001 - Preface and Introduction

After the Dissolution of the Monasteries during Henry VIIIs reign, Torre Abbey fell into significant disrepair, especially in its church area. Yet, in the 17th century, the remnants were transformed into a stunning private residence owned by Colonel Lucius Cary in the early 20th century. With the Colonels blessing, local resident Hugh Watkin undertook groundbreaking excavations of the abbeys ruins from 1906 to 1911, uncovering remarkable insights that had long been buried. This book showcases Watkins findings and conclusions, marking the final edition published in July 1912. Since then, extensive archaeological work has revealed even more about the abbeys rich history. Acquired by the local council in 1930, Torre Abbey now operates as an art gallery and museum, where its beautiful house, ruins, and gardens invite visitors year-round for various events, including weddings and exhibitions. It proudly stands as a Grade 1 listed building. This episode includes AI-generated content.
