0016 - The Metaphysics of Games Part 2

from Design Talk (dot IE)

Welcome to this extended seminar with Donncha Kavanagh on the history and Metaphysics of Games, Play & Fun.In the next couple of episodes Donncha will talk about the background, key ideas, concepts and theories surrounding the role of games and play in human society. In part 2 Donncha juxtaposes the split between work and play as distinct domains of human character (good and bad; valued versus vulgar); and the modern era’s increasingly unashamed appreciation for leisure. Modernity; contemporary and post-modern treatment of games and play. From theorising games and play as the genesis of human culture – homo ludens – through to the contemporary move to employ the mechanics of games and play in purely utilitarian applications, the psycho-physiological application of games and play experience for behavioural control, profit and production.Thank you for listening to Design Talk. The music used is Tired Traveler On The Way Home by Andrew Codeman……and Jimmy’s Jam from Ampletunes. For licence and other information see the show notes.AcknowledgementsMusic 1) Title: Tired traveler on the way to homeArtist: Andrew CodemanLicence: Creative Commons - Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)Source: https://bit.ly/2yTIHv4 (AndrewCodeman_TiredTravelerOnTheWayHome_2018.mp3)2) Title: Jimmy's JamArtist: AmpletunesSource: https://ampletunes.com/downloads (Soul | Funk)License: Ampletunes Free License; "Ampletunes was created to provide you with royalty free music absolutely free of charge"  Cover Art Title: Blue Sky ThinkingArtist: Allen HigginsSource: A collage: photo of Donncha Kavanagh used with permission; “Cloud with ladders” used under Fair Use, non-commercial: stock image clip art from Microsoft PowerPoint "New" 23 Dec 15:15 2021); font used “Silom”.License: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 Podcast LicenseDesign Talk (dot IE) is released under the “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike version 4.0 creative commons license aka CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 Hosted on Acast. AI Erik's Podcast Audio Erik Conn The AI News Podcast where we talk AI. NEWMORROW SESSIONS - A PodCast Series on the Future of Hospitality Mario C. Bauer, Florian Schneider, Axel Weber & Dr. Tillman Bardt The Newmorrow PodCast is more than a podcast — it's a platform for open dialog on the future of our business, a platform for those building what doesn’t exist yet. Here, we share and embrace our passion for the hospitality industry, but we won’t romanticize the journey. We ask the tough questions, confront uncomfortable truths, and prepare for a future that resists easy answers. We believe that the tougher and wilder times become, the more openly, honestly and humanely people need to talk to each other and act together. We believe, openness, togetherness, and truthfulness should also be cornerstones of a professional community to develop our utopian idea of „open source“. This is a space where visionaries don’t just imagine the future — they wrestle with the paradoxes that shape it: success vs. happiness, data vs. instinct, stability vs. reinvention. Join leaders, entrepreneurs, and thinkers as they share not what made them — but what’s actively shaping them, now and next.
