Winnie the Librarian

Even though it's one of our most popular graphic novel series, I had never looked twice at the Sunny series. That was until I read a School Library Journal article about an attempt to ban it.To my surprise, this book was funny and thoughtful. It depicts a little girl, Sunny, who is sent to spend her Summer with her grandfather because her older brother at home is dealing with substance abuse problems. I found it to be an age-appropriate narrative that would be valuable for young readers.

A book I'm nostalgic for was just released as a graphic novel- so I'm taking a break from my 'regularly' scheduled dragon books to talk about it.

Sister: I see him everywhere... him being harry du boisMy little sister tasked me with finding an Irish book for her to read, so I talked her into reading Tana French's the Dublin Murder Squad with me.In this episode I recomend her two series, Dublin Murder Squad and the Cal Hooper Trilogy, as well as her one stand-alone, The Witch Elm. These are all murder mysteries so I do my best to avoid spoilers.

If you recall, I had a weird fixation on Glacier- the toxic yuri IceWing queen who Darkstalker magically murdered with a racially targeted plague. Well now that she's gone we're left with the 7th best Queen (out of 8 total Queens, and I'll remind you one is a genocidal slave owner), Snowfall. Can she live up to her mother? And what's she going to do about all these weird bug dragons?

It's been a while, so I'm coming back with a short one. Presley has wanted to be an equestrian her entire life, but her mom's fear of horses has kept her away from them. Until now, when she tags along with her vet stepfather to a local stable. Can Presley change her mom's mind- and is her mom onto something with how dangerous horses can be?

Our heroes have tactfully retreated to the forest that eats dragons and fail to find an adult to care for their infant. We follow Sundew as she confronts her mom and tries to tone down her anger so she doesn't give her girlfriend the ick.

The one good HiveWing, Cricket, is tasked with convincing her new friends not to do a terrorism on all the other HiveWings.

Now here is some A+ horse content. Sky is a colt in Nevada in 1860 whose life is ruined by those no-good water-polluting humans. If you love a children's book with some excellent backmatter this is the book for you.

Kizzy dreams of being an Olympic showjumper despite never having been on a horse- put her luck changes when she finds a fat pony munching on donuts at the grocery store. All she has to do is keep him fed and hidden in the big city.

Yes I also read books for adults. All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy is about a 16 year old cowboy who decides that modern 1949 American has no use for 'men' like him so he heads south.

Once again, I'm too impatient to wait for the actual year of the horse. In this episode, I'm reviewing Kimberly Brubaker Bradley's The War That Saved My Life & The War I Finally Won. These two middle-grade books are about a young disabled girl Ada, who at the start of WW2 is evacuated from London into the countryside. Away from her abusive and neglectful mom for the first time in her life she is finally able to truely live. And of course she makes best friends with a pony called Butter.

Happy Year of the Horse (almost)! Will's Race for Home by Jewell Parker Rhodes is a short children's book about a Black boy taking part in the Oklahoma Land Rush. With his father, his best-friend-Mule Belle, and their new ex-Union officer friend they will stake a claim and build a legacy for themselves.

Now listen up, here's a story. About a little guy that lives in a new world. And all day and all night and everything he sees is just- Okay the bit is just that he's Blue. Our little fella is just a peaceful little student in the police state of this brand-new dragon continent.

2,000 years ago we learn the tragic backstory of our man baby male manipulator Darkstalker.

Reading the most recent Newbery winner: Erin Entrada Kelly's The First State of Being. I am not reading this for noble reasons though- it was purely based on spite because I had an argument with my coworker about the importance of Newberries.

Time to wrap up the second arc of The Wings of Fire. Our boy Q has got to save the continent and win his love's heart (while not breaking his second love's heart) all while being bitter that he has no magic.

In this book, we catch up with the Seawing teenage leader of the Talons of Peace, Riptide. He is having trouble with the purpose of his organization now that peace has finally been achieved, and worse, the complicated emotions that come from having your girlfriend hire your absent father as a teacher at the school she's running. Oh wait.... The Talons of Power not Peace? So that's not Riptide- Tsunami's boyfriend? Oh that's one of Tsunami's 30 brothers. My bad.

There is only one person who loves Clay more than I do- and that's our girl Peril. Peril has decided the best way heal from the abuse she faced from her evil foster mother is to murder her. Joining her is Turtle who is kind of regretting letting his friends run off in the last book. Will the cycle of abuse be broken? Will they cure dragon abelism? With the first arc done we have established that prophecies are a means for facist adults to control you and that you can make your own destiny greater than any one forced upon you by a controlling adult. Anyways here is Moon, who has not one but two magic powers previously thought to not be real.

I have reached the end of the first Wings of Fire arc! What are our kiddos going to do without a prophecy to guide them. Who will get to be queen? Should they let Smolder just rule instead? And will the kill count be raised!
