The Study Boys

Lex Lutheran and FLAME continue The Study podcast with a new venture—The Study Boys.In this second space, the focus is on proclaiming Christ, His gifts, engaging culture, and thoughtfully including the Book of Concord in today’s conversations. This podcast serves as a reaction platform, spotlighting helpful teachings rooted in the Holy Bible and ancient Christian thought while confronting unhealthy ideas that invade the Christian space.

Losing the Gospel in the Pursuit of Experience: When ‘More’ Means Less

In this episode, Lex Lutheran and I wrestle with what happens when our immediate needs and perceived pressures begin to take priority over God’s priorities. When that shift happens, the goalposts move—and what God has actually given to His Church starts to feel secondary, outdated, or even irrelevant. We’re seeing a growing trend where Christians prefer a version of the faith centered on feelings, prophetic words, dreams, and mystical experiences—while struggling to see the ongoing relevance of the Gospel itself: the forgiveness of sins, the finished work of Christ, and His continued presence for us in Word and Sacrament. We react to Dr. Rod Rosenbladt's "The Gospel For Those Broken By The Church." A well-known message to the hurting Christian—those who have been crushed under heavy doses of law preaching and have rarely, if ever, heard the Gospel clearly delivered. His work exposes just how easy it is to lose the main thing, even in churches that claim to preach Christ. Here is the full talk: https://youtu.be/5TJvBxIXLlI?si=DiOJW2-34ZQH3p89 PLEASE Take a listen---to the whole thing!! Thank us later!!We also engage voices—pastors and teachers—who assume that message is old, insufficient, or no longer compelling, and who push for something “more.” But in chasing experience, many have unintentionally displaced the very center: Christ for you. This episode is a call to recover what God has actually promised to do for sinners/saints.

Stop Turning Jesus into a Life Coach: The Problem with Self-Help Christianity (Holy Week)

In this episode of The Study Boys, Lex Lutheran and Flame dive into a growing trend in modern preaching: using Holy Week as a platform for self-help, personal elevation, and motivational messaging. We engage recent examples, including teaching that turns Palm Sunday into a lesson about “humble means” leading to personal destiny, and interpretations of the resurrection that suggest Jesus died so we can avoid physical death—reframing it as mere temporal escape rather than the victory over sin and death. But is that what the Scriptures actually teach? We walk through what Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter are truly about—not our platform, not our elevation, not our temporal success—but the forgiveness of sins, won for us by Christ and delivered through His Word and Sacraments. This episode brings clarity, correction, and comfort, drawing the line between Christ-centered proclamation and man-centered application.Christ for you—not a metaphor for you.

False Expectations from "Level Up" Preaching

In this episode, Lex Lutheran and I respond to recent teaching from Tim Timberlake, who argues that God wants you to dream bigger, want more, and not be comfortable having less than your enemies, and that believers should draw closer to God for new revelations so they can be elevated. He uses the life of Moses to support this idea, and we take time to examine whether the Bible actually teaches this.We talk about how Scripture is often used to promote ambition, elevation, and personal success in ways that the text itself does not support, and why this kind of preaching can become spiritually dangerous. When people are taught to expect things God never promised—promotion, elevation, constant increase—it can lead to disappointment, doubt, and even a crisis of faith when life does not go the way they were told it would. We also briefly discuss the recent controversy involving LaRussell and the phrase “heaven-sent,” and how language like that can be misunderstood if we are not careful with how we speak about God’s work in our lives. This episode is really about learning the difference between what God has actually promised and what American Christianity often says God promised, and why that distinction matters for real faith, real suffering, and real Christian life.

Sunday Morning: Divine Service or Worship Experience?

Not all worship is the same — not because of the instruments, but because of the theology behind it.There is nothing inherently wrong with guitars, and nothing inherently holy about an organ. The real question is this: What is going on theologically in your worship service? Is worship primarily about what we bring to God — our energy, our emotion, our commitment, our performance? Or is it about what God is giving to us — His Word, His forgiveness, His body and blood, His promises? In historic Christian liturgy, the center of worship is not our performance for God, but God’s service to us — through the preached Word, the read Word, the sung Word, and the Sacraments. The Church gathers not to give God something He lacks, but to receive from God what we lack. That changes everything.

  5. 38

Spiritual Elitism: The Dangerous Desire to Be “Anointed,” Apostles, and Prophets

In many corners of modern Christianity, there is a growing trend of believers claiming to be “the remnant,” “the anointed ones,” or uniquely chosen voices with special insight from God. These claims often suggest that certain Christians are closer to God, more spiritually enlightened, or more specially called than others. But is this idea actually biblical? In this episode, we examine how this mindset often confuses Old Testament categories with New Testament realities and can easily turn into a subtle form of spiritual pride. Rather than elevating a spiritual elite, the New Testament teaches that all Christians stand equal in Christ while serving one another through different vocations, gifts, and callings. We discuss:Why the desire to be seen as “anointed,” prophetic, or part of a spiritual remnant is so appealingHow these claims often exalt individuals above the body of ChristThe biblical teaching of vocation and mutual service in the churchWhy the gospel frees us from needing to prove we are more spiritual than othersInstead of chasing spiritual status, the Christian life is about receiving Christ’s gifts and serving our neighbor in humility.

Cutting People Off? Christians, Forgiveness, and the Culture of Canceling Relationships

In this episode, FLAME and Lex Lutheran discuss the growing cultural trend of “cutting people off”—ending relationships permanently over disagreements, offenses, or personal frustrations. Social media often celebrates the idea of removing people from your life at the first sign of conflict, but is this really the Christian way to handle broken relationships? We explore how Scripture calls believers to something deeper than impulsive separation. While there are situations where distance and protection are necessary—especially in dangerous or abusive circumstances—many relationships today are ended prematurely over petty conflicts, misunderstandings, and minor offenses.Christians are called to live in the tension of law and gospel:confronting sin honestly, allowing consequences to unfold when someone refuses to repent, and yet still leaving room for forgiveness, prayer, patience, and reconciliation.Sometimes love means creating space—not to cancel someone—but to let them experience the weight of their decisions while still remaining open to repentance and restoration. In a culture quick to cancel relationships, we ask:What does the fruit of the Spirit look like in conflict? How should Christians practice long-suffering and forgiveness? When are boundaries appropriate, and when are they just bitterness? How do we hold people accountable without abandoning them?Join us as we think through how Christians can navigate broken relationships in a way that reflects Christ’s mercy, truth, and wisdom.

Faith in Faith? Christine Caine Corrupts Biblical Faith

In this episode, Lex Lutheran and Flame respond to Christine Caine’s teaching that the quality of your faith can move God’s hand and unlock miracles. But is faith meant to impress God?From a biblical perspective, we argue that when faith turns inward—measuring its strength, intensity, or effectiveness—it stops resting in Christ and begins trusting itself. That subtle shift corrupts biblical faith.Scripture teaches that faith does not move God. Faith receives what God freely gives in Christ. The power is not in the quality of faith, but in the object of faith: Jesus. When Christians are told that miracles hinge on how impressive their faith is, the result is not freedom—but pressure, anxiety, and often spiritual disillusionment. If you’ve ever wondered whether your faith just “wasn’t strong enough,” this conversation is for you.

Jackie & Preston Are Right But 1 Thing Is Missing, The Eucharist

Jackie Hill Perry and Preston Perry are absolutely right to call believers into deeper intimacy with the Lord. We need prayer and fasting. We need communion with God. We need hearts awakened to Christ. But there is one thing missing. When they speak about intimacy, you can hear healthy reflexes toward something objective something real something happening outside of us. Yet they stop short of the place where Christ has promised to meet us bodily and concretely. The Lord’s Supper. In this episode of The Study Boys, Lex Lutheran and I pick up where they leave off. We move from the language of intimacy to the language of gift. From spiritual closeness to Christ actually giving Himself to us. From internal experience to external promise. Not just emotion. Not just devotion. But forgiveness of sins.Renewing strength.Christ for you.Extra nos.Outside of us.Given.Let’s go deeper.

False Prophets Are the Real Threat in Spiritual Warfare

In this episode, The Study Boys unpack true biblical spiritual warfare and contrast it with the superstitious, pop-Christian versions often passed around today. We identify the real threat to the Church—the false prophet, a tool Satan uses to deceive Christians—and explain why sound doctrine is essential in recognizing that danger. We confront these things by reacting to an episode from Chris Rosebrough on spiritual warfare.Watch the full episode here:https://www.youtube.com/live/BfXRqgWlB8U?si=L9pVaPSHyiW8Pxrv

Has Intense Worship Replaced the Sacraments as God’s Presence?

Has music—and intense worship experiences—quietly taken the place of the Sacraments? In this episode, Lex Lutheran and I talk honestly about how powerful music and emotional worship environments can compete with and even distort where Christians are taught to look for God’s presence.God has not left us guessing. He has promised where He will be for us—delivering the forgiveness of sins through His Word and Sacraments. When experience begins to replace promise, assurance shifts from Christ’s work to our feelings. This conversation isn’t anti-music.It’s pro-promise.Watch or listen to the full episode of The Study Boys and let’s talk about where faith is meant to rest.We react to another Dr. Eric Phillips video. How to Keep the Law: The Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel

What does it actually mean to “keep the law”?In this episode, Lex Lutheran and I react to popular Christian takes that blur law and gospel—turning commands into promises and promises into pressure. We walk through why the law must remain law, why the gospel must remain gospel, and how confusing the two burdens consciences rather than freeing them. This distinction isn’t academic—it’s pastoral, biblical, and necessary for faith. Here is the video by Dr. Eric Phillips that we react to at the end of the episode: https://youtu.be/mul1J9EcBh8#LawAndGospel #LutheranTheology #ConfessionalLutheran #ChristianDoctrine #JustificationByFaith #TheologyPodcast #Preaching #TheStudyBoys #LexLutheran #Flame #BiblicalTheology

Druski Hilariously Challenges Christians: Stop Tolerating False Prophets

In this episode of The Study Boys, Lex Lutheran and I dive into Druski's latest satirical take on megachurch culture and prosperity gospel trends. We're not here to defend bad theology—quite the opposite. We believe that humor can be a wake-up call. It's a healthy challenge for the Church to discern, to mark and avoid what's harmful, and to guide people toward healthier, Christ-centered communities. Did Christian Rap (CHH) Fail the Church---the Black Church and Community?

In this episode of The Study Boys, Lex Lutheran and FLAME respectfully disagree with Dr. Anthony Bradley’s claim that Reformed Christian Hip Hop “failed” in Black communities due to a supposed mismatch in atonement emphasis.Bradley argues that the traditional Black church has always centered Christus Victor and the Resurrection, while Reformed movements brought doctrine-driven shame instead of victory.Lex and FLAME contend the opposite: Christian Hip Hop overwhelmingly reached—and continues to reach—the Black church and the broader Black community. The movement was not a failure, but a meaningful point of contact where gospel proclamation, cultural engagement, and theological formation converged.🎙️ New episode of The Study Boys available now.

    Why Go to Church?

Why do Christians go to church? Is it for community? Routine? Tradition? A good message? Or something else?In this episode of The Study Boys, Lex Lutheran and FLAME walk through the most common reasons people give for going to church—and then contrast them with the biblical reasons Scripture actually gives. From consumer-driven answers to Christ-centered truth, we make the case that church is not about what we bring, but about what God gives: His Word and Sacraments, His forgiveness, His gifts for sinner/saints.If you’ve ever asked “Do I really need to go to church?”—this one’s for you.#TheStudyBoys #WhyGoToChurch #ChurchMatters #BiblicalChristianity #ConfessionalChristianity #WordAndSacrament #LawAndGospel #ChristianPodcast #TheologyMatters #ChristForYou

Christmas is NOT Pagan (Merry Christmas!)

Is Christmas pagan? Is it man-made?Or is it something far better? On this installment of The Study Boys, Lex Lutheran and I engage the claims often made about Christmas—especially the accusation that it’s pagan or merely a human tradition. We respond negatively by showing what Christmas is not, and positively by confessing what Christmas is.We interact with a video by R. L. Solberg, author, theologian, and professor based in Nashville, who addresses and debunks common myths surrounding Christmas. We also engage a clip from Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, President of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, on the true meaning of Christmas.Christmas is not about syncretism, cultural compromise, or vague spirituality.Christmas is about God in the flesh—Jesus Christ—coming to forgive sins, rescue sinners, and dwell with His people (Matt. 1:21; John 1:14; Gal. 4:4–5).This is not sentimentality. This is confession.🎄 Christ for you. Here are the two videos we reacted to in full:R. Generational Curses: Did Jesus Break All Curses? w/ Bryan Wolfmueller (REACTION to Abednego Lufile and Kevin L.A. Ewing))

In this episode of our podcast, Lex Lutheran and I (FLAME) are joined by Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller to dive into the controversial topic of generational curses. We tackle the question: has Jesus truly broken every curse, or do some still linger? We're reacting to a video by Abednego Lufile and Kevin L.A. Ewing, who argue that while Jesus has indeed granted us forgiveness of sins, certain temporal curses—like sickness or generational struggles—remain because of "open spiritual doors" from ancestral sins. We confront this claim from a Confessional Lutheran perspective, clarifying the difference between law and gospel and reaffirming the historic Christian teaching on sanctification. Kirk Cameron, why? Defending the Faith: Necessary, Not Nasty (Venting Session)

In this episode, FLAME and Lex Lutheran explore why defending the Christian faith is not about being divisive or mean-spirited, but is a necessary part of staying true to biblical teaching. They react to a video by Christa Petzold (author of Journey Through Church History, Gathered by Christ, and the New Augsburg Trilogy) and also discuss Kirk Cameron’s view on annihilationism and Jesse Duplantis’ false notion that God the Son took on human flesh because of some supposed perfect quality in humanity. Ultimately, they emphasize that unity can’t be built around these distorted ideas, and that defending the faith is a biblical call to uphold the truth.#DefendTheFaith #ChristianApologetics #UnityInTruth #ChristaPetzold #ChurchHistory #LCMS #Lutheran

We break down Mike Todd’s recent explanation, showing how he uses the right word—Trinity—but fills it with the wrong meaning, essentially promoting a form of modalism. The Bible Is Not Enough Says T.D. Jakes and Priscilla Shirer

🎙️ Episode 10 — The Bible Is Not Enough Says T.D. Jakes and Priscilla ShirerIn this episode of The Study Boys, we unpack a growing problem in modern Christianity—trusting “another word” outside of God’s Word. From popular conference teachings to viral sermon clips, we’re seeing a trend where human impressions, personal revelations, and “fresh words” are treated as equal—or even superior—to Holy Scripture. We explore why that’s dangerous, how it undermines the sufficiency of God’s Word, and what it reveals about our view of the Bible’s authority. The conversation gets real, biblical, and unapologetically confessional. We also react to Pastor Chris Rosborough from  @Fighting4theFaith 's reaction video to Priscilla Shirer. They highlight a crucial lesson: the need for Christian influencers and artists to be firmly rooted in historical theology and ready to answer questions about the faith. It’s about turning missed opportunities into moments of genuine guidance rather than simply telling someone to “read the Bible again.” This episode offers a broad discussion on the Trinity, salvation, and the true nature of Christ Jesus our Lord—a call to bring back solid theological mentoring.

Religion vs. Relationship?A False Choice (S1E5)Lex Lutheran and FLAME react to Pastor Jonathan Fisk and dig into the popular slogan, “Christianity is a relationship, not a religion.” We show why that either/or frame is unhealthy and unbiblical—and how the Gospel gives us a better both/and: a living relationship with Christ within the religion He actually gives His Church (Word and Sacrament, confession and creed, prayer and community). Instead of pitting doctrine against devotion, or church practices against personal faith, we trace how Scripture and the historic Church hold these together for our comfort and growth.
