002 - Chapter 02
from Age of Innocence Hosted by Edith Wharton
Step into a world where electric lights, telephones, and motor vehicles are mere figments of the future. In this tightly-knit circle of aristocratic families, rooted in old revolutionary stock, New Yorks social life revolves around reputation and outward appearances, often at the expense of genuine connection. As America experiences rapid expansion and industrialization, the time-honored values of the old elite begin to clash with the ambitions of newly wealthy robber barons. At the heart of this Gilded Age, Newland Archer—a young lawyer—and May Welland—a debutante—find themselves bound by the expectations of their families and society. Their engagement is thrown into turmoil with the return of Mays enigmatic cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, whose unconventional lifestyle and mysterious past threaten to disrupt their carefully curated lives. Initially critical of Ellens disregard for social norms, Newland soon finds himself drawn to her warmth and vivacity. Will he remain shackled to the life hes always known, or will he dare to pursue true happiness at the risk of societal scandal? (Summary by Brenda Dayne) This episode includes AI-generated content.
