𝐄𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: School consolidation is one of the most difficult conversations a rural community can face. It impacts far more than budgets and buildings—it touches traditions, identities, and generations of community pride. In this episode of The Rural Scoop, Dr. Melissa Sadorf sits down with Derek Cantrell, Principal of Allegany High School and Virginia's Principal of the Year, to discuss how he successfully led the merger of two long-standing rival high schools into one thriving school community. Derek shares the leadership strategies that transformed fear into hope, from honoring traditions and overcommunicating with stakeholders to intentionally building a new school culture around the philosophy of "Better Together." He explains why relationships matter more than logistics, how listening builds trust, and why successful change starts long before the first day of school. Whether your district is considering consolidation or simply navigating significant change, this conversation offers practical lessons on leading with empathy, transparency, and a relentless focus on students. By honoring the past while creating a shared vision for the future, he helped transform two rival schools into one united community focused on student success. His leadership reminds us that lasting change happens when leaders communicate openly, value every voice, celebrate small victories, and never lose sight of the people behind every decision. For rural leaders navigating uncertainty, Derek's "Better Together" philosophy offers a powerful roadmap for leading change with courage and heart.
