What Went Wrong on the Farm Today
by Nick Riggin
This podcast is a daily account of all the things that went wrong in a single day on Riggin Farm. We will also share the wins we had as well, because farming is not all doom & gloom despite it feeling that way sometimes. It is meant to be entertaining, but also educational at times. Starting a first-generation regenerative farm on a shoestring budget is not an easy task, and we want to share our experiences to help others who may be considering starting a farm or homestead, are already in the middle of it, or people who got out of farm life (or homestead life) after too many days like ours.

There's also a live acoustic version of the jingle. What do you think? Any other style you'd like for me to write & record when I have a little extra time (ha!) to work on it?

Expect farm mishaps, hard lessons, tiny wins, and a whole lot of “how is this real life?” Episode 11 - Farmers Market Curveball & Government Obstacles We talk about how the farmers market changed things in a way that throws a wrench into our plans and forces us to pivot (again). If you’ve ever built your week around a system… and then the system changed without warning, you’ll understand the frustration. We also unpack what it’s been like having slow traffic at the farm store lately: how hard it hits when you’ve stocked up, done the work, showed up… and the customers just don’t show. Then we get into a real, honest rant about how government rules and red tape can make it ridiculously challenging for small farms to survive, especially when you’re trying to do things the right way, stay compliant, and still make enough money to keep going. If you’ve ever felt squeezed between rising costs, changing rules, and an unpredictable customer base… this episode is for you. 👇 Drop a comment: What’s the biggest “curveball” you’ve had to deal with lately? 👍 If you enjoy the real behind-the-scenes side of farming, hit like, subscribe, and share this episode.

Each episode is a quick, honest, and occasionally ridiculous recap of the curveballs that come with raising animals, growing food, and keeping a farm (and your sanity) running. Expect farm mishaps, hard lessons, tiny wins, and a whole lot of “how is this real life?” Today’s episode is brought to you by the thing every farm runs out of first… time. Between keeping the farm store open, answering messages, restocking freezers, and baking fresh sourdough, the “productive farm day” we planned turns into a chaotic game of whack-a-mole. We’re trying to do the chores, the maintenance, the animal care, the admin work, the marketing… and somehow still have enough energy left to be humans. Spoiler: we don’t. I’m running on fumes in this one, but we talk honestly about what it actually takes to keep the doors open, why the store is both a blessing and a bottleneck, and how sourdough (as much as we love it) has a way of hijacking the entire schedule. If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing a million things and still behind, this episode is for you.

Expect farm mishaps, hard lessons, tiny wins, and a whole lot of “how is this real life?” Episode 3: The Dairy Barn That Never Was In this episode, I’m giving you the uncensored dairy update: we never got to build the dairy barn because last year’s construction projects went wildly over budget, so now I’m out here milking our cow outside in a mud pit like it’s 1847. That means wading through mud and manure to get to the stanchion, then hauling all the milking gear and milk uphill to the wash/pack building to clean everything and package it, because the farm doesn’t believe in “convenience,” only character development. If you’ve ever had a “this is not what I signed up for” day, welcome… you’re among friends.

Yep. I’m okay, but it was a very loud reminder that electricity does not negotiate. In this episode, I walk through what happened, what we think caused it, what I did immediately after, and what I’m doing differently from here on out so it doesn’t happen again.Important: I’m not an electrician and this episode isn’t instructional, it’s a farm story + a safety reminder.
