From Idea to Impact: Celebrating 250 Episodes of the Women Offshore Podcast
Episode 250 of the Women Offshore Podcast marks a major milestone — not just in episode count, but in the evolution of Women Offshore itself. In this special episode, Executive Director Liz Schmidt and Director of Career Development Christine MacMillan reflect on the podcast’s origins, its role in documenting the organization’s journey, and how far the maritime industry has come in addressing topics once rarely discussed. When the Women Offshore Podcast launched, it was one of the very first initiatives of the organization — a simple but powerful way to amplify women’s voices, share lived experiences offshore, and create connection across a global, often-isolated workforce. What began as a platform for storytelling quickly became an archive of leadership, career pathways, challenges, and change.Over 250 episodes, the podcast has captured milestones both big and small: firsts in leadership roles, career pivots, hard conversations about inclusion and safety, and moments of celebration and reflection. It has chronicled not only individual journeys, but the collective progress of an industry learning to listen, adapt, and grow.In this milestone episode, Liz and Christine reflect on how conversations that once felt niche — around representation, mentorship, mental health, leadership styles, and workplace culture — are now more widely embraced across maritime and offshore sectors. The podcast stands as a time capsule of that evolution, showing how far the industry has come and where it still has room to grow. They also discuss why storytelling remains central to Women Offshore’s mission. While policies, programs, and initiatives matter, it is often through shared experiences that real understanding and momentum are built.Episode 250 is both a celebration and a recommitment — to continue elevating voices, documenting progress, and creating space for honest conversation offshore. Tune in to Episode 250 to reflect on the journey, celebrate the milestones, and look ahead to what’s next for Women Offshore.

Steady Success of Christalove Agyin-Ayetse
What looks like steady successes compounding over time can feel like a long, slow climb during the process. Christalove Agyin-Ayetse is a proud Ghanaian from the Fante tribe who helped fulfill her father's dream of becoming a merchant mariner. During this interview, Christine MacMillan and Christalove discuss what life is like in Ghana, what loyalty and community mean to her, and the struggles of making her way in the industry that hasn't always been inviting. She shares her belief that technical competence can be trained, BUT behavioral competence is the values learned in the home. She thinks more emphasis should be placed on finding quality individuals with strong behavioral competence and then training them to be technically competent. She also shares a personal story about how generalizations hurt. Many Western cultures lump all African nations into a single category, and this has detrimental consequences when seeking quality mariners in the untapped reserves of the world. What Would You Do? Episode 233
In this episode of the Women Offshore Podcast, we share the anonymous story of a mariner who navigated a series of deeply uncomfortable and inappropriate interactions while on hitch. This story does not involve physical violence, but it does involve emotional manipulation, blurred boundaries, and delayed responses from leadership. These are issues that many offshore professionals have faced but rarely talk about openly. The story is real. The names and identifying details have been changed to protect the person who came forward. The message is clear: workplace safety is not just about hard hats and checklists. It is also about culture, leadership, and how we respond when something goes wrong. What We CoverA firsthand account of escalating verbal misconduct over multiple hitchesThe emotional toll of being asked to remain quietHow unclear or delayed leadership responses can prolong harmThe importance of early reporting and documentationThe internal struggle of deciding whether to speak upThe episode also explores how difficult it can be to recognize when a line has been crossed, especially when harm comes in the form of repeated comments rather than a single, obvious incident. The individual in this story tried to handle things quietly, tried to avoid conflict, and tried to trust the system. But ultimately, it became clear that silence was not a solution. Why This MattersThis story is not rare. It reflects the kind of slow, repeated harm that often goes unaddressed, not because no one cares, but because no one knows who should act.Verbal and emotional misconduct can be harder to report, and even harder to respond to. People hesitate. Leaders assume someone else is handling it. And the result is silence when action is needed.Leadership is not just a title. It is a responsibility. Delays, vague responses, or inaction can leave people feeling unsafe and unsupported. This episode is a reminder that how we respond matters. The smallest action, listening, documenting, following up, can make all the difference.

As enforcement guidance sharpens and the legal spotlight intensifies, how are organizations supposed to navigate DEI now?In this episode, we take a deeper look at what has unfolded since Executive Order 14173, titled “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity,” was signed in January 2025. While the order targeted federal agencies, its ripple effects are reshaping how private companies, nonprofits, and universities approach diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. So what exactly has changed—and what’s still allowed?Women Offshore walks through the Department of Justice’s new enforcement role, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) March 2025 guidance, and how leaders can keep building opportunity-driven workplaces while staying aligned with the law.In this episode, we cover:What the Department of Justice (DOJ) was instructed to do under Executive Order 14173What the new EEOC guidance says about hiring, training, and employee groupsWhat merit-based hiring meansHow outreach, mentorship, and leadership development can (and should) continueWhy This MattersThe maritime workforce shortage isn’t going away. If anything, it's becoming more urgent.
