Wait... Where's Spock?

Space... the final frontier...Nope! Turns out, for Amaya, that "Star Trek: The Original Series" was the final frontier.Thankfully, her father, Mat, is here to change that. Over the next few millennia, Amaya and Mat are going to watch - and podcast their thoughts on - every single episode of Star Trek after TOS, starting with "Star Trek: The Next Generation".Will she find a new love in Data? Can he endure Wesley one more time? And wait...where's Spock?...

  1. 62

    Episode 3.11: The Hunted

This week, Amaia and Mat search for the meaning of life...errr...no, wait...I mean a reason to live...after watching this week's episode - KIDDING! It's not THAT bad...it's not ALL that bad. Though it is extremely hard not to stop yourself repeatedly blinking whenever the main guest star is on screen due to just HOW CLOSE TOGETHER his eyes are...SO close. Nonetheless, they find time to actually touch upon one of the serious issues this episode raises: how is it possible to dedicate almost ONE QUARTER of the running time to a CHASE SCENE...oh! And the problematic treatment of veterans after a war...but mostly the chase scene thing...

  2. 61

    Episode 3.10: The Defector

Amaia and Mat are BACK with a BANG for 2026 - and that bang is Romulan-shaped and pretty bang-y. We get well-tailored outfits, we get political thrills, we get water at exactly 12 onikans - baby!...we get the LOT! We also, unfortunately - for us, anyway - Shakespeare (maybe we would've preferred some more Sherlock Holmes), but there's also top form Steward and a GREAT main guest star. So prepare for warp speed as we commence a new year of "Wait!..where's Spock?"

  3. 60

    Episode 3.09: The Vengeance Factor

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat make quite a lot out of not much at all really, and in doing so realise that they actually enjoyed talking about this episode more than watching it...except for Lisa Wilcox...she's TOTALLY a nailed on chance of making the best guest stars shortlist and we're not even half way through yet. Oh! And the whole post-apolyptic Mad Max action...that was pretty sweet! And all the hair. Head hair, chest hair, hair on hair...SO much hair...

  4. 59

    Episode 3.08: The Price

This week, Amaya and Mat recoil in disgust as Star Trek gets its Tarantino-esque FREAK on, via Troi's oiled-up feet!!! And that's just the cherry on top of a generally creepy sexed-up episode - though that doesn't take away from some actually decent diplomatic negotiation action, and a handful of cracking lines! So grab your KY and vomit bag (or hand cloth) and settle in for the sound of two people dry wretching against the soaring strains of the 'Next Gen' soundtrack.

  5. 58

    Episode 3.07: The Enemy

This week, Amaya and Mat - well, Hell! They have a hoot in the season's best episode, with easily the coldest Worf moment we've ever had, and an absolute masterpiece in redemption from Geordi after last week's horror show. No jokes. That is all. Enjoy!

  6. 57

    Episode 3.06: Booby Trap

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat experience the joys of holodeck beach dating and 4D chess against the background of the remains of a long-dead civilisation...only for it all to come crashing down in a steaming heap of beep-bop technobabble and creepy AI making out. God bless you, Lieutenant La Forge, you deserved SO much better. On the plus side, you do get to hear Mat's brain explode - along with his potty mouth - mutliple times across the duration of the episode.

  7. 56

    Episode 3.05: The Bonding

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat explore Star Trek bondage fan-fic....errr....no sorry! Wrong episode! Bonding! That's it. And they also set a new record for diverging from the actual episode! This one, though, has got the lot: Wes bringing it; Picard bringing it; Troi bringing it...in a bad 1980's therapist way; there's both appropriate and inappropriate touching; aaaaand....CRYING! A LOT of crying... ("You cried"). But WHO cried? You'll have to tune in to find out!

  8. 55

Episode 3.04: Who Watches the Watchers

This week, Amaya and Mat journey into the Prime Directive with one simple mission: for God's sake, try and stop Mat talking SO much about nothing in order to keep the episode under 2 hours...unfortunately, here in the present we know their mission failed. BUT...we get a bit of everything: Buffy (as always); Star Trek: the Motion Picture, aaaand; HOTTEST of hot takes...Patrick Stewart ain't all that in the acting stakes!!! Come at us!!!...also, apologies for the poor audio again - promise it's fixed FOR GOOD going forward!

  9. 54

    Episode 3.03: The Survivors

This week, it's all location, location, location, as Amaia and Mat visit the set of that classic late 70's British post-apoc TV series, Survivors - they WISH (well...Mat wishes). Nope, its a mystery episode, with genocide, aliens, space battles, and BONUS Troi-trauma (Marina Sirtis gets to emote all over the shop), and, what, only the second actual outdoor location of the series so far? Perhaps the biggest mystery, however, is how we will ever get Mat to not constantly repeat himself and just SHUT THE F**K UP?!

  10. 53

Episode 3.02: The Ensigns of Command

On this week's episode, Mat forgets to set up his microphone properly, and so the quality of his audio - not just his commentary - is very poor, AND...he's recovering from an extended sickness, so he sounds like death barely warmed up. So it's up to Amaia to hold it all up, with searing critical insight...mostly about some movies she's seen recently, but she also talks about this episode a bit. And to top it all off, the recording connection went. Now I don't want to say this is going to go down as the Cursed Episode of Wait!...where's Spock...not unless there's extra ad revenue in it, that is...

  11. 52

    Episode 3.01: Evolution

WE'RE BACK for the opening episode of Season 3, and we're here for the new adolescent acne and the new haircuts and the new two-piece uniforms. And, of course, we don't shy away from the big questions: like, what does the first episode of the season augur, and will Wes ever get a date? Tune in and find out - and welcome back!

  12. 51

Season 2 in Review - PLUS AWARDS!

In the final episode of the season, Amaya and Mat wrap up with an overall review of Season 2 - the best bits, the not-so-best bits, the Suzie Plakson bits - our thoughts about Season 3 and what needs to change (hint: MORE Wesley!), AND we have the introduction of the inaugural "Wesley Jumper Awards", served up with a bit of EXTRA CONTROVERSY - ooooooooohhhhh!!! PLUS...stay until the end for our BONUS TRACK!

  13. 50

    Episode 2.22: Shades of Grey

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat go AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!...as they scream into the clip episode void. I mean...what can possibly be said...it isn't good. But their breakdown is so tune in and watch two vaguely adult humans collapse under the weight of so many bottles in the bottle-iest of all bottle shows.

  14. 49

    Episode 2.21: Peak Performance

This week, Amaya and Mat discuss Glenn Morshower...Glenn WHO? I hear you ask. Well, he's only the very lynchpin of the episode, the pivot point around which everything turns, the controlling idea at the heart of this beating story...and he has 7 lines! GENIUS! We also discuss the actual episode at one point. Which is handy...for you, I suppose. And the episode? It's a CRACKER! So tune in, and time out: will Glenn...or won't Glenn?...

  15. 48

    Episode 2.20: The Emissary

On this week's episode, Amaya and Mat discover TRUE LOVE, in the form of a 187cm, half-Klingon, half-Human, ex-love interest of Lieutenant Worf, absolute STUNNER (and I do mean STUN HER)...K'Ehleyr. And, honestly, no words do her justice - perhaps not even this podcast episode...but listen to it anyway...if you ever want to get remotely close to the concept of the truest and purest of loves: the love between two podcast hosts, and an ST: TNG guest star!

  16. 47

    Episode 2.19: Manhunt

This week, Amaya and Mat's joy at the return of Lwaxana is quickly extinguished by the bin fire that is this episode. Still, there Lwaxana, and Lwaxana's dresses, and Lwaxana's saucy asides, and Worf gets some absolutes crackers, and Wes is here...and...and...look, it's a struggle - but, in GREAT NEWS, this one does degenerate into the Buffy/Frasier/Dexter podcast...so there's that. Tune in and watch the flames rise!

  17. 46

Episode 2.18: Up the Long Ladder

This week, Amaya and Mat meet a new Star Trek race, the 'Space Irish', find Riker being a total 'Space Harlot', and learn that Worf and Pulaski are becoming 'Space Buddies' - but hopefully nothing more! In one of the most wide-ranging episodes to date, they manage to alienate several cultural groups, while also having more fun in AGES! Tune in and be offended!

  18. 45

    Episode 2.17: Samaritan Snare

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat discover PURE JOY in the unexpected form of a Picard and Wes team-up, Worf proves again why he's the smartest member of the 'Enterprise' crew, and we say goodbye to a character that found a special place in our hearts...well, Mat's heart...well, not really his heart...

  19. 44

    Episode 2.16: Q-Who?

In this week's episode, Amaya gets uncomfortable with Mat's creepy declarations of love for a guest character, they both get creeped out by the Borg, but in the end, they agree that Whoopi Goldberg is something of a hottie. So, lots of objectification in this one for you, but BEST OF ALL, some controversial* takes on this beloved episode! *not really controversial.

  20. 43

    Episode 2.15: Pen Pals

This week, Amaya and Mat get all hepped up...because WESLEY'S BACK! It's a Wesley episode...or is it? No one seems sure whose episode this one is, but they are sure of one thing: the Prime Directive!...oh wait! Maybe they're not so sure about that. Well, there's one thing we can all agree on, and that's it's okay to rescue children in danger...while leaving their parents to die...errr...no, no! You're going to return the kid...but maybe not completely intact?...anyway, tune in and find out the mess that is made!

  21. 42

    Episode 2.14: The Icarus Factor

This episode, Amaya and Mat...know kung-fu...or, specifically, Anbo-jitsu - the greatest martial art EVER...according to Riker's dad, Kyle! Kyle? Can you believe that?! So weird. Riker has this old man's name, and his dad has this young dude's name. So strange! Oh! Right, yeah, well anyway, we also learn that Worf ( and Klingons in general) might have some sadomasochistic tendencies - I know, colour me shocked! - and that Riker is an angry, angry man deep down...hence the trombone, I suppose?....

  22. 41

    Episode 2.13: Time Squard

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat discover so many new things: Riker's love of cooking; Data's ability to be reticent, and; Picard's murderous desire to destroy the hidden part of his id...preferably with a phaser...and if possible in Shuttle Bay 2. We also learn a lot about the sick bay...like a LOT...many, many times over. But there's plenty interesting here to discuss and debate, so come join us for this one - we're over the halfway mark now!

  23. 40

    Episode 2.12: The Royale

This week, Amaya and Mat BREAK THE RECORDING...well, mostly Amaya...Mat was fairly innocent of any wrongdoing...Anyway, a slightly truncated episode, but we address all the important stuff, like: why do Riker, Worf, and Data always get all the fun; and what exactly *is* the story with Troi's powers. Also, remember to stay right ot the very end for a very special scientific update...only 30 years too late!

  24. 39

    Episode 2.11: Contagion

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat channel their inner 'Sound of Music' love into a podcast about ST: TNG and sing "How Do You Solve a Problem Like The Romulans?", while tossing up whether Data is just a deus ex machina - perhaps having usurped Wesley's role - as well as deciding is Geordi, in fact, the most developed character on the show? You''ll have to tune in and find out what we decide!

  25. 38

    Episode 2.10: The Dauphin

This week, Amaya and Mat learn all about first love, chocolate mousse, Klingon mating rituals, and make the shocking discovery that Wesley Crusher might in fact be...a complete moron! Noooooooo! On the bright side there's Worf getting pervy, as well as Riker and Guinan's "get a room already" flirt fest. But does it all add up to something? You'll have to tune in to find out!

  26. 37

Episode 2.09: The Measure of a Man

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat discover they've watched completely different episodes - sort of! Talk about CONTROVERSY!!! Two WILDLY different responses to a Data-centric episode that should have had them united in their dislike of the android. Instead, they're now dead to one another! Can there ever be a reconciliation? You'll have to listen to find out.

  27. 36

Episode 2.08: A Matter of Honor

This week, Amaya and Mat try to ignore the fact that Americans can't spell 'Honour' properly, and instead focus on the fact that they've arrived at the best episode of the season so far! In this Riker-tastic Klingon-fest, we get action, we get suspense, we get weird Klingon sex stuff, AND... breastfeeding! Qapla'!

  28. 35

    Episode 2.07: Unnatural Selection

Better late than never (right?...), in this week's episode, Amaya and Mat make sure the wait was worth it! We get arguably one of the best scripts we've had to date, we get Mile O'Brien, we get BIG money-on-screen sets, we get actual pathos and character development, we get more Miles O'Brien, aaand...we get CONTROVERSY, as father and daughter debate whether music is little more than a dramatic crutch in film, TV, and possibly life! 😱

  29. 34

    Episode 2.06: The Schizoid Man

This week, Amaya and Mat meet the greatest human mind in the universe...who might also be the dumbest! We also have the long-awaited return of our most popular segment, "Please Fix My Episode", where Amaya rips it all up and puts it back together, while Mat writes fan mail to Paramount Studios about new Vulcan hottie guest star, Lieutenant Selar, and sends it back in time to 1989 with a proposal of marriage...

  30. 33

Episode 2.05: Loud as a Whisper

This week, Amaya and Mat may have just struck "Next Gen" Season 2 GOLD: sensitive treatment of disability - CHECK; genuinely interesting ideas - CHECK; true human moments - CHECK; Data doesn't piss us off - CHECK...I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Well, something may have...but you'll have to tune to find out!

  31. 32

    Episode 2.04: The Outrageous Okona

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat learn want a joke isn't, and what a jerk is...or isn't. In possibly the most oddly structured episodes this season, Billy "The Rocketeer/Clint Webber from "Frasier" Campbell, Teri "Lois and Clark/Desperate Housewives" Hatcher, and some unsupportive supporting cast teach us the importance of making sure you understand what you're actually trying to say when you write a TV script. Thank God for Whoopi Goldberg, who almost saves the day!

  32. 31

    Episode 2.03: Elementary, Dear Data

This week, Amaya and Mat travel back to 19th-century London to discover there's something they hate more than Data...and that's Pulaski! Naaah! She's alright, and so is this episode, until it takes a strange and unforgivable narrative turn for the worse! Still, Holmes and Watson, the Holodeck, Worf dressed up like an Edwardian gentleman...how bad could it really be?...

  33. 30

Episode 2.02: Where Silence Has Lease

In this episode, Amaya and Mat discover that there's arguably something worse than just a bad episode of 'Next Gen': and that is what might be THE most boring episode of the series yet! My God! "Shoot me!" - but not in a 'Arrested Development'/Uncle Jack sense. Just a staright bullet to the brain, please! Though, it is true, that along the way they also discover a love they never knew they had for 'My Little Pony'-faced alien void creatures...

  34. 29

    Episode 2.01: The Child

Amaya and Mat are BACK!...for Season 2 of ST: TNG, and this week they learn all about un-planned parenthood, luxuriate in Riker's new beard, hang out in the spiffy new bar with the spiff new cast member, and go on maybe the least relevant tangent to date as the discuss the comedy stylings of Martin Short...no, not much has changed in the interlude!

  35. 28

    Season One: Re-Rank

In the final episode for this season of "Wait!...where's Spock?", Amaya and Mat look back, misty-eyed - mostly due to having watched too much tv - and re-score all of season one's episodes...particularly the ones we didn't score in the first place. And stay through to the end for the first moment of genuine shock and tears as Mat reads to Amaya the synopsis for Episode One, Season Two...

  36. 27

    Episode 27: The Neutral Zone

This week, Amaya and Mat explore Mat's romantic life, also known as the Completely In Neutral Zone and...wait...no! Sorry! Different show. In this week's episode they finally come face-to-face with this series' overarching nemesis...writers' strikes (UNION PROUD!) Also, there's 80's cryogenics obsession, booze, drugs, country music and, at long last...ROMULANS!!!

  37. 26

    Episode 26: Conspiracy

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat uncover..."Conspiracy", Next Gen's "The Thing" tribute, with enough gore and body horror to leave John Carpenter whimpering in a corner of the room. Along with all the viscera comes a great idea, a really solid script, all of which contributes to what is arguably the best episode of the season...if episodes were measured by the weight of their practical effects.

  38. 25

Episode 25: We'll Always Have Paris

This week, Amaya (and now you) has to put up with Mat doing his dodgy Patrick Stewart impersonation, which is really a dodgy Ian McKellan impersonation from "Lord of the Rings). We also get to see LOTS of Datas (as well as some excellent stuntman tumbling action), creepy Crusher action, and the occasional bit of adult emotional interaction.

  39. 24

    Episode 24: Skin of Evil

This week, Amaya and Mat experience great loss...for Mat, mostly the hour lost watching this episode! But seriously, it's a great case of the parts being better than the sum of the total, but also a time of learning, and they both discover that they love...David Cronenberg's "The Fly"...and f**king "Buffy" comes up again! When will it stop?!!

  40. 23

    Episode 23: Symbiosis

In this week's episode, Amaya and May learn to say "No!...to drugs"...and a HARD no to dodgy PSA announcements masquerading as drama. Seriously though, turns out "Symbiosis" is some good s**t, man, and if you want some meet us 'round the corner for a fix of solidly written drama and great performances...first time's free... ...and apologies for the poor audio...definitely Amaya's fault...

  41. 22

    Episode 22: Arsenal of Freedom

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat learn that a Death Sphere isn't always what it claims to be...like a sphere, for instance...that Crusher and Picard really just need to get a room, and that maybe this episode is "the best" of Season One...oh! And apologies for more 'Buffy' chat and comparisons. Last time, we swear*. * We totally don't swear.

  42. 21

    Episode 21: Heart of Glory

"Maj po" this week from Amaya and Mat, who say "tlhIngan maH" in order that we have "qapla"! Yes, it's our first Klingon episode of the season (and the series), and while Amaya's love of Worf continues to grow, Mat almost spoils - close to 40 years on - the TV mini-series "V" - that's right! It's "Wait...where's Marc Singer?", our new addition to the podcast.

  43. 20

    Episode 20: Coming of Age

This week, Amaya and Mat learn the meaning of self-understanding...as well as just how high Riker can throw his leg over a chair and thrust his crotch at someone! There's also young love, daring rescue, and 'sweet as' Starfleet after-hours fashion, in what amounts to a solid episode...but not without some rewrites, of course.

  44. 19

    Episode 19: Home Soil

This week, Amaya and Mat explore the universe's BIG questions: what actually constitutes *real* life, and; what the Hell was the secret name of this podcast for the last eighteen episodes?! They also find time for some of your two favourite segments: Amaya's Phasers on Fashion and Mat's Minute of Miniatures and Matte Paintings.

  45. 18

Episode 18: When the Bough Breaks

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat pretty much forget everyone's name, confusing characters with actors, then spend quite a bit of time dissecting the social constructs of the High School Musical-verse - but don't worry: they do end up rating episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer...and somewhere in here actually discuss this quite nicely made episode of ST: TNG.

  46. 17

Episode 17: Too Short a Season

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat debate whether Mat is just a young man wearing a lot of prosthetics to appear much older, and, in fact, is not even her father! We also talk about this episode of ST: TNG which, coincidentally, also features unconvincing prosthetics and a storyline that can't make up its mind what theme it wants to settle upon.

  47. 16

    Episode 16: 11001001

On this week's episode, Riker gets his weird on, Mat gets even weirder about Riker's weirdness, then Picard seems to want to join in, and Amaya has to put up with the lot. There's a lot to discuss here, including the possibility that this might be the best episode yet for Season One, and the fact that Amaya might at last be coming around to Data!

  48. 15

    Episode 15: Angel One

This week, Amaya and Mat visit a planet ruled by a matriarchy, in an episode written by a man seemingly with an anti-matriarchal agenda - SHOCK! Stop the presses! Man scared of women! But seriously, there's just a whole lot of confusion going on here, but not without some redeeming qualities...did I mention Riker's nipples?...

  49. 14

    Episode 14: Datalore

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat have to deal with TWO Datas...Day-tahs...Dar-tahs...Day-tahs - WHATEVER! There are two of them...sort of...and it turns out they kind of like both of them. Yup, Brent Spiner is acting up a storm, Wesley is being a "little b*tch" (according to Amaya), and Mat really, REALLY needs to decide how to pronounce Data...and also take better notes when watching an episode...

  50. 13

    Episode 13: The Big Goodbye

In this week's episode, Amaya and Mat learn that Picard does have a sense of humour, that Data CAN be funny, but most of all...that Beverly Crusher is the real QUEEN of COMEDY on ST: TNG. And, like Martin Sheen travelling upriver to kill Marlon Brando in "Apocalypse Now", we travel deep, deep into the treacherous territory of episode rewriting...
