大学では、第2外国語として中国語を選びましたが、全く物になりませんでした。 ただしそれから数年後、日本語学校にて彼ら同士の会話を聞き始めて半年以上が経った頃から 明らかに話している言葉のセンテンス、文節が勝手にわかり始めたのです。 日本語教師としての研修も受けていて彼らの言葉は学びなおしませんでしたが 不思議な体験でした。
