Episode 017 Back to school (college chapel), YWAM, agnostics, "the lost," and why mission work can be harmfulThis week we went to a conservative evangelical Christian college for one of their chapel services. We attend with our friend Payton who joins us on the podcast. We talk about the atmosphere for faith at these institutions and Payton "comes out" as an agnostic. We speak to why that doesn't mean Payton is "lost" and why Christians even use that term anymore. The speaker at this chapel was from a missions organization called Youth With A Mission, or YWAM. We discuss YWAM, their high pressure sales tactics used to recruit, their creepy ways of doing training for the young people, as well as some of the good humanitarian work they do with evangelistic zeal. We talk about the whole phenomenon of American "missions," it's colonial mindset, and what drives us to "missionize" other cultures. We hash out why mission trips can be so harmful to the people that we really intended to help.
