The Syllabus Didn't Cover This: Modern Dating in College
by Kaley Kavanaugh
“Why won't they just define what we are? Why did they disappear without a word? Why are you expected to want nothing and be okay with everything?”If you've had some version of this conversation with your friends lately, you already know modern dating is confusing, and nobody's really talking about it honestly.Being in college today, and really just being in your early 20s, comes with a dating landscape that's more complicated than any generation before, and somehow, there's still no roadmap.“The Syllabus Didn't Cover This” is the podcast filling that gap. Each episode examines one specific dynamic shaping modern relationships: why we avoid labels even when we're emotionally all in, how digital platforms restructured intimacy, why social pressure rewards detachment over honesty, and how power and gender quietly dictate who takes the risks and who takes the blame. This isn't advice. So…What Are We?: Situationships In College
“So…What Are We?: Situationships In College” tackles the topic nobody warns you about before starting college, situationships. In this debut episode, Kaley sat down with her two roommates and the Senior Education Program Manager at the McCluskey Center for Violence Prevention to get honest about one of the most confusing experiences of college life. We break down what actually defines a situationship, why they're so common in college, and the power dynamics that make them way more complicated than they seem on the surface. We also get into the real harm that individuals can both cause and experience, and share our own real, unfiltered stories from the trenches. Whether you're currently in one, just got out of one, or have no idea what you're even doing, this episode is for you because one thing is for sure, the syllabus definitely didn't cover this.Learn more about the University of Utah's McCluskey Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education here. The Syllabus Didn’t Cover This is hosted by Kaley, a student staff member at the McCluskey Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education.
