decades ago, interviewing traumatized witnesses, and the long shadow of violent extremism. And she shares her determination to tell these kinds of stories in good faith, with respect for the real people who've lived through violence and its aftermath. Origin Stories: The Accidental Investigator
How did a summer job at an amusement park lead to running a private investigations firm? Let’s just say the path was not direct. Molly Donaldson has one of the most interesting and varied PI origin stories around. She’s done a little bit of everything. But her story is not about indecision. It’s about experimentation. Her way of finding a professional sweet spot is to try on lots of career hats. Think of it as an investigation of herself, her talents, and her fascinations. Each job gets her closer to finding out what she does best and enjoys most. In this episode, you'll find out why finding out what you DON'T want to do is half the battle, why "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is the wrong question, and what to ask kids (or yourself) instead.Contact Molly Donaldson at her company site, Waverly Research.FInd her on LinkedIn.Host: Hal Humphreys Guest: Molly DonaldsonMusic provided by Jason White, who composed our theme.Special thanks to Kim Green, who produced this episode.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Pursuit Magazine and PI Education are part of StoryboardEMP, a media and education company in Nashville, TN. GenAI for Private Investigators
Today, we're talking about something that's changing the investigative landscape: Generative AI. It's everywhere, it's powerful, and it's already being used by private investigators — but not always wisely. Threat Intelligence and Investigations
If Jennifer Mackovjak quit working tomorrow, she’d already have a fantastic investigative career under her belt. She worked as a senior detective investigator in the Manhattan DA’s office, before becoming a private investigator. She worked at Kroll, then became a senior VP for investigations at a big risk management firm. And over the years, she’s investigated wrongful convictions for the Innocence Project and Northwestern University’s Center for Wrongful Convictions. In 2020, she co-founded 221B Partners, a private investigations and intelligence firm in Chicago. 221B handles pretty high-level work: litigation consulting, fraud investigations, business and public affairs intel, and threat intelligence. The Beard and the Dome Talk Crime Fiction, Podcasts, TV, and Movies
After a long hiatus, Hal Humphreys ("The Beard") and John Nardizzi ("The Dome") are back to catch up on PI work, wins, and losses, and to share what they love to read, watch, and listen to when they’re not uncovering malfeasance or defending clients. Most of these books, shows, movies, and podcasts are related to crime and investigations. Some only marginally so. Basically, it's stuff they enjoy — as investigators and writers who love a good yarn. We'll publish their full list and some bonus recommendations in Pursuit Magazine next week — keep an eye out for that. Technical Surveillance Countermeasures
Technical Surveillance Countermeasures. TSCM. It's the polished term for bug sweeps. It sounds glamorous, right? But in practice, it's a field littered with hucksters and halfwits wielding gadgets that flash and beep like slot machines. And the folks who hire them are often scared, stressed, and in some cases, mentally ill.Real TSCM professionals don't play with toys or take advantage of vulnerable clients. They have high-tech gear that only works when paired with real training and actual experience. And they to the job with respect, empathy, and professionalism. Our guest, John Frycek, comes recommended as one such skilled and ethical TSCM practitioner. Investigating Family Secrets, with a Mitigation Specialist's Mindset
After her mother died, Johnisha Matthews Levi was sorting through boxes of ordinary family artifacts. While she was in law school, she helped represent death row inmates pursuing appeals and indigent defendants accused of murder. After finding that life-changing document in her mother's things, Levi channeled her defense investigation and mitigation experience as she investigated her own family history. Now she's written a beautiful memoir about that quest to understand her talented and troubled father and the societal forces that forged him. "Every business faces risks. Will we get paid...Do we hire that candidate. Accept their offer. Make a deal. And then there are the risks that are not anticipated. Surveillance: Observe and Document
Surveillance: a French loaner word derived from the verb, "surveiller" — "to oversee/watch."Thanks to a few terrible PI reality shows, most of the world thinks catching cheaters is all P.I.s do. In fact, some investigators do specialize in domestic surveillance. Others, including Hal and John, have taken occasional surveillance assignments over the years, often in cases involving custody disputes or personal injury claims. The surveillance operative's job is to observe and document and, occasionally, testify about what they saw. The job can seem deceptively easy. But doing it well without being "burned" is not as simple as it seems. Listen in as Hal and John share experiences, talk best practices, and laugh about how "unnecessary human drama" is a P.I.'s bread and butter. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel to watch these episodes: /pieducation✅ NEED INVESTIGATOR CE? Mike Spencer's Creative Obsessions
Hal talks with Bay-Area PI Mike Spencer about his podcast, “The Gary Murphy Assassination: A San Francisco Cold Case,” and how obsession fuels his creative work.Mike Spencer is a former crime-beat journalist who rinsed off the ink and turned his skills to private investigation in the 1990s. He’s also a writer, colleague, friend, and longtime contributor to Pursuit. In this episode, we’re asking him about obsession — how it can fuel good work but also erode your sanity. For Spencer, obsession drives his creative endeavors, as a writer and recently, a podcaster: “The Gary Murphy Assassination: A San Francisco Cold Case” is the story of an old case from early in his PI career that burrowed into his brain and would not let go.“I can be a pain in the ass who knows a good story,” Spencer says in episode one of his podcast, as he introduces himself and states his motives and methods. “I am not objective. Family Secrets
This episode explores the things we hide from the people we love most, when the truth is too terrible to bear.Everybody lies. We lie to protect people from painful truths and to preserve the family name. We lie about affairs, flirtations, and addictions. Sometimes, we even lie to ourselves. In this episode, we’ll hear two stories about family secrets—and the blurry line between deception and delusion: An alcoholic conceals his addiction from everyone, including himself. And Ann Walling recalls her old-school Southern family, the rites and hierarchies they observed, and the painful histories they could never bring themselves to face.Host: Hal HumphreysMusic provided by Jason White (who composed our theme), Headmint, Lullatone, and Chris Zabriskie. Special thanks to Jonathan for sharing his story, and to Ann Walling for reading this excerpt from her upcoming book, Sunday Dinner: Coming of Age in the Segregated South. Connections and Distractions
5 Stories about Life and Love, Human Connection and Extracurricular Romance, and One Super-Sad Surveillance JobSometimes connections can feel tenuous. It takes effort to keep the signal strong. The relationship can get lost in the white noise of day-to-day. Distractions sometimes lead to new connections, and connections, even the strongest of family connections, can sometimes lead to distraction. As professional investigators, we deal in connections. But in the realm of human relationships, where real connections are as likely to be perceived as real, connections and distractions unfurl in real time—that is, if you can step back just enough to discern one from the other. In this episode, we’ll hear from radio producer Emily Siner about how distance can test a relationship’s tensile strength. Radio reporter Blake Farmer reflects on how his young son distracts him from his work…or maybe, it’s the other way around. Pursuit editor Kim Green recalls a surveillance gig that turned up a web of distraction and delusion, and writer Abby White gets honest about a ten-year affair that may have been all in her head. We’ll also hear from Neil Caddell about a crazy guy at his kid’s school, and how he used TLOxp to solve the case.Host: Hal HumphreysMusic provided by Jason White (who composed our theme), Headmint, and Lullatone.Special thanks to Emily Siner, Blake Farmer, Kim Green, and Abby White for sharing their stories of connection and distraction. A Matter of Fact
We sent producer Jakob Lewis in search of the facts behind fact-checking. He discovered how high the stakes can be when we confuse fact with faith.Editors and publishing houses, investigators and police detectives—we all get the facts wrong sometimes. Even professionals ignore facts and hold onto tidy lies, for all sorts of reasons: To close a high-pressure case. To make the client happy. Or to make a good story a little bit sexier. In this episode, producer Jakob Lewis explores what it takes to resist those temptations and get the facts straight. Spencer for Hire
As PIs, we all have our greatest hits—tales we tell over and over. Mike Spencer's craziest go-to story has all the elements: Paranoia. Porn. Aliases. Bodily fluids. You get the picture.Pursuit editor Kim Green met Spencer, an ex-journo veteran Bay-Area investigator, in San Francisco’s Mission District in 2014. Cell Phone Pinging and Triangulation
In the summer of 2008, the original editor of Pursuit Magazine posted an article with the following headline: “Locating Mobile Phones Through Pinging and Triangulation.” That is, finding someone you’re looking for by turning that person’s cell phone into a kind of homing device.Over the years, that article set a record for the most hits of any PursuitMag story ever...and it's still getting lots of hits to this day—apparently, because a whole lot of people type "cell phone pinging" into Google search. People really want to know if this is possible, and if so, how to do it.Of course, in technological terms, 2008 is primeval. So when we stumbled across this article again, we got to thinking: What’s possible NOW in terms of pinging a mobile phone? And what’s legal? So we got a hold of an old radio buddy of ours, Sean Cole, and asked him to make some calls.Host: Hal HumphreysMusic provided by Jason White (who composed our theme) and Lullatone.Special thanks to producer Sean Cole (This American Life), and engineer Simon Gugala.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Pursuit Magazine and PI Education are part of StoryboardEMP, a media and education company in Nashville, TN. Right and Wrong
In sxn 1 ep 2, we profile Norma Tillman, a private investigator who specializes in finding people—without resorting to lies or trickery. When Norma Tillman started her career in law enforcement, she had to learn fast how to play up her advantages. At 5’2″, she’d never be as physically strong as most of her male colleagues. But she had mad skills: Diplomacy. Tenacity. Smarts. And a healthy self-esteem that valued team play over competition. In a word, she knew how to make allies.Host: Hal HumphreysMusic provided by Jason White (who composed our theme) and Lullatone.Special thanks to Norma Tillman, radio producer Kim Green, and engineer Simon Gugala.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Pursuit Magazine and PI Education are part of StoryboardEMP, a media and education company in Nashville, TN.
