在武丁登场之前，殷商王朝有一个巨大的烂摊子，叫九世之乱。什么叫九世之乱？简单说，就是叔叔杀侄子、哥哥杀弟弟，王位像击鼓传花一样在王室内部转来转去，整整乱了九代人。商代自成汤建国，到帝辛亡国，一共传了十七代人、三十位商王。其中有十四位商王是通过“兄终弟及”的方式即位的，而这十四位里面，有九代是兄弟之间连续传承的。这九代人，就是“九世之乱”的主角。
