0011: the princess at the window.

from looking into people's windows - a sound collage by nate schmold

I dug this one out from beneath the floorboards of a musty old shack i forgot about since 2013. I wrote it as background score for a short video game I wanted to make before i even knew how to make video games. The game was based on a short story i writing about a princess who was trapped in a tower ala Rapunzel. In the game, you would click on various things including her diary to learn that she was desperately waiting for a prince to arrive some day and save her from her plight, and she would occasionally go to the small box containing her pet, and speak with it to tell it about her dreams of one day being free and meeting her love. The whole thing was fairytale-esque but with this strange darkness bubbling underneath, as you uncovered more clues and searched the corners of her room, youd learn more about the princess and that maybe she wasn't so innocent after all. Clumps of hair were squirrelled away in the deepest pages of a book, meat in a jar, bones under her bed, that sort of thing. The finale would come when someone appeared at the window, a 'hero' you think is there to save her, but they proceed to... er... well... dispose of the princess... by beheading her. The box with her pet was opened and inside was a human skull, still wet with blood. The 'hero' breaks down, sobbing about being 'too late' and weeping for their lost love "Eloise". I never really finished writing it. --- looking into people’s windows is an abstract audio podcast devoted to exploring small stories and vignettes told through sound. Imagine strolling through a busy neighbourhood at night. Mysterious lives spill out from windows as muted light filters through rippling curtains. TV screens flicker and project misshapen shadows across unfamiliar walls. Celebrations and obligations keep focus sharp behind the glass as indiscernible silhouettes dance to a silent rhythm. These sound fragments attempt to capture the memories of these moments before they are lost to the next day’s hustle.Created with Renoise
