Unheard Voices

A series of conversations from groups in American society who feel invisible in the dominant narrative of race and want to be included. Unheard Voices launched in Spring 2022 include a set of podcasts prepared by Boston University Students in the Cross-Campus Challenge Course titled: Unheard Voices - Deconstructing the Dominant Narrative by Inclusion.

    Voices of Equity: Leading DEI in Times of Backlash How do we champion equity when the tide is turning against it? This episode dives deep into the state of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts amid cultural pushback. Featuring candid interviews with leaders from education, business, and advocacy, we explore how they sustain inclusive practices under pressure. Personal stories, sound design, and rigorous research illuminate both the challenges and the courage behind the fight to keep equity alive.

    Stolen People on Stolen Land: Uncovering America’s Foundational Hypocrisy

    What happens when immigration policy erases the land’s original caretakers? This provocative episode challenges the moral logic of American immigration by confronting its settler-colonial origins. Using music, archival clips, and testimony, the team unpacks how U.S. law upholds settler power while ignoring Indigenous suffering—especially violence against Native women. This episode is both a history lesson and a call to decolonize justice.

    Breaking Barriers: ICE, Policy, and the Immigrant Narrative

     Team: Breaking Barriers In this urgent conversation on immigration enforcement, we center the voices of those most impacted by ICE raids and punitive policies. With insights from protest movements, immigrant communities, and a former ICE agent, this episode confronts how immigrant stories are erased, criminalized, or co-opted. We ask: How can media protect immigrant rights, amplify truth, and resist fear-based policymaking?

    A conversation with BU's own Kasim-Seann - perspectives on today's education and mental health.

    Hear Kasim, a student in the Master's Program in Counseling Psychology and Human. Development share his lived experiences and his take as an African American male navigating the complex bureaucracies of schools and universities.  Listen as out team questions him on how he has been able demonstrate his resiliency. to survive no matter the obstacles and push forward in pursuit of his educational and career goals.  In this podcast the C-town team will inquire Kasims take on what he has been able to observe and provide recommendations for improvement.

    The Boston Re-engagement Center - Helping youth by re-engaging and reinvesting in their education

    The Unheard Voices REC podcast team examines how the Boston Re-engagement  Center (BREC) dedicates countless hours on youth who have disengaged from  schools.  Listen to this powerful conversation with the Center staff and one of their students, as they share their work, challenges and successes.  More importantly, how this inconspicuous, under the radar Center achieves success and help derail the school-to prison pipeline.

    "An in-depth look at Sociedad Latina Inc. - Transforming Latinx youth into the social justice change agents of tomorrow."

    Hear our Unheard Voices Podcast Team of Students examine and explore the work of Sociedad Latina Inc, a Latinx youth serving institution whose mission has been to primarily equip Latinx youth with the engagement tools and leadership skills to challenge systemic barriers in education, health, environment and public safety.  By engaging the youth in leadership roles they seek equity and inclusion of their voices in program and policy decisions in the city of Boston.

    BUxCTown Podcast - A conversation with Marvin Moore long time advocate for youth in the Boston public schools

    Marvin Moore has been in the shoes of the youth he currently serves in Charlestown High School.  He is Climate & Culture Coordinator for the Road to Success Program at Charlestown High School.  Listen to BU students from our Unheard Voices Deconstructing Narratives course at BU interview Marvin on his lived experience and the challenges he faces helping youth navigate the complexities of everyday school life while also instilling hope and creating opportunities and pathways for their success.

    Part 2 - "For Future Generations: Indigenous Perspectives on the Environment"

    Continue to listen to an exploration by indigenous activists from Micronesia  on climate change.   The podcast helps the listener take a  careful look into environmental policy, and the global connection all indigenous populations have with the natural world. The interview with activists at the Micronesia Climate Alliance allowed us to see what activists are doing and how advocacy and learning about the climate crisis is shifting.
