The Apology of the Augsburg Confession, crafted by Philip Melanchthon during and after the pivotal 1530 Diet of Augsburg, serves as a robust defense against the Pontifical Confutation—an official Roman Catholic response commissioned by Charles V to counter the Lutheran Augsburg Confession of June 25, 1530.
