from Coffee Talk: From the Ground Up · host Engineering Consulting Services

In this episode of Coffee Talk, we’re getting to know Liz Newcomb, PE, Branch Manager of the Louisville, KY office. She shares about her art projects including jewelry making and how her creativity helps her connect with students interested in STEAM careers. Liz also shares her career journey starting as an engineering student and a field technician to leadership roles. Resources and Programs mentioned: Inspiring Girls USA National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Some of Liz’s key takeaways on mentoring students: You can be a resource to students no matter your experience, sometimes young students simply need an adult to ask questions to, from what classes to take, to what the general college experience is and what are potential career paths. Everyone speaks “art” – it is easy to connect with people on a visual level from stick figures to doodles. It helps students communicate ideas they may not have words for and gives an opportunity for immediate feedback and discussion. If you are interested in mentoring or connecting with students, a great starting place is the local universities/colleges.
