St. Patrick Retold: The Man Behind the Myth
Was St. Patrick really an enslaved teenager kidnapped by Irish raiders—or could the story be more complicated? In this episode, I’m joined by historian Dr. Roy Flechner, author of St Patrick Retold, to take a fresh look at one of the most famous origin stories in Irish history.Together we unpack the sources behind Patrick’s own writings, the political and social world of late Roman Britain, and the long-standing tradition that Patrick was captured and enslaved in Ireland as a young man. But what if there’s another possibility? Could Patrick instead have come from a wealthy Roman family—perhaps even the son of a decurion—who left Britain under very different circumstances, possibly tied to the pressures of taxation and civic obligations in the late Roman Empire?Dr. Flechner explains how historians evaluate early texts like Patrick’s Confessio, what we can and can’t know about his life, and why Patrick’s story has been retold so many times across the centuries. Along the way we explore myth-making, historical evidence, and how Ireland’s most famous saint became a global figure. If you’ve ever wondered how much of the St. Patrick story is history—and how much might be legend—this conversation will change the way you think about Ireland’s patron saint.
