001 - Introduction
from On Building a Theatre · host Irving Pichel
In our daily lives, we often overlook the inconveniences of our surroundings, whether in homes, stores, or public buildings. Initial complaints may fade, and over time, even the most unattractive features can take on a certain charm, shaping our experiences and traditions. Today, a nationwide initiative is underway to establish community houses as war memorials, equipped with spaces that cater to social and recreational needs, many featuring stages and auditoriums. Simultaneously, new school buildings are being designed with dramatic stages in mind. However, without a deeper understanding of producers’ needs, architects risk creating auditoriums that fall short of expectations, just like many existing facilities. This paper aims to illuminate common design pitfalls and outline the essential features necessary for creating truly functional and inspiring performance spaces.
