Ep. 49 - Wendy Elover Shares How to Clear the Noise to Hear Yourself Again
Show Notes Summary In this episode of Your Life Over 50, Jean sits down with Joy and Clarity Strategist, TEDx speaker, and bestselling author Wendy Elover to explore what it really means to slow down, clear mental clutter, and create space for more peace and joy. Wendy shares how many of us—especially those who have spent years caregiving, managing responsibilities, and putting others first—find ourselves overwhelmed with “too many tabs open” in our minds. Through relatable stories and practical insights, she explains how clarity and joy are deeply connected: when we gain clarity about what truly matters, we naturally create room for more ease, peace, and fulfillment. Together, Jean and Wendy discuss: Why slowing down can feel scary—but necessary How mental clutter keeps us stuck in “emergency mode” The power of taking small, imperfect steps forward Letting go of “shoulds” and redefining what matters in this season of life The concept of “glimmers”—tiny moments of joy we often overlook Why accepting help is not weakness, but a gift to others Simple ways to begin, even when you don’t know where to start Wendy also introduces practical tools like her “worry and gratitude” method and encourages listeners to begin with just a few quiet moments to sort through what truly matters. This conversation is a gentle reminder that you can carry responsibility without carrying chaos—and that it’s never too late to create a life that feels lighter, calmer, and more joyful. Ep. 48 - Start With What’s in Your Pocket
Podcast Summary In this episode of Your Life Over 50, Jean sits down with Tharon Green, a visual designer for the technology publication CNET, about how he built a career in the tech world and why smartphones have become powerful creative tools. Tharon shares how his passion for technology began with video games and art school, where he studied 3D modeling and digital design. After graduation, he joined a small startup reviewing technology products and eventually found himself contributing to tech reviews, particularly audio devices like Bluetooth speakers and earbuds. That experience gave him a behind-the-scenes look at how tech companies test and review products. Today, Tharon works remotely as a visual designer for CNET, creating motion graphics, thumbnails, and visual content for their website and YouTube channel. Being part of the tech industry has continued to fuel his interest in new gadgets, especially smartphones and cameras. During the conversation, Tharon explains how smartphone cameras, especially those in newer iPhones, have become powerful tools for photography and video. While professional photographers may still benefit from dedicated digital cameras for specialized work like weddings or sports photography, hobbyists and beginners can achieve impressive results using the camera that’s already in their pocket. Tharon encourages listeners who want to start creating content, whether for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, or photography, to start with what they already have. Most modern smartphones, including iPhones and Android devices from the past few years, are capable of capturing high-quality photos and videos. For anyone feeling intimidated by technology, Tharon’s message is simple: you don’t need expensive equipment to get started. Your smartphone is already a powerful creative tool. Jean and Tharon close the conversation with plans for a future episode focused entirely on iPhone photography and tips for beginners.

Ep. 45 - From Minnesota Cabin to Peru Paradise - Laura's Adventure-Filled Life
From Minnesota Cabin to Peru Paradise - Laura's Adventure-Filled Life Guest: Laura Dias, Retreat Host & Adventure Enthusiast Ever wondered what it's like to completely change your life and follow your dreams? Our amazing guest Laura Dias did exactly that! Born and raised in Minnesota (where everyone "goes up north" to the lakes), Laura has always been what she calls "joyously map obsessed." Laura's Journey Laura's adventure story began early - she saved up money from two jobs to take her first big trip to Europe right after high school. But the real magic happened when she moved to Peru about eight years ago. What started as a business trip to find alpaca products turned into something incredible when she met Carlos, a local guide who was only making $100 for leading 17-day jungle treks to Machu Picchu! Seeing how unfairly he was being paid, Laura suggested they start their own company. And that's exactly what they did! Retreats and Tours Peru was born, offering transformational retreats in the Sacred Valley near Cusco. What Makes These Retreats Special Laura's retreats aren't your typical tourist trips. They focus on the ancient energy of Cusco and the Sacred Valley, taking guests to less crowded places where they can really connect with: Amazing Incan history and stories The beautiful Quechua indigenous culture Stunning archaeological sites The transformational power of stepping outside your comfort zone The retreat season runs from April through November (avoiding the rainy season), and they currently host about 4 retreats per year with room to grow up to 32! Life-Changing Advice for Midlife Women Here's where Laura really shines - her philosophy on adding adventure to your life is pure gold: Start Small: You don't need to climb Mount Everest! Adventure can be as simple as: Putting cinnamon in your tea instead of honey Taking a walk down a path you've never explored Trying a new restaurant in your town Eating dinner at 6pm instead of 7pm Break the Routine: Laura explains that routines can hold us captive. When you do the same things every day, years can fly by without you even noticing. But you remember every trip you took and every adventure you had! Change Your Mindset: Instead of seeing challenges as problems, try viewing them as adventures. As Laura says, "Adventure is fun. A problem can be difficult. But if you can train your brain to see things as adventure... it's a much better way." The Science of Happiness Laura shares this brilliant insight: The word "happiness" comes from the same root as "happenings." You need things happening in your life to be truly happy! Plus, when you step out of your routine, your brain produces endorphins that make you feel better. She also reminds us that: Depression comes from thinking too much about the past Anxiety comes from thinking too much about the future Happiness lives in the present moment Perfect Timing for Empty Nesters For women whose kids have grown up, Laura has encouraging words: "You have more choice than you've ever had in your life!" While being a parent required routines and structure, now you can literally do whatever you want. The key is taking small steps to rediscover what that might be. Connect with Laura Ready to add some adventure to your life? Laura has a Facebook group called "Ignite Your Life" where she posts daily "sparks" - little adventure ideas to get you started. Look for the badge-shaped logo with a little road! Want to visit Peru? Email: [email protected] Facebook: Ignite Your Life group LinkedIn: Retreats & Tours Peru Laura's story proves that it's never too late to completely change your life and follow your dreams. Whether you're ready for a transformational retreat in Peru or just want to start with small daily adventures, the most important thing is to take that first step outside your routine. As Laura says, "Adventure calls you" - you just have to be brave enough to answer!

Ep. 42 - Living Life Before Retirement
Tony Hilton is a nurse practitioner who works for the Veterans Health Administration in Washington, DC, while living in Southern California. She's in charge of a safety program that protects both staff and patients across 175 healthcare systems serving 9 million veterans and about 375,000 care providers. Tony focuses on patient mobility and safety. She explains that healthcare workers have high injury rates, even higher than construction workers! Her job is to keep both staff and patients safe by making sure patients can move around safely. She believes nobody should stay in bed if they can get up and move around, to avoid health problems from not moving enough. When veterans come to VA facilities, Tony and her team set up mobility goals for them. They assess what patients can do, and if they can't stand on their own, they provide special harnesses to help them walk without falling. Her team follows patients not just in hospitals but also in clinics, homes, and communities. Tony explains that when patients feel depressed about their mobility issues, her team focuses on what's meaningful to the individual and works with them to develop goals. She created a chart system that tracks patients' progress over time with a house, sun, and trees at the top representing the goal of returning home. This visual helps patients, families, and staff see progress even during ups and downs. Besides her healthcare work, Tony travels internationally for speaking engagements and pleasure. She especially enjoys visiting places connected to Bible stories, like Israel and Egypt. She's planning to retire on a cruise ship in a few years, saying it's "cheaper than a nursing home" and lets her travel while keeping her brain active. Tony's advice for women over 50 is to focus on emotional and mental wellness first, as this drives physical health. She encourages staying active and connected, not giving up, and embracing purpose. She got her doctorate in public health after age 50 and believes you're "as young as you wish to be."

Ep. 41 - Running Through Life From Dietitian to Life Coach
In this episode of Your Life Over 50, Jean interviews Caryn, a vibrant 51-year-old life coach from Omaha, Nebraska. Caryn used to be a dietitian and endurance coach, but now she helps women, especially those between 45 and 55, learn how to love themselves and prioritize their own health and happiness. She talks about how many women spend years caring for everyone else and often forget to take care of themselves. Caryn encourages women to start each day by checking in with their own feelings and needs—even just placing a hand over their heart and asking, “What do I want today?” She believes that small changes, like this morning habit, can help women reconnect with who they are. Caryn shares her personal journey, including going through a divorce about ten years ago, and how that hard time led her to start focusing on self-love and personal growth. She also talks about the guilt many women feel when doing something for themselves and how she had to work through that feeling over time. She explains how her career started in hospitals helping people eat better after serious health scares. Over time, though, she realized she wanted to help people before they got sick. That’s what led her to mindset coaching, because she saw that emotions and beliefs often affect our health choices more than just food plans. Caryn also shares her passion for running. She’s completed marathons, half-marathons, and even an Ironman triathlon! She loves helping other women train for races and build healthy habits. For her, running isn’t about speed—it’s about feeling strong and being in nature. At the end of the conversation, Caryn encourages women over 50 to dream big, take care of their bodies, and believe that they can still do amazing things. She says it’s never too late to start something new and become who you want to be. You can find Caryn on Facebook under her name, or on Instagram at @carynfemininefrequency. Ep. 34 - Skateboarding Grammy: Aging on Your Own Terms
SUMMARY This episode of "Your Life Over 50" introduces us to Sebrena Lindsay. Her story beautifully illustrates how life's different chapters can bring unexpected joy and wisdom. Let me walk you through the key elements of her story and what makes it so compelling. First, let's look at Sebrena's journey into motherhood. She started as a teenage mom at 19, living abroad with her military husband. What's particularly interesting is how she approached this early challenge - instead of trying to figure everything out alone, she embraced the wisdom of her "village," learning from her mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. This foundation of accepting guidance and support would later shape her own approach to life's challenges. Her parenting experience is fascinating because she had what she calls "two only children" - sons born 12 years apart. Think about how different the world was between her first and second child. This experience taught her something crucial: every child is unique, and what works for one might not work for another. It's a lesson that would prove valuable in her next role. Now, here's where her story takes an unexpected turn. When Sebrena became a grandmother, she didn't settle into a traditional grandmother role. Instead, she learned to rollerblade, skateboard, and mountain bike in her late 50s to keep up with her grandson, Kaizen. This isn't just about physical activities - it represents a profound philosophy about aging that challenges common perspectives. Speaking of aging, Sebrena introduces a powerful concept: she's not "anti-aging" but "pro-aging." Think about that distinction for a moment. Instead of fighting against the natural process of getting older, she sees aging as a privilege that not everyone gets to experience. This perspective shifts the entire conversation from one of resistance to one of appreciation. Her approach to wellness is particularly enlightening because it's holistic. She uses what I'd call the "oxygen mask principle" - just like on airplanes where you're instructed to put your own mask on first before helping others, Sabrina emphasizes the importance of self-care. But here's the key: she's not talking about surface-level care. She combines physical health (through strength training and proper nutrition), emotional well-being, and spiritual growth through her faith. What makes her message especially relevant is how she addresses modern challenges. She acknowledges that our parents' generation might have aged differently because of simpler lifestyles, less processed foods, and more natural movement in their daily routines. Yet rather than just pointing this out, she offers practical ways to incorporate these benefits into our modern lives. The conversation ends with a particularly timely message about community and resilience. Sebrena advises her listeners to stay connected with their community, especially during challenging times. She uses a memorable metaphor for handling uncertain times: "Pop some popcorn, sit back and watch." This isn't about being passive, but rather about maintaining peace and perspective through faith and community support. Throughout the episode, Sebrena weaves together practical advice with deeper wisdom. She helps us understand that aging well isn't just about maintaining physical health or appearance - it's about embracing each stage of life with grace, staying active and engaged, and maintaining strong connections with both family and community.
