He is also: Emeritus Professor of Environmental Technology and Founding Director of the Centre for Environmental Strategy, University of Surrey Past Executive Director and President of the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE) Visiting Professor in Environmental System Analysis, Chalmers University, Gothenburg, Sweden Adjunct Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada Visiting Professor in Centre for Industrial Ecology, University of Coimbra, Portugal Professor Roland Clift was one of the first to define and examine “clean tech” as a sector within the built environment. In addition to being an academic and educator, Professor Roland Clift has advised industry and governments using a systems approach to analyze sustainability issues and importantly, has also considered the implied ethical issues. From 1996 to 2005, Roland was a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (RCEP). He is a past member of the UK Eco-labelling Board, of the Science Advisory Council of the Department, Food and Rural affairs (Defra), of the Royal Society/Royal Academy Working Group on nanotechnology and of the Working Group which drafted and updated the BSI/Defra/Carbon Trust standard on carbon labelling, PAS 2050. In 2004-5, he acted as Expert Adviser to a House of Lords Select Committee enquiry into energy efficiency. His research is concerned with system approaches to environmental management and industrial ecology, including life cycle assessment and energy systems.
