from Crooked Path Radio · host Daphna
Before the internet, how did Witches and Pagans find each other? In this episode of Crooked Path Radio, Daphna and Spyke follow that question through the pages of the underground pagan press. From pen-pal listings and correspondence to book reviews, mail-order catalogs, and contact sections, magazines and newsletters did more than circulate information; they helped likeminded people discover books, ideas, communities, and one another. Drawing on periodicals preserved and documented through WAPPA (Witchcraft and Pagan Periodicals Archive project) alongside Spyke’s firsthand memories of the pre-internet Pagan underground, the conversation explores what these publications can tell us about how communities formed across distance, and why preserving them matters today. Plus: how WAPPA is bringing the old tradition of Pagan pen pals into the present. “It was a safe space, but it was also a lifeline.” Spyke “Just because we have more connectivity doesn’t mean we’re necessarily feeling more connected.” Daphna Crooked Path Radio is a podcast from the Witchcraft & Pagan Periodical Archive (WAPPA), exploring the people, publications, and networks of the lost Pagan underground.
