Are Pistols OP?
Pistols have remained a point of contention in CS:GO for some time now, with everyone from players and analysts to even your average Joe on reddit weighing in to impart their views. Many struggle to reconcile the handguns’ cheap costs with their ability to quickly dispatch players holding far more expensive investments. Others despise the seemingly random and spammable nature of the weapons, citing a lack of skill in their use.

If you decided to take part in this Major’s Pick‘Em challenge, I can only feel sorry for you. The PGL Major has proven to be the most unpredictable in CS:GO’s history, with favourites dropping at every stage. With the likes of G2, Cloud9 and NaVi falling in the group stage, the Major looked ripe for an Astralis or SK final, only to find them matched in the quarterfinals. The playoffs continued the trend, with no one predicting a Gambit-Immortals finale. Even then, Immortals looked to subvert expectations, overwhelming Gambit 16-4 on Cobblestone. In the end, Gambit’s strategy won out, finally earning Zeus a long deserved Major title in his third attempt.

Stuck between ESL One Cologne and the PGL Krakow Major, this was never going to make for the most action-packed week of CS. In fact, it’s largely proven an affair of embarrassment, with a number of teams producing some shockingly poor performances at Dreamhack Valencia. Fortunately, all this confusion has given NiP the opportunity to flex their new muscles and take the prize. Second place went to underdogs, Red Reserve, who took part in the most memorable matches of the tournament. Let’s look back at the key moments you might have missed.

TLDW July 10th
It was the Major that wasn’t really a Major. ESL One Cologne returned this week and as always it delivered incredible action, but this time only $250,000 was on the line instead of $1m and the title of world champions. Still, even without the Major title, this was one hell of a tournament, and one that showed how much things have changed in the last month. The Astralis era is on the rocks and the Brazilians are back on top. Outside Cologne, teams switched orgs, tournaments announced invites and Valve brought out its biggest banhammer yet.

Major Qualifiers are great for neutrals, but if you support one of the teams involved then they can be horrific. Fans of GODSENT, Immortals, Renegades and even Cloud9 were all put through the ringer this weekend at what was undoubtedly one of the best Major qualifiers we’ve seen. Big names dominated, but the underdogs threw in plenty of surprises and some crucial matchups went the distance. Overall it was a tense affair.

ECS Season 3 finals at Wembley took a while to get into the swing of things last week but by the weekend everything was kicking off, eventually closing out with one of the best Counter-Strike matches we have ever seen. On top of ECS, we had the final day of DreamHack Summer right at the start of the week, where the winners were crowned and we got a glimpse of who can really challenge the big names at the Krakow Major. Then there was the expected drama of roster changes, and also the more serious matter of some unpaid prize money. Then to top it all off there was a patch that removed one of our favorite things in all of CS.

The teams for the PGL Major Krakow Qualifier have finally been decided. After weeks of open qualifiers, closed qualifiers and the Minors themselves, the final teams have been confirmed, and we have one pretty stacked Major qualifier to look forward to. There were shock early exits, some surprising teams who made it through, and more than a few massive plays that made picking the best one really quite challenging. This week also saw friberg leave Ninjas in Pyjamas, and we got pretty emotional when they released a tribute video to him. It’s been a big week generally, so let’s break it down.

Who Won the French Shuffle?
In hindsight, the French roster shuffle just after the ELEAGUE Major was a pretty weird situation. It was easily the worst kept secret in esports, with the new French super team – which eventually became G2 Esports – rumored for months beforehand. All that gossip meant a lot of people assumed both G2 and Team EnVyUs would put in a poor performance at the Major, knowing their careers were about to change dramatically. This is exactly what ended up happening, with both teams struggling in Atlanta, and as expected in the days following the event it was confirmed that EnVyUs and G2 would be making roster changes. While it initially looked like there was going to be one new top team in town, we actually ended up with two, thanks to one of the wildest switch-ups in CS history.

There may have been two LANs going on, but this still felt like a quiet week in the world of competitive Counter-Strike. The NA Minor seemed to be done and dusted before it even began, and if any of the teams from the CIS Minor manage to make it to the Major itself then we’ll be available to be knocked over by a feather all summer. Outside of that, the only top-level online competition was the last week of ECS, and pretty much all the final placings were already confirmed, although the repercussions of GODSENT’s surprise victory over FaZe Clan did at least spice up the relegation battle. And of course we’re still playing Operation Hydra, pounding through those Guardian Missions, while Valve, having shipped the operation, evidently has some time on its hands again, because this week also saw the return of the banhammer. And how!

Man, what a week! ESL Pro League Finals, the Asian Minor, a new rivalry, and such an intense concentration of big plays that we feel slightly over the limit. The past seven days have certainly been good for fans of competitive Counter-Strike, and not just the folks watching esports, because of course everyone else got to enjoy the 2v2 Wingman mode in Operation Hydra. There sure was a lot going on, but the ESL Pro League Finals were still the highlight for us. We saw a ton of top action, more than a few close games, and witnessed the birth of a new rivalry between G2 and North that we can’t wait to see continue.
