NOTE: Because of the nature of this project, there was a bending of usual LibriVox procedures: pub-like background noise was encouraged, as well as group readings; and no editing was required, so in places there may be some accidental variation from the original text ... Listener be warned! Here is some more information about the genesis of the LibriVox Ulysses project. (Summary by Hugh McGuire) Still one of the most radical novels of the 20th Century, James Joyce's Ulysses is considered to have ushered in the era of the modern novel. Loosely based on Homer's Odyssey, the book follows Leopold Bloom and a number of other characters through an ordinary day, twenty four hours, in Dublin, on June 16, 1904. The text is dense and difficult, but perfectly suited to an oral reading, filled with language tricks, puns and jokes, stream of consciousness, and bawdiness. Frank Delaney's Re: Joyce Frank Delaney ReJOYCE! To commemorate James Joyce's mighty novel, Ulysses, we're launching a podcast. Every week you'll find a five-minute mini-essay from me designed to take you through the novel that's on every list of the greatest books ever written. And as Ulysses runs to some 375,000 words, and I mean to go through it sentence by sentence if I have to, in order to convey the full brilliance of this novel - and the enjoyment to be had from it - I'll be podcasting for some time to come! It's such an absorbing book, it's got diamond mines of references, it's so compassionate, so tender, so moving, so funny - and most of us never know that, because most of us have long been daunted by it. No need to be afraid any more - that is, if you make a habit of listening to these podcasts. War Yankee - Overland Kyle M. Bondo It's May 1864, and the Union enters its fourth year of war against the Confederacy succession. Ulysses S. Grant -- Hero of Vicksburg -- has been promoted to General-in-Chief of the Union Army by President Lincoln in a last-ditch effort to win the war. Grant, placing his command in the field with the Army of the Potomac, will now execute his own aggressive strategy against the rebels on all fronts. But first, he must spend the next 47 days fighting across the enemy-held Commonwealth of Virginia. Join amateur historian and US Navy veteran Kyle M. Bondo, as he follows the history of Grant's Overland Campaign from Washington, DC, to Petersburg, Virginia, in War Yankee, an American Civil War history podcast presented by Oncetold. Ulysses - James Joyce RTÉ Radio 1 James Joyce's 'Ulysses' is one of the most important works of modernist literature. The book chronicles the passage of Leopold Bloom through Dublin during an ordinary day, 16 June 1904 (the day of Joyce's first date with his future wife, Nora Barnacle). In 1982 RTÉ Radio celebrated the centenary of Joyce's birth with a dramatised full production of 'Ulysses'; this broadcast is now considered one of the definitive adaptations of the book. See RTE.ie/ulysses for more. Ulysses by James Joyce Lina James Joyce’s *Ulysses* follows Leopold Bloom as he moves through Dublin during a single day—June 16, 1904. His ordinary activities, encounters, memories, and private thoughts gradually form an extraordinary portrait of human consciousness. Running alongside Bloom’s journey is the story of Stephen Dedalus, a young writer searching for direction, independence, and a sense of belonging. Their paths eventually meet, creating one of modern literature’s most memorable relationships. Inspired by Homer’s *Odyssey*, the novel transforms Dublin into a modern landscape of wandering, temptation, loss, and homecoming. Joyce experiments with language, perspective, humor, symbolism, and stream-of-consciousness narration, allowing listeners to experience the characters’ thoughts as they unfold. This unabridged audiobook brings greater rhythm and clarity to a famously challenging work. Through its changing voices, emotional contrasts, and vivid urban atmosphere, *Ulysses* becomes not only a
