He has both deep practical experience with Islamic magical techniques, and deep scholarly experience. He holds both a Ph. D. as well as an M. A. in Islamic Studies from Princeton University. He also obtained an M. A. in Arabic Language and Literature from Indiana University among many other educational endeavors, including, teaching for eight years at the American University in Cairo.
