    The Power of the Funny

In this episode I talk with Assistant Professor of Sociology Pamela G. Monaghan-Geernaert and Associate Professor of Communications Liz Sills about Native American political humor.  Professors Monaghan-Geernaert and Sills have an article published in the volume Political Humor Worldwide: The Cultural Context of Political Comedy, Satire, and Parody, (ed. Ofer Feldman, Springer 2024).  The title of their article is "The Power of Funny: Indigenous High Art as Quiescence and Rebellion".  Here is an excerpt from the article."In 2006 Apsáalooke artist Wendy Red Star released a print entitled The Last Thanks. Reminiscent of da Vinci’s The Last Supper, the piece features Red Star (in a traditional elk tooth dress) seated amid plastic skeletons wearing stereotypical Native headdresses at a table littered with unhealthy, prepackaged food...  The Last Thanks uses funny imagery to address this history with a message of looking toward the future with resilience while realistically confronting the horrors of the past. The creator of more recent Wolftrax episodes is Dr. Kristen Brown, assistant professor of English at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The Cop on the Corner

In this episode I interview newly minted PhD Lucas Wiscons and Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at NSU.  In this episode find out what real encounters between the police and civilians are like.  I also learn that there are such things as "ethnomethodology (the sociology of everyday life/commonsense knowledge) and conversation analysis (talk in interaction as the locus of social organization)".  If you are interested in how the police and the people they encounter view the interaction later, this is the show for you.  The creator of more recent Wolftrax episodes is Dr. Kristen Brown, assistant professor of English at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Sredni Vashtar by Saki (H. H. Munro)

Season 5 of Wolftrax got off to a late start this year.  For Halloween, I have recorded my own reading of a short story by H. H. Munro, who wrote under the pen name Saki.  His stories mostly poke light hearted fun at the English upper middle class in the decades before World War I.  This story, however, is very spooky.  It is, in my humble opinion, one of the most perfect horror stories I have ever read.  I will probably add some commentary later, but for now, enjoy Sredni Vashtar.  The creator of more recent Wolftrax episodes is Dr. Kristen Brown, assistant professor of English at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Older (and forthcoming) content consisting of faculty interviews comes from Professor Emeritus Ken Blanchard, the original creator of Wolftrax.

Elizabeth Sills on Church Clowns and other funny stuff

In this episode Professor of Communications Studies, Elizabeth Sills, comes on to discuss church clowns.  I hadn't heard of them either, but apparently they were once a pretty big thing.  Starting in the 1960's, clowns became part of the church service in many churches across the land.  For how this happened and what it might mean, tune in.  Professor Sills is also the interpreter of all things funny, so we discuss the scholarship of chuckles and each tell a few jokes of our own.  The creator of more recent Wolftrax episodes is Dr. Kristen Brown, assistant professor of English at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Peter Ramey on his new translation of Beowulf

I kick off season two of Wolftrax with Professor of English Peter Raimey.  We talk about his forthcoming translation of the great medieval poem, Beowulf.  We talk about the historical context in which the poem was written and that in which it is set.  Professor Raimey has done a masterful job of combining accuracy of detail with a text that is both readable in modern English and preserves the poetic flow of the original.  Besides, it is a rocking good story.  Three monsters!  Don't miss the dramatic reading from the text at the end of the episode.

The war in Ukraine & the history of the Early Church

In Part 1, historian Steve Usitalo and I discuss Russia and the war in Ukraine.  Why did Putin invade?  Why have the Russians, so powerful on paper, done so badly against the Ukrainian army?  What objectives must Ukraine achieve to survive as a nation?  Is any resolution of the conflict on the horizon?  In Part 2,  ancient historian Art Marmorstein and I discuss the history of the early church.  Why is the history of the Church important in a university history program?  How much do we know about the early church between Paul and the rise of the Roman church?  Was Paul's epistle to the Romans more than a solution to a marketing problem?  Why did Christianity spread so fast along Roman trade routes?  And finally, what was the status of Christmas in the early church? The creator of more recent Wolftrax episodes is Dr. Kristen Brown, assistant professor of English at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
