4 stages of hair growth and 4 ways to maintain hair health

On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss the 4 stages of hair growth and 4 ways to maintain hair health: Anagen Phase (Growing Phase) Also known as the ‘Growth Phase’ or ‘Active Phase’, the Anagen Phase is when the cells in the root of your hair are most rapidly dividing so more new hair is formed. Time span for the anagen phase is 3 to 5 years. During the anagen phase, your hair follicles are pushing out hairs that will continue to grow until they’re cut or until they reach the end of their lifespan and fall out. At any time, about 90 percent of the hairs on your head are in the anagen phase. Catagen (Transition Phase) The catagen phase starts when the anagen phase ends, and tends to last about 10 days or so. During this chapter, hair follicles shrink and hair growth slows. The hair also separates from the bottom of the hair follicle, yet remains in place during its final days of growing. Only about 5 percent of the hairs on your head are in the catagen phase at any given time. Telogen (Resting Phase) The telogen phase typically lasts around 3 months. An estimated 10 to 15 percent of your scalp hairs are in this phase. Hairs don’t grow during the telogen phase, but they don’t usually fall out either. The telogen phase is also when new hairs start to form in follicles that have just released hairs during the catagen phase. Exogen (Shedding Phase) The exogen phase is essentially an extension or a part of the telogen stage of hair growth. During the exogen phase, hair is shed from the scalp, often helped along by washing and brushing. Losing 50 to 100 hairs per day during the exogen phase is normal. During the exogen phase, which can last about 2 to 5 months, new hairs are growing in the follicles as old hairs fall away. Healthy hair, fuller hair depends on genetics and hormones. 4 ways to Maintain hair health : Proper diet Take your vitamins: Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, Iron, Reduce stress Proper hair care routine About the Host My name is Terrinique Pennerman and I am the host of the Terrinique Show. The #1 Hairstyle to AVOID during the Summer if you have natural hair

On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss the #1 Hairstyle to avoid during the Summer if you have natural hair: There is a time and a season under the sun for everything. This is not the time or the season for a silk press. A silk press normally lasts for two weeks. It can sometimes last much longer as long as the hair hasn't been wet down. If your hair comes into any contact with moisture from water, humidity or sweat, it will begin to convert back to its natural curl. 6 things you should never use on your hair

On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss 6 things your should never use on your hair: 1. Glue—This should be a no brainer but its not. 2. Mineral oil or petroleum- Causes buildup on the hair and scalp which is hard to wash away with even a good shampoo. 3. Hydrogen peroxide—at home rememdy for lighting the hair. Hydrogen perioxide penetrats the strands which then breaks the melanin and strips away color. It basically corrodes the strands which leads to split ends and frizz. 4. Lemon Juice—used as a highlighting agent when exposed to sun. But it can cause your strands to become brittle and dry when exposed to sun. 5. Essential oils—Need to be diluted before putting them on the hair or scalp because they are so concentrated and can cause itching and irritation. 6. Baking soda—baking soda only works for people with super oily hair. This can dry out your hair and scalp, leaving it irritated. 5 Summer Hair Care Tips

On this episode of the Terrinique, we discuss 5 Summer Hair Care Tips: 1. Get a trim before protective styling: Start summer with a trim. Hair really does grow faster in the summer. That's because there are more hairs in the anagen, or growing, stage during late spring and summer than in the dead of winter. 2. Shield your strands from the sun: Use products like oils, creams and gels. If you’re spending lots of time in the sun, wear a hat to protect your hair and face. 3. Saturate strands before taking a dip: Wet and saturate your hair with leave-in conditioner before swimming. After the swim, rinse your hair with water, this will eliminate your hair absorbing salt water and chemicals from the pool. 4. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner combo: Moisture is key to the Summer, so make sure your hair is hydrated. 5. Give heat tools a rest: Skip the heat altogether and opt for protective styles or low maintenance styles. About the Host My name is Terrinique Pennerman and I am the host of the Terrinique Show. 4 ways to shiny hair

On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss 4 ways to shiny hair: What is a healthy cuticle? The cuticle are overlapping tiles that protect the inner moist part of the hair shaft called the cortex. When the cuticle tiles lay flat, they reflect light and your hair shines. When they are ruffled, they repel light and the hair appears dry and frizzy. 1. Cool water—rinsing with cold water rather than hot water helps the hair retain moisture and seals the cuticle. 2. Shampooing the hair — wash the hair with shampoos that restore moisture and body. Use an ACV rinse once a month to remove buildup. 3. Downward application of product- Manipulating the hair in a downward motion when applying product will flatten the cuticle because they are naturally positioned to lay down. 4. Regular deep treatment- Weekly deep treatments are a great way to maintain hair health. Using oils and butters daily to seal in moisture is also helpful. They may resemble the end of an unraveled rope. Exposure to extreme weather conditions, and hair care techniques such as blow drying, straightening, and curling may cause split ends. They're also caused by chemical hair products. 8 causes of split ends: 1. Not protecting your hair at night 2. Not oiling the hair at night 3. Never wearing protective styles 4. 6 ways to prevent single strand knots

On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss 6 ways to prevent single strand knots. 1. Get regular trims The ends of our hair is the driest, this is true for all hair textures. Dry hair and split ends are prone to knotting, so to be on the safe side trim regularly. 2. Oil the ends of your hair Oiling your ends regularly, will ward off dryness and make your ends slippery preventing single strands knots. This is the best protection when it comes to length retention and stopping tangles. 3. Detangle your hair properly For those of us with thick, curly hair, detangling can be a real chore. Although you may get tired, do not rush through the detangling process. Apply a slippery conditioner to your ends, our Thirsty Kurls Leave-in Conditioner is the best, then work the product up your strands. Detangle by using a detangling brush, preferably our Kurlee Belle Flexible Detangling Brush, saturate the hair in conditioner, moving from the ends upward. Detangling this way is a game changer, thank us later. 4. Protect your hair at night Reduce friction on your hair and knotting by using a satin bonnet or a satin pillowcase at night. Instead of allowing your hair to run wild at bedtime, a bonnet or pillowcase will help keep your hair intact, reducing the chances of knots and dryness. Our Kurlee Belle Satin Bonnet and Kurlee Luxury Satin Pillowcase are great options for overnight hair protection. 5. Deep Condition every time you shampoo Deep conditioning should be a normal part of your hair care routine, every time you shampoo. Yes, every single time. Regular deep treatments strengthen, moisturize and protect the hair. Our Banana Nut & Avocado Deep Treatment is a great thick but slippery treatment for nourishing, moisturizing and softening the strands to get rid of knots. 6. Keep your hair hydrated Dryness isn’t anyone’s friend, especially a curly girl. Keep your hair moisturized to reduce friction and healthy, shiny locs. Depending on your hair’s needs, use a water based leave-conditioner every day or every other day. We love our lightweight water based Thirsty Kurls Leave-in Conditioner for hydration. Ingredient Deep Dive: Are silicones bad for the hair with Nirmal Shah

On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we take a deep dive into silicones in hair care with Formulation Chemist Nirmal Shah. What are Silicones. Are they really made out of Sand? Yes, Silicones are derived from naturally available Silica stone (Sand), Water and gas Methanol---however created synthetically via series of Chemical reactions in the lab! They are typically used in Hair care for their Great Conditioning effect, for improviving Texture, glide and shine to the hair. They even have great Heat Protection capabilities for Various Hair treatments. Are Silicones bad for Hair? This is a very good question, however its very Broad and Debatable. Its just like asking if if Cofee good for you? Silicones too-depends on the usage level, primary purpose in formulations, final Application. In fact, variable like differnt Hair types and daily Regimen using Silicones can also determine if its good or bad. Are there any Silicones better than the other? There are many types of Silicones with different applications. Let me classify into 4 Broadly used types: 1) Cyclopentasiloxanes (typically known as D4 and D5), very light weighted and low flast points, typically seen in Hair Sprays and Mists or Alcohol free formulas. 2) Dimethoicones or Cyclomethicones (These come in differnt viscosities measured by units cst from 5 sct to 1000s cst). These are moslty for their texture, ease of application, making the products less soapy. 3) Dimethicones crosspolymers (crosslinked with PEGs or different chain of silicones to increase the visocosity or to make it more Water soluble) 4) Phenyl Trimethicones- Heavy silicones that add Glide to lustre to the hairs, great conditioning and Heat protection capabilities Are there any Negative effects of Silicones? Silicones are known for causing build up on Hair especially on Curly Hair.It can also dry out and cuases flakes. However, to be very honest with you, I think its very much dependent on how well the formulation is created. you see, Silicones are not Water soluble at all. So, from the formulation perspective, their usage level and how well are they are kept emulsified in the formula is very very imp. For eg. 0.5-2% is good enough to reduce soapiness, provide the glide and texture to hair. Is a Silicone free hair routine better than a Silicone hair routine? For Better or verse, Necessity is the Mother of Invention. Due to a lot of fear mongering posts on social media, scientists and raw mateiral manufacturers have come up with innovative ingredients for brands to be able to make Silicone free claims. Several coconut based alkanes are used as sources instead of Silica, unique blends of esters to provide silicone like feel and even Natural oil blends which are rich is Omega Acids and Vitamins can be used as Silicones alternatives, based on the Application. Hope this helps. About the Host My name is Terrinique Pennerman and I am the host of the Terrinique Show. If you don’t know me, I am the Founder & CEO of Kurlee Belle. The Dandruff Dilemma: How to rid your scalp of dandruff

On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss how to rid your scalp of dandruff. The best way to deal with dandruff is to think about the scalp as the skin. At Kurlee Belle, we like to think that scalp care is skin care. Dandruff is a common scalp condition characterized by the shedding of dead skin cells. It's often accompanied by itching and the appearance of white flakes on the scalp and hair. The exact cause of dandruff is not fully understood, but it's believed to be influenced by various factors such as an: - overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia - sensitivity to certain hair products, - an imbalance of the scalp's natural oils. Maintain a consistent wash day routine: 1. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo: Look for shampoos containing active ingredients like zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, or selenium sulfide. These ingredients help control the fungus on the scalp and reduce flaking. 2. Wash your hair regularly: Frequent shampooing can help remove excess oil and dead skin cells from the scalp. Aim for at least three times a week, but don't overdo it, as excessive washing can strip away the scalp's natural oils. 3. Be gentle when washing: Massage the shampoo into your scalp using your fingertips, not your nails. Rinse thoroughly to remove any residue. 4. Avoid harsh hair products: Some hair products, like styling gels and sprays, can exacerbate dandruff. Opt for gentle, non-irritating hair care products and avoid excessive use of styling products. 5. Manage stress: Stress can contribute to dandruff, so try incorporating stress-reducing activities into your daily routine, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies you enjoy. 6. Maintain a healthy diet: A well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, especially zinc, can promote a healthy scalp. Include foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. 7. Consider natural remedies: Tea tree oil, known for its antifungal properties, can be beneficial for reducing dandruff. Dilute a few drops in a carrier oil and gently massage it into your scalp. How to tell if your hair is heat damaged

On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss how to tell if your hair is heat damaged. Heat damaged hair loses elasticity because applying heat on a regular basis affects the hair's ability to retain moisture and changes its structure. When hair becomes dehydrated, it becomes stiffer and more difficult to work with, often resulting in split ends and breakage. Damaged hair looks rough, dry, dull, and frizzy. It loses its natural shine because the cuticles, which give hair its sheen, have been damaged. Heat damaged curly hair may appear limp, and the curls may not hold their shape, and straight hair may not appear as sleek. Your hair is heat damaged if: 1. Your curls don’t bounce and are limp 2. Your hair feels funny or rough in texture 3. Your hair looks dull and feels dry 4. Your hair is shedding more than normal 5. 5 keys to preventing hair loss

On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss 5 keys to preventing hair loss: 1. Maintain high moisture levels When it comes to hair health, moisture is king. Keep your insides hydrated and your hair hydrated. Use products that list water as the first ingredient. Water is the best moisturizer and products that are water based are more moisturizing. 2. Avoid tension hairstyles Take a break from tension hairstyles that pull and tug at the hair. Wear protective styles that don’t stress the hair line. FUN FACT: If you’ve noticed that your hair doesn’t grow when you wear box braids, it is because most stylist don’t condition the hair before braiding. Condition and seal your hair with an oil blend before getting it braided to retain length. For best results, braid your own hair in a protective style instead of using braid hair. 3. Take your vitamins Eat foods that are high in protein and nutrients like: eggs, salmon, spinach.. and of course take your vitamins. 4. Drink lots of water It sounds simple but water intake does affect hair growth. The scalp produces natural sebum to keep our follicles healthy. A major component of sebum is water and if you're dehydrated, your hair will be too. 5. Use the right products Use products that are water based and include natural ingredients. Stay away from chemicals that change the natural structure of the hair and damaging hair tools like glue, flat irons. The good and bad of Coconut Oil for hair

#coconutoil #haircare #naturalhair #curlyhair On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss the good and bad of coconut in hair. Coconut oil is unique in that it's able to penetrate the shaft of the hair. Coconut oil is predominantly made up of a medium-chain fatty acid called lauric acid. This gives coconut oil a long, straight structure, which is more easily absorbed deep into the hair shaft. There was a study done in 2003 to compare which oil was best at protecting the hair. Researchers compared coconut oil, mineral oil and sunflower oil before and after washing the hair. What they discovered that the hair where coconut oil was applied had far less protein loss that that of mineral oil and sunflower oil. Benefits of coconut oil: - It works by helping prevent protein loss in your hair. - natural remedy for dry, brittle, damaged hair. - Strengthen hairs, prevent hair loss, and reduce split ends. - hair that appears thicker and more voluminous. - it can help with severe dryness, eczema, psoriasis - It is beneficial to apply it to hair both before and after washing it. - Moisturizing your hair and reducing breakage - Protecting your hair from environmental damage like wind, sun, and smoke Don’t use too much coconut oil: -- Coconut oil is 90% saturated fat so using too much can cause: - Buildup of oil on your hair and scalp. - This could make your hair greasy and dull, especially if you have very fine hair. avoid putting coconut oil on their scalp altogether. - Potential allergic reactions. While coconut oil is safe for hair and skin, there’s always the possibility of an allergic reaction. If you apply coconut oil to your scalp or hair and notice signs of an allergic reaction, stop using it and call your doctor immediately. - If you use too much it can clog the pores because it is 90% saturated fat. 5 tips for caring for gray hair!

On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss 5 tips for caring for gray hair. Why does hair turn gray? The pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die as we get older. Fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, means that there is fewer melanin in that strand, so the hair turns gray, white or silver. 1. Stay away from products that have dyes which can turn your grays yellow. Use a purple tinted shampoo and conditioner to counteract the effects of yellow. 2. Don’t over shampoo. 3. Seal in moisture daily with a good leave-in conditioner, hair oil or moisture serum. This will calm unruly hair and soften your strands. 4. Keep your curls nourished. Take a multivitamin or hair, skin and nails vitamins to keep your curls nourished. 5. Don’t pluck your strands. How to properly moisturize your hair by porosity

On today's episode of the Terrinique Show, we are discussing How to properly moisturize your hair by porosity. First understand the porosity of your hair: Low porosity- Low porosity hair doesn’t easily absorb water. It takes a long time to wet and dry. Hair care products tend to stay on the surface of the hair rather than being absorbed. Medium porosity- Medium porosity strands have looser cuticles, leaving spaces where moisture can enter. But, the cuticles aren't too loose, so the hydration and other nutrients will stay inside the hair longer. Medium porosity is often referred to as a perfect balance. High porosity- High porosity means the cuticle layer of the hair are open. It absorbs water quickly and releases it quickly. This type of hair is prone to frizz and feels very dry. Wash day regimen by porosity: Low porosity—keep your hair clean. Wash once a week. (Clarifying shampoo on week one and Moisturizing shampoo for the other 3 weeks.) Deep condition once a week. Then apply leave-in. Daily spray with water and apply a leave-in. Use cream and oil to seal in moisture. Medium porosity—keep your hair clean. Wash once a week. Deep condition once a week. Then apply leave-in. Daily spray with water and apply a leave-in. Use cream and oil to seal in moisture. High porosity—Pre poo first then, wash the hair. Wash once a week. Conditioner use it. (Use a protein deep treatment once a month, followed by a moisturizing deep treatment for the other 3 weeks.) Deep condition once a week. Then apply leave-in. Daily spray with water and apply a leave-in. Use heavy cream with Shea butter, Coconut Oil- recommended Kurlee Belle Kurl Defining Crème. The truth behind alcohol in hair products

On today's episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss the truth behind alcohol in hair products. Short chain = Bad alcohols Long chain = Moisturizing alcohols Short-chain alcohols have 3-5 carbons in the longest chain while long-chain alcohols have 13-22 carbons in the longest chain. The different lengths change how the body or hair absorbs and uses the nutrient. Short chain are good at soaking up excess grease or sweat, but they can cause excessively dry the scalp and hair, leaving the hair cuticle rough and brittle. Long-chain fatty alcohols are excellent moisturizers and emollients for hair. Examples of Short chain alcohols (to be avoided for hair care): Isopropyl alcohol
 Ethanol
 Ethyl alcohol
 Propanol
Propyl alcohol Examples of Long chain alcohols (to be used for hair care): Behenyl alcohol

5 signs your hair needs protein

On this episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss 5 tell tale signs your hair needs protein: 1. Hair that is super porous Hair that absorbs and releases moisture quicker than normal. Highly porous strands have tears and gaps in the hair, exposing the cortex to stressors. This causes the hair to absorb and release moisture faster than normal, leading to frizzy, tangled hair. 2. Hair that has low elasticity or doesn’t bounce back but breaks If the hair stretches and bounces back to its normal length without breaking, it means the hair is healthy. If it stretches and doesn’t return or breaks, then your hair needs protein. 3. Excessive shedding and breakage Normally you should lose up to 100 strands a day. But if you’re losing more hair due to breakage then your hair needs protein. 4. Hair feels gummy Does the hair feel mushy, sticky or like bubblegum? This means that your hair's support system is weak and has been over-moisturized, causing the texture to change and feel funny. 5. Chemical processed hair or color treated hair Chemicals elevate the pH of the hair, causing the cuticles to rise. The longer the cuticles are raised up, the longer the cortex of the hair is exposed the more susceptible to protein loss and breakage. Hair color, bleaching, and treatments contain chemicals that alter the protein bonds of the hair, leading to damage. The right way to deep condition your hair.

On today's episode of the Terrinique Show, we discuss the right way to deep condition the hair. What’s the right way to deep condition the hair. Why shampoo your hair before deep conditioning: Removes the barriers of buildup, sebum and debris and help the hair shaft absorb the ingredients from the conditioner. Deep conditioners have more emollient and humectant ingredients than regular conditioners. When choosing a deep conditioner you want to look for ingredients like Shea Butter, Avocado, banana and honey. Heat or no heat: There is no need to use heat when deep conditioning. Using heat just helps the conditioner penetrate deeper into the strands but there is no need to use here. How long to leave it on: from 20 mins to an hour. 5 reasons why your hair is causing acne break outs

On today's episode we will be discussing, 5 reasons why your hair is causing acne break outs. 1 Pillowcase and sheets While you sleep, hair products, sweat and dirt can accumulate on your pillowcase. This dirt travels to your face causing acne. Use our KB Luxury pillowcase that protects skin and hair while you sleep and wash your pillowcase regularly. 2️ Product that contain oil If you find yourself with whiteheads or acne, it could be due to your hair care. Products that contain oils, can sometimes find their way to your face, clog your pores and a zit appears. 3️ Wearing your hair in the face You’re always wearing your hair in your face. Constantly wearing bangs or hanging styles can be the cause of your acne. Switch it up and opt for styles that are away from your face. Especially in warmer months when we sweat more. 4️ Not shampooing hair enough You’re not washing your hair frequently. If your scalp starts to itch and flake, it’s time to shampoo. Dirty hair is one of the biggest culprits of acne. Keep it clean and shampoo at least once a week. 5 Wearing caps, hats, visors and headbands that haven’t been properly washed that touch the face. Does Yeast Infection cream really cause hair growth?

How does anti-fungal cream work: Anti-fungal cream targets the fungal cell membrane and the fungal cell wall (both structures surround and protect the fungal cells). When either of these structures is compromised, the fungal cell can bursts open causing the contents to leak out and eventually die. Active ingredient in Monistat: Miconazole (mi-con-a-zole) nitrate, an anti-fungal ingredient. The Main Benefits: It addressees fungal infections on the scalp, including seborrheic dermatitis. Who should use it: Monistat is not an advisable hair loss treatment. That being said, it would be most beneficial for those dealing with fungal infections on the scalp. What’s is Seborrheic dermatitis? This condition is likely caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia (Mal·as·se·zia) yeast (a substance normally found in the skin) that triggers inflammation, causing changes in the skin. In infants it is called cradle cap. Seborrheic (seb·or·rhe·ic) dermatitis is a common skin disease that causes an itchy rash with flaky scales. It also causes redness, light patches, dandruff, cradle cap, seborrhea, seborrheic eczema, and seborrheic psoriasis. What’s causes fungus on the scalp? Stress Your genes A yeast that usually lives on your skin without causing problems Certain medical conditions and medicines Cold, dry weather An immune system response Should you use Monistat on your hair? I am not advocating the use of monistat on hair but to incorporate a healthy hair care regimen like regularly shampooing your hair, not applying grease or any product to the scalp for a prolonged period of time to keep the scalp clean and healthy. Hair: Do braids really grow hair? (Protective Styles)

Do braids really grow hair? Why is it that you’ve been wearing braids for 2 months, you see lots of new growth but when you take your braids out, your hair doesn’t seem to have retained length? The reason. Think about the process when you’re getting braids such as box braids. 1. Is your hair freshly washed? 2. Did you do a deep conditioning treatment? 3. Did you moisturize and detangle your hair with a leave in conditioner. 4. Did you seal that leave-in conditioner with a light oil? One of the main reasons why you’re not retaining length after taking out your box braids is because your hair was not moisturized. Each day, your hair gets drier and more brittle. Causing split ends and the hair to break. The best protective styles are those where your ends are secured and can be moisturized frequently. Great options for protective styles: 1. Natural braids with your own hair. 2. Top knot that doesn’t stress your edges. 3. Updos where your ends are secured. Hair Love: Embracing your natural texture

We encourage self love and apart of self love is self acceptance. Accepting yourself, flaws and all. The Bible says, that you were fearfully and wonderfully made. In fact, you were made in the image of God. And He knows every strand of hair on our head. So who are we to reject that which the creator has deemed good. Comparison is the thief of all joy Comparing your texture to others is not acceptable. We all have a different genetic makeup.
