Today we're looking into a major Russian drone and missile attack into Ukraine over the last two days where more than 1,600 munitions were fired into the country. This is more than Iran fired in the opening two days of their war earlier this year and is the highest volume fired by Russia in a two day period since the war began. Overall this shows a widening or expansion of the conflict. It's still early but that sort of thing could help resolve the conflict on favorable terms, but there's still a lot of work to be done. The theatre there had been established as a humanitarian shelter, full of women and children and clearly marked from above. That didn’t matter.On March 16th the Russian Army attacked anyways. According to Amnesty International, two 1,000 lb bombs were dropped on the theater full of civilians. Casualty estimates vary from dozens killed to more than 600 lost in the strike. Part of the confusion there is that the clean up was done by Russian forces, who to this day, deny responsibility.Thankfully people like James Verini have put together incredible accounts from that tragic event, documenting for the world what the brave people in that theater went through before during and after the attack. Crazy story about the two US destroyers that forced the Strait of Hormuz yesterday. Braving Iranian mines, fast boats, drones and missiles, the crews of the USS Mason and USS Truxton made it into the Persian Gulf to extract two US flagged commercial vessels. As daring as this operation was, it's unlikely we're going to see this as a regular move to get ships in and out of the area. For that we're still looking at negotiations which don't appear to be moving really at all. Today we're looking into the resumption of hostilities in the Middle East. Today we're looking into the new deadlines laid out by President Trump for Iran to surrender and open the Strait of Hormuz. A few hours ago he said that 'a whole civilization will die tonight' as we approach the 8pm ET deadline he laid out a few days ago. Iran has responded by cutting off all communications around negotiations and reiterated that they will increase strikes on civilian infrastructure in the region if the US goes down that path.
