From Iraq to Art Shows | A Veteran’s Reinvention Story
From Iraq to Art Shows | A Veteran’s Reinvention StoryWelcome to Episode 51 with Toby Lyles and Josh Buettner co-founder of J&B Designs. He thought he was going to be a pharmacist. He scored a 96 on the PCAT — higher than the average accepted at the University of Washington. But his GPA wasn’t enough. So he went another route. He joined the Army National Guard a month before high school graduation.Deployed to Iraq in 2006–2007.Deployed again in 2009–2010.Watched a truck explode in front of him.Heard rockets hit 150 yards away.Came home.Got married.Had kids.Built a life. And then, years later — it all came back.A panic attack at a lake.Flashbacks.Hopelessness.PTSD that wouldn’t stay buried. He was medically retired in 2019.Three weeks later? Emergency back surgery.Career gone.Body broken.Identity stripped. So he asked the question most people avoid:“What do I do now?”He didn’t choose the safe option. He didn’t get a job at Walmart. He started making cribbage boards. Not because it was profitable. Not because it was strategic.Because it felt peaceful.Working with wood quieted the noise in his head.He bought a lathe in February 2020 — and everything changed.Woodturning became therapy.Epoxy became art.Imperfections became features. He and his wife, Beth, created a signature “Fragmented Series” — stained-glass-inspired wood and epoxy pieces. At a symposium, renowned wood sculptor Jack Vesteri — whose work appears in the Smithsonian Institution — critiqued their piece in front of 300 people. His verdict?“Ingenious.”That moment mattered. But not as much as this realization:When he chased production and money, he burned out. When he chased passion and therapy, he thrived. Now he sells at art shows — not craft fairs — because he’s not just selling bowls. He’s selling transformation. He’s selling story. He’s selling proof that you can rebuild your life from a rough block. Key Lessons for Young Entrepreneurs:* You can rewrite your life at any time.* Your therapy can become your business.* Art and entrepreneurship are vulnerability + thick skin.* Production kills passion. Purpose sustains it.* You’re not selling a product. You’re selling your story.* Healing can look like building something with your hands.Sometimes your lowest moment becomes your signature series.Episode 051Release Date: March 31, 2026Host: Toby LylesGuest: Josh Buettner/J&B DesignsGet in touch with J&B DesignsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/j_and_b__designs/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jandbdesignswyoEtsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/JandBDesignsWYO?dd_referrer=Thanks for reading! Play as Purpose | Turning Childhood Memories Into Business Ideas
Welcome to Episode 50 with Toby Lyles and Mel Turner, owner of Interaction Amusement Experience. In this episode, we dive into the journey of a 21-year Air Force veteran who transitioned from a structured military life to the unpredictable world of entrepreneurship. From discovering his identity and purpose to overcoming fear and rejection, he shares a deeply personal story about following a vision, creating a family-oriented business, and embracing vulnerability.Listeners will learn:* How family values and childhood experiences can shape entrepreneurial instincts.* The importance of self-awareness, identity, and purpose in making big life decisions.* Practical steps to transform a business idea into reality—even when fear and failure loom large.* How building a strong team and leaning on mentors can turn vision into impact.* Why community and connection are as important as profit in business success. This episode is perfect for young aspiring entrepreneurs who are searching for direction, courage to start something new, and inspiration to create a meaningful impact.Note*Since the recording of this podcast, Mel has made the hard decision to close down IAE in its present form. March 29, 2026 will be their last day, but go say hi and support them as Mel steps into his next iteration. We can support Mel and IAE by purchasing some of the fun inventory, and simply thanking him for taking the courageous step to build something so helpful to our community. Here at Voices on the Wind/TwentyFourSound we believe the story is important. As entrepreneurs we know that not every model sustains, this is why we move and change. Some people quote a high percentage of businesses that fail, and in some ways that is true. What actually happens is we learn and grow, we end something and start another. To end something is as hard as starting. But the process still bears fruit. We are sorry to see IAE close, but look forward to what Mel does next.Episode 050Release Date: March 24, 2026Host: Toby LylesGuest: Mel Turner/ Interaction Amusement ExperienceGet in touch with MelWebsite: https://interactionae.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61567813101153Spotify:Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@twentyfoursound7322/playlistshttps://odysee.com/@VoicesontheWindRumble: https://rumble.com/user/TwentyFourSoundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/toby.lyles.1Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tobyblylesLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/toby-lyles-twentyfoursoundSubstack: https://votw.substack.com/Website: https://twentyfoursound.comThanks for reading! Pride vs Progress | The Lesson Every Graduate Needs
Welcome to Episode 47 with Toby Lyles and Murad Aljalamdeh, founder of Cheyenne Young Professionals. What do you do when you have a degree… but no job?In this episode, Murad shares the raw story of graduating with an engineering degree — only to sit unemployed for nearly a year. Applications sent everywhere. No callbacks. Blame from others. Doubt creeping in.Instead of waiting for the “perfect” opportunity, he made a bold move.He pulled over at a construction site.He walked up and asked for a job.Not an engineering job. Any job. That decision changed everything. From supervising attendance sheets to being recruited into the electrical engineering team… Murad proves that “momentum starts with humility”.But the story doesn’t stop there. After fighting through the struggle himself, he noticed something:So many fresh graduates were stuck — overwhelmed, blamed, and told not to “take jobs beneath their degree.”So at just 25 years old, he launched a nonprofit to help young engineers build soft skills, navigate the job market, and discover emerging industries like solar energy. One year later?A former student called him — not to ask for help — but to say thank you.He had started his own solar installation company. That moment sparked something bigger. After moving to Cheyenne, Murad faced a new challenge: starting over in a new town. No network. No built-in circle. Just an idea.So he did what most people are too afraid to do.He posted online asking for volunteers for an organization that didn’t even exist yet.No meetings. No followers. Just belief.Today?• 400+ followers• 50+ formal members• A full leadership team• Sponsorship pathways to major conferencesThis episode is about:* Starting before you’re ready* Taking “small” jobs that lead to big opportunities* Why pride blocks progress* The power of community building* Delegating instead of building a one-man show* Why hunger beats credentials* And how helping others can build your own legacyIf you’re 18–25 and waiting for the perfect moment…This is your sign.Start.Episode 047Release Date: March 3, 2026Host: Toby LylesGuest: Murad Aljalamdeh/ Cheyenne Young ProfessionalsGet in touch with Murad and Cheyenne Young ProfessionalsFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/CheyenneYoungProfessionalsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/cypgwy/Thanks for reading! Building Trust Before Success | How Opportunity Really Starts
Welcome to Episode 43Most people don’t talk about the moment *before* everything changes—the uncertainty, the quiet risk, the leap that doesn’t come with a guarantee. This episode lives in that moment. It’s the story of leaving a comfortable career path, saying yes to a call that didn’t make sense on paper, and moving to a new town with nothing but belief, preparation, and work ethic. No industry experience. No built-in network. Just a willingness to show up—again and again.Through long days, rejection, self-doubt, and relentless consistency, this episode reveals how real momentum is built: not through shortcuts, but through relationships, service, and trust. It’s a reminder that success doesn’t come from having it all figured out—it comes from staying in the game long enough for things to compound. If you’re early in your journey, questioning your path, or wondering if the leap is worth it—this story is for you. Abandoned Malls, Big Dreams | How Draven Built a YouTube Channel and Monetized It
Toby is joined today by Draven Starr, the creator behind Optopolis, a popular YouTube channel focused on urban exploration and documenting retail history. From his childhood fascination with traffic signs and city building to creating over 100 videos exploring abandoned retail spaces, Draven shares the behind-the-scenes journey of how he turned his passion into a growing platform.“I started finding interest in like exploring of abandoned places specifically. I’d see videos of people going inside of abandoned places in my video games. I don’t know what was it, maybe around 2018, I started to really find interest in more retail specific topics.”“So it was just an abandoned space that intrigued me. It had been vacant for as long as I can remember. ...And I stumbled across the fact that the Walmart logo was there. And that just threw me off. Was like, what? I don’t remember that being there. I don’t remember Walmart ever having anything at that space.”“So, you know, I guess that’s kind of a little bit of my reasoning for doing videos these days is that nothing lasts forever. And even if it lasts for a long time, it’s still kind of cool to be able to look back and see what things looked like… of course nowadays I do a lot more stuff around current events, so it helps get the word out as well more about what’s happening in the Cheyenne community. And really any city beyond that, but Cheyenne’s kind of my home base.”Episode 035Release Date: December 9, 2025Host: Toby LylesGuest: Draven StarrGet in touch with DravenLinkTree - https://linktr.ee/optopolisYoutube - https://www.youtube.com/OptopolisFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/theOptopolis/Reply to this email to get in touch with TobyListen at a link below: Spotify:Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@twentyfoursound7322/playlistsRumble: https://rumble.com/user/TwentyFourSoundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/toby.lyles.1Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tobyblyles This is a public episode. The Art of Reinvention | Starting Over With Momentum
The Art of Reinvention | Starting Over With MomentumWelcome to Episode 33.Toby is joined today by Lexie Garrett, owner of Alexis Drake, a company dedicated to high quality hand made bags, designed and created in her studio in Wyoming.Lexie tells the story behind the story. Starting as an art major, creating jewelry, becoming a mother and how every season, every pivot, grew her and led to Alexis Drake. “Everyone else was sculpting these huge, beautiful cheetahs, and I just couldn’t make it work. Everything I made was two-dimensional — until my professor said, ‘I think I know someone who can fix you.’”“I think that one of the biggest milestones for any artist is when you’re really confident in what you do and you’re okay with somebody saying, you know, I really don’t like that or it’s just not the right fit for us. And so that’s a good thing. I think when we start making stuff and you start perfecting the collections that you’re making, you realize that you’re the fit. You’re the fit.”“My husband looked at my reusable grocery bag and said, ‘Can you please just go buy a purse?’ I couldn’t find one I liked — so I started making my own.”“When someone says, ‘Your bags are too expensive,’ I say, ‘I know — because we make them.’”Episode 033Release Date: November 25, 2025Host: Toby LylesGuest: Lexie GarrettGet in touch with LexieWebsite - https://alexisdrake.comFB - https://www.facebook.com/wearalexisdrakeInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wearalexisdrake This is a public episode. Chasing the Ride
Welcome to Episode 32.Toby is joined today by Dennis Humphrey of Capitol Roofing. Capitol Roofing started as a side hustle to get from rodeo to rodeo, now it has been in business over 40 years and has earned the trust of a community. Listen in as Dennis shares the stories of his beginnings and what drives him to this day. “When I was home I would work and we’d bring some cowboys home and we’d roof some houses. They’d stay with me for a couple days, we’d roof a house or two and get some money and go ride some more bulls and bucking horses.”“After 40 years of being in business, I’m convinced and I think our stats will show this that probably upwards of 70 plus percent of the business that Capital Roofing does is either from repeat customers and or referrals of repeat customers.”“...when people come in there and trust you first like that, those are the ones you for sure want to take extra care, don’t take advantage of anybody. And I am 100 % convinced that if you do the right thing long enough consistently, success will find you. I believe that money and wealth is a byproduct of the service first.”“I think my...free spirit, if you will, kind of led me to be looking for something more to where I can kind of control my time and to a large degree even my income.”Episode 032Release Date: November 18, 2025Host: Toby LylesGuest: Dennis HumphreyGet in touch with DennisWebsite: https://www.capitolroofinginc.comFB: https://www.facebook.com/capitolroofing This is a public episode. The Courage to Start
Welcome to Episode 31.Toby is joined today by Chef Petrina Peart owner of Gaiya’s Harvest. A contestant on Yes, Chef, former Air Force and a creator of intimate gatherings around food. Chef Petrina has quite the story full of calculated risk and pleasant surprises. Listen in to how she describes the power of food and gathering people around a table. “And it’s funny how food can evoke that kind of emotion from people. I one time made someone cry with a pesto.”“...Food is the only art that incorporates all five senses. And I always tell people that because you can literally transform someone’s mood and their entire being with a meal.”“So we would have different chefs that would host different pop-ups in different venues, not always a restaurant. Sometimes someone’s home, someone’s backyard, anywhere from three to seven courses. And just like, you could collab with different chefs to do it, or you could just, you know, invite people to your home to do it. And so I fell in love with that scene and I started doing that same thing at my house.”Episode 031Release Date: November 11, 2025Host: Toby LylesGuest: Chef Petrina PeartGet in touch with Chef PetrinaWebsite: https://gaiyasharvest.comFB: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100054232747402Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gaiyasharvest This is a public episode. From Chaos to CEO
Welcome to Episode 30.Toby is joined today by Ashley Savage, owner of Hollowberry Manor, a women’s creative retreat venue. Join us for part 2 with a deeper focus on mental health. A diagnosis doesn’t have to be a limiting factor, it can be the understanding that leads us to our greatest place of thriving.“I stood in the middle of my house for 10 minutes because I couldn’t figure out if it would be more efficient to go out the front door or the back door. I wanted to start in the front yard and set my phone and my water down. But I had to go to the backyard to get my gardening shoes and my gloves. So which one? Which way do you go? And I spent 10 minutes and I would literally take two steps this way, two steps that way, two steps this way, two steps that way. And I was stuck in this loop.”“Everything I read was me to a T. And I joined some Facebook groups and started reading stories of other women, same boat as me, you being diagnosed after age 35. And there’s reasons for that. ADHD wasn’t diagnosed in little girls in the 80s because it didn’t present the same as boys. It didn’t exist basically. Yeah, it was very unacknowledged and unrecognized. And so we’ve got all these women in my generation who are discovering this about themselves. It’s changing their lives. And so it looks like an epidemic, but really it’s just a massive discovery, social discovery. And so reading stories of these other women who their lives are also being changed and how they’re learning to, for lack of a better word, cope with life. know, the world isn’t really designed for us, and so we figure out ways to cope. And I’ve been doing that my whole life. I just didn’t understand what I was doing.”“...it’s been an incredible transition for me to know that my brain can work the way it’s supposed to when the conditions are right.”“...when I’m here at the house, I don’t need to take my medication. And it’s weird, but in a positive, incredible way.”Episode 030Release Date: November 4, 2025Host: Toby LylesGuest: Ashley Savage (Part 2)Get in touch with AshleyWebsite: https://hollowberrymanor.comFB: https://www.facebook.com/HollowberryManorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hollowberrymanor This is a public episode. Building a Business with ADHD
Welcome to Episode 29.Toby is joined today by Ashley Savage, owner of Hollowberry Manor, a women’s creative retreat venue. Ashley hosts groups for scrapbooking, crafting or just simply to hang out with friends for a weekend and play games. A safe and beautiful getaway to create and refresh. Listen in to how the house that would become the Manor appeared in dreams and visions and became reality. “I have a very entrepreneurial background. It’s in my genes, my maternal line for many generations. The women in my family, we love this kind of stuff. Selling, just business connections, all of it.”“It was in my dreams at night. I was having visions during the day...I can envision it being the retreat. I could see women in it. could see the rooms. Some of the rooms were like, this is what I want to look like. It was odd and incredible. And I know that sounds crazy, but I’m very serious.”“We bought it in January, January, right in the middle. I had my open house on March 8th and my first guests in April and I could take up to 12 guests at that point. And the reception was fantastic. The support from the crafting community is amazing. Word was spreading. And they knew the house wasn’t done. Not everything’s perfect. And they knew what they were getting into as being some of the first guests. Overcoming the Crushing Weight of Failing
Welcome to Episode 28. Toby is joined today by Brad Koch, owner of Game Masters for Part 2. Brad shares how mental health and finding support was a big part of launching his business and succeeding. Is ADHD a disability? Or a superpower? Brad has something to say about that. “I have three boys, you know, they’re in their twenties and someday I’ll probably have grand kids. What am I doing? I’m not setting them off for success. There’s that fear. The mental health is there. When you’re constantly getting rejection and rejection and rejection, you can justify it all you want, but no matter who you are, that’s going to wear down on you.” “ADHD has been a part of my life since 1988. It is a superpower, it’s blessing and a curse. I never would have been able to have the energy to do both the full-time job and this, but also how many things that I forget. I’m oh, we’ve got to set up this account or we’ve got to, it’s, hey, I should do the schedule. So it’s one those things of the mental health part of it is huge. I’ve been in a therapeutic journey starting when I got laid off.” “I can’t stress enough how much that’s been for me as a person, as a man, as a husband. And honestly, as a business owner and as a leader here, I can tell you, I know many people that worked for me over the decade at GameStop, I’m still friends with them. They would not recognize me as the leader here because of the mental health part of it and learning and becoming a better person.” “These are all hobbies and hobbies are a great way for people to come together. It’s a general common ground. We talked about mental health. I’m very neurodivergent. almost a lot of people I know. I always jokingly say the Venn diagram of neurodivergence in gamers is a perfect circle. And the reason why is regardless of where we are, we have something in common.” Episode 028 Release Date: October 21, 2025 Host: Toby Lyles Guest: Brad Koch (Part 2) Get in touch with Brad https://www.gamemasterscheyenne.com FB - https://www.facebook.com/GameMastersCheyenne Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/gamemasterscheyenne This is a public episode. But the Fun!!!
Welcome to Episode 27.Toby is joined today by Brad Koch, owner of Game Masters. Brad shares how various experiences hobbies and skills led to the business idea and after a long stent of no call backs from job interviews the timing felt right. An idea became a business with the help of some local resources, community and some good old hustle. Listen in and be inspired by Brad’s story and how he created a place for community. “So I was looking in Salt Lake, I was looking in Pittsburgh, I was looking in Charlotte, because I was looking for places with more opportunities, because I kept striking out, striking out, striking out. Couldn’t figure it out. And then it was a off the cuff, just maybe I should open a game store. And I don’t even think she looked up from her phone. She goes, why don’t you?”“...you want to be realistic in projections and you’re like, can this work? And you’ve got all those nerves in your stomach. But when you put your heart and soul into it, I really do believe that if you build it, they will come. And the community has just shown that if you, if you scratch that itch and you do what they need, just, it, it snowballs and then you just got to hang on.”“First off, to get that kind of vote of confidence from your spouse is amazing. Again, as I said, she’s got her MBA, she’s the smart one. She put us in contact with the SBDC, the Small Business Development Council. We did some market research. We knew there was already some game stores downtown, but there was no retro video game stores. There was no place that really did cards and games the way we did. And we looked into it and we were like, it could be feasible.”Episode 027Release Date: October 14, 2025Host: Toby LylesGuest: Brad Koch (Part 1)Get in touch with Bradhttps://www.gamemasterscheyenne.comFB - https://www.facebook.com/GameMastersCheyenneInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/gamemasterscheyenneSBDC - https://wyomingsbdc.org/ This is a public episode. Welcome to Episode 26.Toby is joined today by Vante Anderson, owner of Wyoming Wave Studios. Listen in to his story, how he went from A to B. “I want you to leave happy when you leave the studio. I want you to be able to tell your friends about what you just recorded. I wanted to know what my sound was like. And I couldn’t really understand that without the equipment”“I started off mixing hip hop, that’s all I mix. Now I mix everything. Bring a mariachi man in here, I’ma mix them. Bring me a rock band, I’ma mix them. You bring me some hip hop, I’ma mix them. You bring me a uh country singer, I’ma mix them. Starting with $300. Finding Your Passion and Pursuing it.
Welcome to the beginning of Season 3 with Episode 25.Toby is joined today by Mayor Patrick Collins, owner of the Bicycle Station. Long before he entered city leadership, Patrick started a business. The Bicycle Station has been serving the city of Cheyenne for over 40 years. Living in a city, raising a family, owning a business all led to a bigger picture to impact a city and small businesses. Listen in to hear more about a fellow small business owner turned Mayor. “And we started. My wife was literally in the hospital having our son, our first son, and I quit my job and we started a bike shop.” “I'd worked in the market for a long time, so I knew the customers and I knew what needed to be done. And I think having an owner in the store versus a chain store, there's a difference between having an owner and a manager in the store. And I thought we could take advantage of that and have proved to be true. I mean, the very first day we sold the bike.” “I've been out of the bike shop for five years now... Season Two Finale!!!
Welcome to Episode 24 of Voices on the Wind with host Toby Lyles, sponsored by artist Denise Patton from Art at the Hynds. Connect with Denise on FB @ https://tinyurl.com/ArtatthehyndsWelcome to the season finale of Season 2. We had on so many amazing guests this season. From just beginning businesses to businesses with 4 generations of legacy. Join Toby Lyles and Maverick Lyles as they discuss season 2 in review and share their takeaway from each guest. “He learned the skills and it gave him the confidence. So moving actually gives us the confidence, even though sometimes we want to wait and plan. So planning is obviously very important, but sometimes movement gives us that confidence.” – Maverick Lyles“I know Tom because he took one of my classes on how to do podcasting. And he was willing to go get educated in something that he wanted to do. And he took action. And he's pointed out to me, not all of my students, start podcasts. But he has started a podcast and his podcast, Son of a Poor Man, is doing very well.” – Toby Lyles“They really showed me a good example of what that looks like. Bringing people, helping them, everyone sees them, they're advertising them, they're making them look good. And they're sharing stories that are helping new people launch and have an idea. in return, people are like, yay, thank you.” – Maverick Lyles“Yeah, on that note of him starting his own comedy club, I just underlined on my notes, do your own thing. Do your own thing. Are you trying to, you know… Are you trying to become known for something? Are you trying to get into a certain industry? It's a whole lot easier. He found it a lot easier to instead of just trying to get into all the comedy clubs, he started a comedy club and then got comedian Bob Saget to his comedy club.” – Toby LylesEpisode 024Release Date: September 23, 2025Host: Toby LylesGuest: Maverick Lyles This is a public episode. Leading Under Fire
Welcome to Episode 23 of Voices on the Wind with host Toby Lyles, sponsored by artist Denise Patton from Art at the Hynds. Connect with Denise on FB @ https://tinyurl.com/ArtatthehyndsToby is joined today by Courtney Shillenn, owner of Drop N Dash.Courtney’s laundromat is the newest in town. She talks about her personal reasons for starting the business, larger community vision and airs out some of the challenges she faced going through inspections and licensing. In the end she persevered and has launched a laundromat/social gathering place. “I felt like I had enough liquidity. I'd run the numbers. I figured I could float the cost that I had and my personal costs for about 12 months. Worst case scenario. So I thought I was good. And so signed the lease, got the general contractor in there, and then the problems with the permit started.”“So turns, so usually it's every machine in the store goes around once through one cycle. I have 24 washers in the store. So a turn would be 24 cycles, one on every machine. And I just figured that every 24 cycles is a single turn. And so if they each rent on average three times a day, that's kind of my break even to cover my business costs and just mostly my big business costs like my loan, my rent, my utilities.” “...we get older people who are living on their own in apartments are coming in and they're not getting a lot of social interaction because they're not working anymore. And it's something that they have to come do. Right. And so then that's an opportunity to make that a useful time for them because a lot of times they're socially isolated. And so if we can make that something that kind of fills in some of those gaps that society has left, then all the better.”Episode 023Release Date: September 16, 2025Host: Toby LylesGuest: Courtney ShillennGet in touch with Courtneyhttps://dropndashcheyenne.com/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/DropNDash This is a public episode. Her story is about legacy, baby step risk taking and building relationships that grow a business and a city. Listen in to her story and be inspired to take your own baby step today. “I don't know. I don't know what he saw in me, if he just felt like I could do that or maybe I had the personality to do something like that. But I was not, when he asked me to help him with this, I was not a risk taker.”“Take baby steps. And so every time we made a move or we did something and expanded or whatever, it was because we took baby steps and we kind of watched what was happening with the business. And so we were like, hey, it's growing. I think it's time to do this or hey, it's growing. I think it's time to take on that.”“Our customers, our fantastic customers, you know, they help me beyond anything because theywould come in and say, Susan, I'm looking for a purple spatula. Have you seen one? No, but I'llstart looking. You know, hey, Susan, I'm looking for a mug with a tea strainer in it. Have you seenone? VOTW 021 | When the Prison Tells You To Start a Business P2 with Dominic Syracuse
Welcome to Episode 21 of Voices on the Wind with host Toby Lyles, sponsored by artist Denise Patton from Art at the Hynds. Connect with Denise on FB @ https://tinyurl.com/ArtatthehyndsToby is joined today by Dominic Syracuse for part two of their inspiring interview. “You know, within a year and a half of doing stand-up, I found myself running my own comedy club and opening for Bob Saget. Isn't that crazy? And the way all that happened was, you know, the pandemic happened and the prison shut down. We weren't allowed in anymore, right? Because of COVID. All of LA shut down. It became a ghost town. Came back to Cheyenne and... My joke was yeah, it's a perfect place to quarantine because in order for us to be six feet apart we got to come 20 feet closer to each other. Yeah, so I come back to Wyoming and I was calling, you know, my principal at the prison and stuff and I was like when is it gonna open again? When am I gonna get back to work? You know, and he goes, you know, he's like, I don't know that we're gonna open back up the program might dissipate we might lose our grant, but he's like you should really make your own business...”“I just thought it was going to be a place for me to practice my stand up. I did not intend for this to be anything more than that. I was like, yeah, I'll come in on a dead night, like a Tuesday. We'll do it. Well, the thing was, there was nothing else going on. So a bunch of people show up. had the COVID limit was like 60 people. 60 people show up. We didn't even have furniture. We had to borrow furniture from the Plains hotel next door.”“The business I built and my comedy career started taking off at the same time. It's kind of like, have you ever heard the bamboo analogy? Slow growth, but it's really strong? Exactly. It takes like six years to till the soil and nothing sprouts. But then as soon as it sprouts, it goes like a foot a day...a 15 year success...overnight success.”Episode 021Release Date: September 2, 2025Host: Toby LylesGuest: Dominic Syracuse (Part 2)Get in touch with Dominichttps://www.cognitivebehavioraltheater.comhttps://www.dominicsyracuse.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/dominicsyracuseYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@DominicSyracuse This is a public episode. VOTW 020 | Can Sharing Your Story Start a Business and Stop a Murder? Part One with Dominic Syracuse
Welcome to Episode 20 of Voices on the Wind with host Toby Lyles, sponsored by artist Denise Patton from Art at the Hynds. Connect with Denise on FB @ https://tinyurl.com/ArtatthehyndsToby is joined today by Dominic Syracuse an actor, stand up comedian, cognitive behavioral specialist and owner of Cognitive Behavioral Theater. They discuss accidental starts and how fun is a big first step toward healing.“I was able to grow up in this atmosphere of just pure creativity and ideas. Imagination...comes from the word image, and it means we have foresight. We have the ability to see things that aren't there. And if we can see them and then write it down and then make it happen, we have that ability. And when I teach people, I always say, you know, you are the genie. You are the magician.”“I can get on stage and do my thing and tell my stories and there's no one who can tell me I'm to this. I'm to that. Exactly. And, interesting, all the stuff that the casting directors would say about you, you know, you're too short or you're too square or you too. This is the perfect material for stand up, you know? So, so now I get up on stage and I just start rifling off all these short jokes or all these, you know, Italian jokes or whatever. And I'm just ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba.Although I didn't know at the time that I was also learning a brand new craft, you know, starting from scratch, learning this brand new craft.”“Stella Adler had this philosophy that growth as an actor and growth as a human being are synonymous. What that means is the more life experience you have, the more you can draw on as an actor. Right? So, she started this program called the Outreach Program, which taught acting in maximum security prisons, in homeless shelters, and in rehabilitation centers. Right? And it was this way of sharing the therapeutic experience of acting...So they do two days in the men's maximum security, then three days in the women's facility. And we'd go do these acting workshops. And we'd put on shows in front of the cell block. So they'd turn their life story into five minute shows in front of the cell block. And we got to, and I loved it so much. I loved it so much. What I would do, not kidding, is I would literally sell my blood to justify the amount of time that I had to take off work. I still have my mark from selling blood to like go do this. And so I've always been drawn towards it. And wanting to help with any kind of injustice or any kind of anything.”“I'm like, that is the power of sharing your story. Right? In acting, you know, what we don't want is we don't want what's called two dimensional characters. That's melodrama, right? That's the good guy, the bad guy. He's the bad guy because he's bad. You know, she's the helpless maiden who just can't wait to be saved. That's what dehumanizes people. Because when you hear their story, it humanizes them.”Episode 020Release Date: August 26, 2025Host: Toby LylesGuest: Dominic Syracuse (Part 1)Get in touch with Dominichttps://www.cognitivebehavioraltheater.comhttps://www.dominicsyracuse.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/dominicsyracuseYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@DominicSyracuse This is a public episode. VOTW | 019 Can You Change a City Because of a Weird Dream?

Connect with Denise on FB @ https://tinyurl.com/ArtatthehyndsToby is joined today by Harvey Deselms owner of Deselms Fine Art and Custom Framing. Harvey is well known for bringing bronze statues to the city of Cheyenne. He had a dream that he has made reality with over 80 bronze statues to date and a goal of 100 coming in the near future. He speaks of community, how to build it and why it’s so important. “...it's kind like my Facebook page. I have a Deselms Fine Art, one that I hardly ever use, but I post everything on Harvey Deselms because I'm building a relationship with the artists. I'm building a relationship with the clients, with just random friends that I have. pop in on that. And so it's about interpersonal reactions, I think.” – Harvey Deselms“Chris said, ‘I got this idea, let's put a monument to Lane Frost. was the year after Lane was killed in the arena.’ And they said, well, that's a great idea. Go raise money for it and we'll take it. said, oh, okay. So he came up with this plan to raise the money and I helped him with that. And it happened. So the committee said, yeah, okay, we'll take it. We said we would. And so the only thing the committee paid for was the base. I raised the other 250 some odd thousand, you know, on his own and then I helped sell some of the bronzes. So I knew it could be done. So I just kind of put that in my backpack of tricks for later.” -Harvey Deselms“I had a good sense of community in Albin and Burns because we, know, the neighbor needed help, we'd go help the neighbor. And there were nine people in my graduating class and we always did things together, kindergarten through 12th grade in the same building. So we helped the little kids, you know, it was just a community, it was all about community.” -Harvey DeselmsEpisode 019Release Date: August 19, 2025Host: Toby LylesGuest: Harvey DeselmsGet in touch with Harvey DeselmsFB - https://www.facebook.com/harvey.deselmshttps://deselmsfineart.com/ This is a public episode. And I think we've created this like library of episodes that people can go to to learn about anything Cheyenne.” “Everybody, you know, we all have our things. And what's very interesting, the process through which people have to go through to grow is the same, whether you are homeless and trying to get stable all the way to being a successful business person trying to reach the next level. It takes a lot of the same mindset, the same, you know, it's just, choose your heart, where's your fight at?”“So I thought the podcast would be a great way for people to get to know me and who I'm about. So like we were joking earlier, even people that we don't know that listen to the podcast, they're getting to know us and that's the ultimate goal, right? He is joined today by Eric McDonald owner of Custom Home Painters of Cheyenne. Eric talks about the strengths and weaknesses every entrepreneur faces when starting a business. “That was probably my biggest thing that was almost, I was just fooling myself that like, the reason why I'm so successful is because I'm independent, I'm hardworking and I could, could just get anything done. But the problem is, like when you are so capable at doing stuff, you don't allow other people to help you. And pretty soon, it's impossible to get the scale any higher, because, I mean, you're only one person, you're only human.” – Eric McDonald“And so I wouldn't say fear, probably one of the things that probably held me back, I mentionedindependence. When you're running a company, and where it's all about you, independence can be a good thing.
