Beveridge Award for the best book in English on the history of the United States, Latin America, or Canada from 1492 to the present from from the American Historical Association, the John C. Ewers Award for best book in North American Indian Ethnohistory from the Western History Association, the Best Subsequent Book in Native American and Indigenous Studies from the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association, and was a Finalist for the John Hope Franklin Award for Most Outstanding Book in American Studies from the American Studies Association.   David A. Chang is a Distinguished McKnight Professor of History and American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota.
