001 - To his Mother-in-law

While residing in Berwick, Knox developed a close relationship with Mrs. Bowes, and a deep bond blossomed with her daughter, Marjory, with the mother’s enthusiastic approval for their union. However, this match faced fierce opposition from Marjorys relatives, particularly Sir Thomas Bowes, a notable diplomat who believed that an alliance with an obscure Scot would tarnish the family’s reputation. Knox’s responses to this unkind treatment were marked by a blend of dignity, self-respect, and Christian humility. Though their marriage was delayed, he continued to affectionately address Mrs. Bowes as mother in his letters.
